Eight economists, investment chiefs, and strategists that Business Insider recently spoke to credited healthier-than-anticipated consumer balance sheets and spending for the continued expansion. A onetime commodities backwater, congestion trading has become a growing business in recent years as the demand for electricity and volatility on the power grid in the US has soared. The financial category, which includes specialized power-trading companies, banks, hedge funds, and large proprietary trading firms, dominates the market, in part because the physical power firms typically operate in only one or two regions. He launched three congestion trading teams for the firm, including in California and Texas after those states introduced congestion trading in 2008 and 2010, respectively. Citadel, along with Susquehanna International Group and Tower Research, has been involved in FTR trading since the market's infancy. Volatility has been increasing on the power grid, in part because of changing weather patterns, Jeev added.

So is “Piglet” a frothy, fun, forgettable confection, or is it heftier, meatier, the kind of “serious” book that might win prizes, or even male readers? If I owned a bookstore, I’d hand-sell “Piglet” to everyone. “What is it about you and more, more, more?”There’s a lot Hazell doesn’t tell us about Piglet. We don’t know her age or her size, her eye color or hair color, or how long she’s been a cookbook editor. Then, the writing becomes lush and lavish, with mouthwatering descriptions of “new potatoes, boiled and dotted with a bright salsa verde.

The MSCI World Index shifts regional and country weights based on broader economic trends. High levels of market concentration in the late 1920s to early 1930s, as well as 2000, coincided with a market top, he noted. Read previewThe S&P 500's 22% tear over the last few months may just be getting started, according to Sevens Report Research, a market research firm with clients that include top Wall Street banks like JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, UBS, and more. On the valuations front, the S&P 500's multiple would only have to rise fairly slightly to lift the index to 6,000. "The S&P 500 is already trading with an elevated forward P/E multiple of over 20X expected 2024 EPS," he said. "If sentiment gets frothy, however, and stocks trade with a multiple pushing 22X, which is far from unheard of as the forward multiple of the S&P 500 hit 21.4 on 1/2/2022, then the S&P 500 could surpass 6,000 in H2'24." Essaye also said small-cap stocks cyclical sectors like big banks, and materials and transportation firms would do well in a soft-landing scenario.

How Does Alcohol Affect the Gut Microbiome?
  + stars: | 2024-01-30 | by ( Alice Callahan | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
But what does alcohol do to the trillions of microbes living in your gut? As with much of microbiome science, “there is a lot that we don’t know,” said Dr. Lorenzo Leggio, a physician-scientist who studies alcohol use and addiction at the National Institutes of Health. And as scientists begin to explore how drinking may influence your gut, they’re learning that overdoing it could have some unhappy consequences. How does heavy drinking affect your microbiome? Most of the available research on alcohol and the microbiome has focused on people who drink regularly and heavily, said Dr. Cynthia Hsu, a gastroenterologist at the University of California, San Diego.

PARIS (AP) — An air of surrealism enveloped Chanel’s Spring Couture show Tuesday as celebrity guests including Naomi Campbell and Kendrick Lamar faced a navigational challenge: walking past a towering pair of open metal scissors. Here are some highlights of Tuesday’s spring couture shows:BUTTONS AND BALLETThe button is a humble icon, but it was not always so. Viard used the button-jewels as a spice for the drama of the ballet stage, scattering them across contrasting and often segmented silhouettes. The house was keenly aware of its history: 2024 marks a century since Coco Chanel first ventured into ballet design. In a world that often seeks the innovative, Mabille reminds us of the enduring allure of classic couture.

CNN —The iconic tulle tutu worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in the opening credits of “Sex and the City” proved a star lot in an auction of “iconic” fashion pieces from film, TV and celebrity wardrobes on Thursday, selling for $52,000, more than four times its high estimate. The oyster-white, three-tier tutu skirt was expected to sell for $8,000-12,000, but drew 24 bids during a sale by Julien’s Auctions in California. The tutu “became a pop culture symbol,” according to the auction house, after Parker wore it in her role as Carrie Bradshaw in the smash-hit HBO TV series. The tutu also made an appearance in the 2008 “Sex and the City” movie, in a scene in which Carrie is clearing out her closet and deciding whether to keep certain outfits. The piece was sold with a certificate of authenticity signed by Field.

There is a wave of pandemic-era startups stuck in limbo right now. The days of seeing 80% to 100% year-on-year revenue growth are gone, Hussein Kanji from early-stage fund Hoxton Ventures told Business Insider. Hoxton Ventures' Hussein Kanji said the days of companies racking up 100% year-on-year revenue growth are over. Investors tend to assess whether a company is IPO-ready on the rule of 40, which is revenue growth plus EBIT margin. A trader works on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., October 27, 2023. October has lived up to its reputation for volatility, as a surge in Treasury yields and geopolitical uncertainty pressured stocks. Higher Treasury yields are seen as a headwind to stocks, in part because they compete with equities for buyers. More broadly, some believe the stock market's trading patterns this year point to a rebound in the fourth quarter. "The stock market is poised for a late Q4 rally."

The age gap between geriatric leaders and restless youth is “a major source of tension” in many African countries, said Simon Mulongo, a former African Union diplomat from Uganda.
