Alpine Academy director Julian Rouse was named as Permane's interim replacement while Matt Harman leads the technical team at Enstone. Romp in the rain as American Harman wins Open

It's just always bugged me but I was really proud of the way that I struck the ball today. Few of the thousands huddled under a sea of umbrellas would have tipped world number 26 Harman to win before the tournament. Likewise, Young, Rahm, Day and England's Tommy Fleetwood were all unable to hole the putts that would have at least asked some questions of Harman's nerve. But not even a Merseyside monsoon could rain on Harman's parade as he enjoyed a victory march down the last. Shubhankar Sharma tied for eighth place to post the best finish by an Indian at the British Open -- one of only 22 players to finish an attritional Open under par.

"So pleased with the way I hung in there the last couple days," Harman told reporters. "Got off to a bad start both days and turned it around, so really happy with that." Starting his third round shortly after Rahm had completed a course-record 63, Harman dropped two shots in his first four holes. "It would have been really easy to let the wheels start spinning and really kind of let it get out of control," he said. Harman said he had always believed he could win a major but was worried he might have missed his chance.

United States' Brian Harman celebrates on the 18th green after winning the British Open Golf Championships at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England, Sunday, July 23, 2023. Brian Harman turned back every challenge in the British Open, from big names to bad weather, and took his place among major champions Sunday with a victory that was never seriously in doubt at Royal Liverpool. He closed with a 1-under 70, making an 8-foot par putt on the last hole for a six-shot victory. Harman took the lead on Friday morning with the second of four straight birdies early in the second round. Harman drained a 15-foot birdie putt on the par-3 sixth, a 25-foot birdie putt on the next hole and he was on his way.

Harman, seeking his first major title, dropped two shots in the first four holes before birdies at the fifth, ninth, 12th and 13th took him to 12 under par, five ahead of American Cameron Young and six clear of Rahm. The 36-year-old Harman, world number 26, showed great courage and composure after his shaky start, particularly as it happened just after Rahm had completed his round to ramp up the pressure. "The start was tough, I hit a couple of loose shots," Harman told a news conference. World number three Rahm conjured up eight birdies in a majestic display of ball-striking to give himself a chance to win his third major crown and second of the year. "That's the best round I've played on a links golf course ever," Rahm told reporters.

He will pair with Harman when they tee off in as the final group Sunday at 2:15 p.m. BST (9:15 a.m. His eight-under 63 was the lowest round of the tournament so far and marked his career-low score at a major. Broadcom sent Harman a letter in May saying that all chips Broadcom supplied to Harman must be used exclusively for BMW components. The lawsuit accused Broadcom of approaching two Harman customers BMW and GM, "likely deliberately squeezing supply to win concessions from both." Broadcom and BMW then formed an exclusive chip partnership, which cut out Harman from the supply chain, according to the suit. After discussions with Broadcom, Harman wrote to Broadcom saying that it did not agree to this. Broadcom and BMW also entered an agreement where Broadcom would sell chips to BMW directly while only allowing Harman to have chips incorporated into BMW products.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey on Wednesday tempered the expectation that his expression of support this week for Sweden joining NATO meant that he would swiftly push the approval through the Turkish parliament. In his first public comments on the issue since NATO announced his support for the proposal on Monday, Mr. Erdogan said that the final decision rested with the parliament and that Sweden needed to take more steps to win parliamentary support, without giving specifics. He also said parliament would not take up the matter until October, even though it is in session until July 27. Mr. Erdogan also said that Sweden needed to continue working to address Turkey’s security concerns, suggesting that he was not yet ready to give up his leverage. “The parliament is not in session for the next two months,” Mr. Erdogan told reporters in Vilnius, Lithuania, near the end of the annual NATO summit.

She had also survived a smaller earthquake in the southeastern province of Elazig in 2020, she said, and expected Mr. Erdogan to help now as he had helped then. “Otherwise, the people wouldn’t have voted for him.”Interviews with quake survivors indicated many reasons that the disaster had not changed their political outlook. Some whose homes were destroyed said they had more faith in Mr. Erdogan to rebuild the affected areas than they had in his challenger, the opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu. There are empty lots where buildings that collapsed once stood and blue and white tents sheltering quake survivors are scattered around town. Instead of voting based on the government’s quake response, residents said they focused on other issues.
The candidate who came in third in Turkey’s presidential election last week announced on Monday that he was endorsing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the runoff vote on Sunday, granting Mr. Erdogan an additional boost against his remaining challenger. Mr. Erdogan, the dominant figure in Turkish politics for 20 years, appears to have an edge in the runoff, whose victor will shape Turkey’s domestic and foreign policies for the next five years. Throughout the campaign, Mr. Erdogan aimed to link himself in voters’ minds with the image of a strong Turkey, with expanding military might and geopolitical clout. Although most polls in the run-up to the initial vote on May 14 showed Mr. Erdogan trailing his main challenger, the opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the president overcame voter anger at high inflation and frustration with the government’s initially slow response to catastrophic earthquakes in February to win 49.5 percent of the vote. Mr. Kilicdaroglu, the joint candidate of a coalition of six opposition parties that came together to try to unseat Mr. Erdogan, won 44.9 percent.
Ukraine and Russia agreed Wednesday to a two-month extension of a wartime deal that allows Ukraine to ship its grain across the Black Sea, a rare example of cooperation between the two countries. Under the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which began last July, Ukraine, a major exporter of wheat, corn and sunflower oil, can transport grain and other food products along a corridor past Russian naval vessels that have blockaded Ukraine’s ports since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion 15 months ago. The shipments are subject to inspection off the coast of Istanbul, while empty cargo ships headed to Ukraine’s ports are also checked, in part to ensure they are not carrying weapons. Grain exports are important for Ukraine’s economy and their resumption also helps maintain the stability of global food prices, which rose sharply during the first months of war, as grain intended for export piled up in Ukrainian ports and warehouses. The resulting shortages and price increases raised the threat of famine in parts of the Middle East and Africa.
Turkey’s nail-biter election on Sunday made clear that the people’s faith in the country’s electoral system remains strong and that the incumbent, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is still a formidable political force, despite his failure to secure a first-round victory. A runoff is likely to be held on May 28 after preliminary results showed Mr. Erdogan with 49.4 percent of votes and his main challenger, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, with 45 percent, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency. Mr. Erdogan, who has led Turkey for 20 years, appeared to be in a strong position to emerge with another five-year term. Before the vote, most polls suggested a slight lead for Mr. Kilicdaroglu, the joint candidate of a newly formed alliance of six opposition parties. But the preliminary results showed the enduring appeal and influence of Mr. Erdogan.
