OpenAI is now worth $157 billion, but it can't rest easy yet. Now comes the hard part: emerging victorious in a fiercely competitive AI industry. Though Sam Altman's company cemented its status as a frontrunner in the generative AI boom this week, securing a new $157 billion valuation after raising $6.6 billion of fresh capital from marquee investors, its leading position is hardly guaranteed. Sure, Altman's company now casts a massive shadow over the industry with its fresh $157 billion valuation. AI companies have been spending huge sums to purchase chips from Jensen Huang's Nvidia.

There are two competing visions for the future of the AI business, according to Marc Andreessen. Instead, it's one of the most fundamental (and arguably surreal) questions facing the AI industry today, according to legendary investor Marc Andreessen. In the first vision, AI startups are in a winner-takes-all race. These AI models, such as Meta's Llama offerings, are freely available for almost anyone to use, while OpenAI sells access to propriety, closed models. But if downloadable, open-source models pull all prices down to the "cost of production," then Andreessen's first vision — of "infinite profits" — starts to appear a little less likely.

No, the tech that’s going to save humanity will be powered by the tech that very nearly destroyed it. The tech industry’s solution, for now, is nuclear energy, which is more stable than wind or solar and is virtually carbon-emission-free. Amazon is working on putting a data center campus right on the site of a Talen Energy nuclear power plant in Northeast Pennsylvania. And while AI doomer predictions often get brushed off as alarmist forecasts, you can’t as readily dismiss the folks who are concerned about nuclear energy. Bottom line: There’s no AI future without a serious uptick in our power supply, which makes the expansion of nuclear power practically unavoidable.

Open AI CEO Sam Altman said he doesn't see AI replacing human writers. AI's use in writing has grown since ChatGPT's launch, with some authors even using AI to write and illustrate books. AdvertisementWhile multiple jobs are seemingly at risk of one day being replaced by AI, Sam Altman doesn't believe writers are one of them. One freelance writer previously told BI that they lost a job after their client began using AI to replace his services. But Altman remains confident that human writers will maintain an advantage over AI — original idea generation.

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, expects about $5 billion in losses on $3.7 billion in revenue this year, CNBC has confirmed. The New York Times was first to report on OpenAI's financials earlier on Friday after viewing company documents. OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft, is currently pursuing a funding round that would value the company at more than $150 billion, people familiar with the matter have told CNBC. Thrive Capital is leading the round and plans to invest $1 billion, with Tiger Global planning to join as well. The company will retain its nonprofit segment as a separate entity, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC.

In recent months, some customers and investors have begun to question the value of generative AI technology, including Microsoft's Copilot AI assistant tool. Investment startup Intelligent Alpha is working on launching the Intelligent Omaha ETF , with the ticker AIWB, that relies on AI to emulate the Berkshire Hathaway CEO's investment philosophy and create a portfolio of 25-30 stocks that it thinks Buffett might buy. It remains to be seen how deeply AI could understand Buffett's unique investing style that has evolved significantly over seven decades. All about AI Intelligent Alpha has been testing its Buffett strategy for six months and the portfolio AI puts together would overlap Berkshire's by anywhere between 30 to 60%. "The vision for Intelligent Alpha is to build the AI-powered BlackRock," Clinton said. Artificial intelligence is expected to transform the way companies do business, including those in financial planning and investment management. That means financial advisors need to get onboard or risk being left behind. Of course, financial advisors have been using some technology, like financial planning software, for years. As one VC partner told Business Insider at the time: "Sam is bigger than Taylor Swift." But the bigger you are, the faster the fall, and a few months later, things began to unravel. Others simply said Altman was overhyped, that he didn't have all the answers that the public and investors seemed to expect of him.
