DNA analysis sheds light on how Neanderthals disappeared
  + stars: | 2024-07-31 | by ( Katie Hunt | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
The analysis, published July 12 in the journal Science, showed that the two groups exchanged DNA at multiple points over the past 250,000 years, shedding light on how Neanderthals disappeared and potentially rewriting the story of how and when our Homo sapiens ancestors left Africa. Genetic detective workDuring the two earlier waves of interbreeding, the Neanderthal population absorbed human genes and the offspring stayed within Neanderthal groups, according to the new study. Russian archeologists digging inside Denisova cave located in the the Altai mountains that's been home to Neanderthals, early modern humans and the Denisovans. A skull found in Qafzeh Israel is believed to have belonged to an early modern human. The researchers’ analysis suggests that the Neanderthal population size at the time was 20% smaller than previously thought.

Railway workers in France rushed to wrap up delicate repair work on Saturday, a day after arsonists sabotaged three high-speed train lines and caused disruptions that have eased up but are expected to last through the weekend. The sabotage upended travel plans for over a million end-of-week passengers and caused chaos just hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris Summer Olympics on Friday. The ceremony itself unfurled across the Seine River without any major issue other than pouring rain, allowing French security officials to breath a sigh of relief. “WE DID IT!” Gérald Darmanin, France’s interior minister, exulted on X, adding that “after four years of intense work to prepare for the world’s biggest sport event, we have never been prouder of our security forces.”

CNN —France is still facing travel disruption a day after saboteurs targeted high-speed railway lines in an attack coinciding with the start of the Olympics. They recovered an “amount of evidence” following the operation, Darmanin told CNN affiliate France 2. Authorities should not rule out industrial espionage, Persson told CNN on Friday, saying that a railway staffer, or someone who built the tracks including construction workers, could also be to blame. Railway staff and police work to repair one of several sites where vandals targeted France's high-speed train network, in the northern villege of Croisilles, on Friday. Jain's hypothetical seemed prescient when a quality control issue from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike caused a worldwide IT outage that halted flights and freight, shuttered retail outlets, and caused hospitals to resort to charting on paper. "Insurers have been worried about something like what happened with CrowdStrike since cloud adoption happened," said Dale Gonzales, chief innovation officer at Axio, a cyber security risk analysis company. Fitch estimates that the number of insured losses will not exceed $10 billion, ending somewhere in the mid- to high-single billions and that the industry largely priced those in. The cybersecurity insurance market did get lucky, in some respects, with the CrowdStrike meltdown. "Cyber events that have more of a physical consequence would be much bigger in size or scope in terms of losses," Glombicki said.

President Biden’s announcement on Sunday that he would leave the presidential race effectively pushed Donald J. Trump and the Republican National Convention from the spotlight. A Trump campaign spokesman did not immediately respond to request for comment. But Mr. Biden’s announcement on Sunday that he would exit the presidential race effectively pushed Mr. Trump and his convention from the spotlight. The Trump campaign also filed a complaint on Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission accusing Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris of violating campaign finance laws by rolling Mr. Biden’s campaign funds over to Ms. Harris. The complaint, filed by Mr. Warrington, came after Mr. Biden’s team had amended the name of its campaign committee on Sunday to Harris for President.

CNN —The Olympic Games’ Opening Ceremony is “in danger” after a protest and possible strike action by more than 200 dancers due to take part in Friday’s ceremony, a union representative for the dancers told CNN Tuesday. On Monday, some 220 dancers stopped a rehearsal along the banks of Paris’ River Seine – along which the Opening Ceremony is due to take place – to protest inequalities in pay and housing conditions between the dancers. This year’s Opening Ceremony will be the first ever held on a river. Some 104,000 people in stands lining the River Seine will watch the event, with 220,000 more on raised roadways along a six-kilometer (nearly four miles) stretch of the river, according to French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin. For years, French officials had boasted that some 600,000 people would attend the Opening Ceremony, but that number has been slashed due to safety concerns.

CNN —France’s Interior Ministry rejected around 5,000 security accreditation requests for Olympics volunteers and workers, with roughly 1,000 of those cases blocked due to suspicions of meddling or espionage. The Ministry outlined in a statement on Tuesday that it conducted “about a million” administrative investigations into various staff for the 2024 Paris Games. Of those checks, varying threats were identified, including meddling and espionage, convicted criminal records, illegal alien statuses, radical Islam, and ultra-right and ultra-left ideologies. The statement re-iterated that this will be the first Opening Ceremony taking place outside of a stadium for the Summer Games, creating significant security challenges. However, the ministry expressed its confidence, stating that it’s “now ready” after final rehearsals took place on Tuesday evening.

