The nature of illegal lockouts means they are hard to track directly. One of the responding officers calls a sergeant over, who says there's nothing else they can do. While only 14% of lockout calls led to a police report, 86% of calls about shoplifting did. As they walk over, one of the officers tells the other to look up "illegal lockout" on his phone. A 2006 bill that would have defined illegal lockouts for all Illinois residents was defeated.

New Jersey businessman and co-owner of The Philadelphia Inquirer, George Norcross walks to Judge Patricia McInerney's courtroom at City Hall in Philadelphia. The New Jersey Democratic power broker charged with racketeering by the state attorney general pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges he threatened people whose properties he sought to take over and orchestrated tax incentive legislation to benefit organizations he controlled. "My client emphatically states that he is not guilty," Norcross' attorney Michael Critchley told Judge Peter Warshaw. A longtime kingmaker in southern New Jersey, Norcross often wielded influence through back channels. His brothers are lobbyist and co-defendant Philip Norcross — who pleaded not guilty on Tuesday as well — and U.S. Rep. Donald Norcross, a former state legislator who is not charged.

The attorneys general argued that relief was unconstitutional, among other things, and requested the relief — and the plan overall — be blocked. The ruling still preserves borrowers' abilities to enroll and make payments through the plan. AdvertisementBoth of the rulings are preliminary, and while student-loan forgiveness is blocked for the time being, courts have yet to hand down their final rulings. New Jersey officials revealed this week that they are looking at the licenses at his three golf courses there. Say Trump is landlord to the bar operators at one of these properties, and it's the bar operators who hold the liquor license, Pierce said. If Trump is charging the bar a flat rent, his felony status won't impact that liquor license. Trump would still have options, though, even if his hush-money conviction voided one or more of his liquor licenses.

Billionaire bitcoin investor Michael Saylor and the company he founded, MicroStrategy , will pay $40 million to settle a tax fraud lawsuit brought by the Washington D.C. Attorney General, the AG's office announced Monday. The D.C. attorney general charged both Saylor and MicroStrategy with tax evasion, claiming that the company helped its founder disguise his D.C. residency so that he could avoid paying higher income taxes. MicroStrategy also allegedly failed to pay the corporate taxes required for a company employing D.C. residents, of which Saylor was only one of several. The original suit against Saylor was brought in 2022 by former D.C. attorney general Karl Racine. A major private student-loan company is leaving the servicing industry. But before that happens, a group of Democratic lawmakers want it to give some borrowers debt relief. On Wednesday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren led eight of her Democratic colleagues in sending a letter — first reviewed by Business Insider — to Navient's CEO David Yowan, requesting that the company cancel "decades-old predatory private student loans" using a consumer protection law established by the Federal Trade Commission. AdvertisementBut there might be an avenue to still get those borrowers debt cancellation. "Navient should stop making borrowers apply for relief and instead automatically cancel student debt using information the company already has about whether borrowers attended schools that would entitle them to relief," they wrote.