Opinion | Who Might Run With Kamala Harris?

2 Spot” (news article, July 23):Vice President Kamala Harris, assuming she is the Democratic presidential nominee, has several good options for completing her ticket. But I urge Ms. Harris and her advisers to cast a wider net initially. Nothing in the Constitution would prevent Barack Obama from serving as vice president; indeed, the Republicans considered a similar move with former President Gerald Ford in 1980. Mark Milley, a retired general and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is a war hero and a true patriot. Doing so would knock the Trump campaign off balance and, most important, inject a rare note of bipartisanship into our poisoned polity.

The government’s repeated failure to address what it knew quickly fed suspicions that the silence itself was evidence of a conspiracy. In the wake of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, we are seeing that happen again. Neither the public nor Congress learned much more when Kimberly Cheatle, the director of the Secret Service at the time of the shooting, appeared before a congressional committee on Monday. Ms. Cheatle acknowledged that the shooting at the Trump rally ranked as the agency’s “most significant operational failure” in decades. But there was outrage from both Democrats and Republicans at her repeated refusal to answer specific questions about the security failures that contributed to it.

Eleven of the last 12 American presidents have endured an assassination attempt or a plot against their lives. The same is true for 20 of the country’s 45. Most of the recent plots have been foiled early, making the indelible image of Donald Trump fist-pumping in Pennsylvania seem like an atavistic monument or an ominous portent or perhaps both. And though we may describe the stochastic terror of the past decade in terms of ugly bumper stickers and reckless speeches, there has been real violence, not just incitement. “No political party, movement, ideology or manner of thinking has had an absolute monopoly on this violence, and it really hasn’t mattered whether the surrounding political atmosphere was aggressive or docile,” Dayen wrote.

Classic car aficionados recall their sleek, innovative designs, but the brands are also a reminder of another bygone era: the traditional defined benefit pension. Their pension plans were terminated, leaving thousands of workers without their expected benefits. That, along with other pension plan failures, prompted efforts to make retirement savings safer, culminating in federal legislation that has shaped much of the current retirement benefit landscape. The Employee Retirement Income Security Act, or ERISA, which was signed into law in 1974 by President Gerald R. Ford, marks its 50th anniversary this year. It also created the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, a federally sponsored insurance fund that backstops failing pension plans.

The newly-formed left-wing coalition, the New Popular Front (NFP), came second with 28%, while Macron’s Ensemble alliance trailed in a distant third with 21%. In the outgoing parliament, Macron’s alliance had only 250 seats, and so needed support from other parties to pass laws. In an attempt not to split the anti-far right vote, more than 200 candidates from Macron’s alliance and the NFP agreed to stand down in the second round. Whatever the result of Sunday’s vote, France seems set to endure a period of political chaos, with Macron unable to call another parliamentary election for at least a year. Andrea Robin Skinner, a daughter of the Canadian Nobel laureate Alice Munro, said that her stepfather sexually abused her as a child — and that her mother knew about it, and chose to stay with him anyway. Skinner, who is now an adult, detailed these accusations in an essay in the Toronto Star on Sunday. According to a separate article in the Toronto Star, Skinner went to the Ontario police, and in 2005, her stepfather, Gerald Fremlin, was charged with indecent assault against her. Because of her mother’s fame, Skinner wrote, “the silence continued.” Munro died on May 13 at 92. “What I wanted was some record of the truth, some public proof that I hadn’t deserved what had happened to me,” Skinner wrote of going to the police in 2005, about 30 years after the abuse began.

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has said French voters now have a "moral duty" to halt the party's advance. The officer — a father of three who's in his 40s, and a right-leaning voter — said the polarization in French society was "very worrying, but unfortunately normal with the 'diversity' of our society." The police officer said he expected civil unrest after the vote, whichever party gained the most votes. "There will be civil unrest whoever is elected, this is France and the people speak their mind." Civil unrest possiblePolitical experts agree that the current febrile atmosphere of French politics, and antagonism between the main bodies of voters, are the ingredients for further civil unrest.
