How Budweiser Tackled a Beer-Free World Cup
  + stars: | 2023-02-09 | by ( Katie Deighton | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +9 min
In the end, the brewer found a way to navigate the World Cup beer-free and roll with the media attention that the alcohol ban generated. Soccer’s 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar ran from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18. World Cup sponsors Kia and Adidas similarly maintained their reputational scores, according to the Morning Consult data. Budweiser doesn’t pay a reported $75 million for the official beer sponsorship of the World Cup just to serve beer at stadiums. But the ban on alcoholic Budweiser undermined the impetus for being at the World Cup, Mr. Marcondes said.
Therma helps restaurants like McDonald's reduce food and energy waste via fridge management. A startup helping restaurants like McDonalds and Starbucks save money on food and energy waste has just raised $19 million in a Series A round. San Francisco-based Therma, which was founded in 2019, uses IoT devices to turn "dumb" fridges and freezers into smart devices where temperature management can be automated. The company's tech can also monitor for any issues that could lead to food waste, which could be as simple as someone leaving the door open for an extended period. Meanwhile food waste is responsible for 10%, per WWF.

For influencers, receiving "gifted" items from brands can feel "excessive and gluttonous," one said. Many decline free products, or if they receive them, they don't always post about them. But some items, like furniture and luxury products, can make such a collaboration attractive. When the TikTok influencer Victoria Paris became famous on social media, she began to get so many free products from brands that she felt overwhelmed. Creators and other industry insiders said gifted partnerships that involve furniture — as well as a few other types of luxury items — could be mutually beneficial.

XC athletes often get top accommodations close to the race start, which makes the early morning take off easier. Many of the business executives told the Times they were drawn to the mental and physical challenges the race provides.

Subway says it plans to roll out more smart fridges, which can understand speech and sell premade sandwiches. Subway says that, like its Grab and Go counters, the fridges are designed for places like airports and hospitals. Its smart fridge uses AI and natural language processing so that "guests can talk directly to the smart fridge and ask about any of the products inside," Subway says. And because the sandwiches are premade with no customizations, they'll be quicker and easier for staff to make, reducing expenditure on labor. SubwayIn 2020, Subway started rolling out kiosk displays that sell sandwiches premade by franchisees at Subway stores.

New York CNN Business —Your next Subway order could come from a vending machine. Subway reported strong third-quarter sales Monday and publicly unveiled its first Grab and Go “smart fridge” filled with premade sandwiches, snacks and drinks. Subway is rolling out Grab & Go fridges that have pre-mad sandwiches. In 2020 the company began selling premade sandwiches in regular fridges at retail locations like casinos, gas stations and airports. Subway attributed its recent success to its new “Subway Series” menu — which was streamlined to help speed up service — and an increase in digital orders.
The couple moved to Rio, where their two-bedroom apartment near the beach is half the rent. We moved to NYC in summer 2018, and my partner had promised me "two winters." Brazil won me over when I realized my income would stretch five to six times as far there as in the US. In Rio, we pay 5,000 reals, or about $1,000, for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with a home office and 24-hour doorman. We split that cost, so rent costs me about 2,500 reals a month.
[1/5] Syrian refugees sit with their belongings on a pick-up truck as they prepare to return to Syria from Wadi Hmayyed, on the outskirts of the Lebanese border town of Arsal, Lebanon October 26, 2022. REUTERS/Mohamed AzakirARSAL, Lebanon Oct 26 (Reuters) - Hundreds of Syrian refugees living in Lebanon returned home on Wednesday, the first day of repatriations organised by Beirut, amid concerns from rights groups that the scheme may involve elements of coercion. Lebanese authorities say the repatriations, under a revived programme run coordinated by the country's General Security agency, are voluntary. In 2018, the General Security agency launched a mechanism through which any Syrian refugee could signal a desire to return home, liaise with Syrian authorities to make sure that individual was not wanted there. That pathway saw around 400,000 Syrians return home but was put on hold with the outbreak of COVID-19.
As Algeria's foreign currency reserves fell by two thirds in six years and the long-term risk of unrest grew, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's government pushed reforms to strengthen the private sector, boosting local businesses. He passed some reforms but now enjoys high demand for Algerian energy and surging revenues. Free zones are going to be set up, customs code has been changed to make it more attractive for foreign investment, we have a new investment code," Agli said. A former government adviser on economic affairs said the authorities understood the need to press ahead with reforms despite the increase in energy revenue this year. We are running short of time because oil prices are so volatile and a global recession is a likely scenario," the former adviser said.

Energy firms told Reuters that angry customers in Germany phone them every day about surging bills. It comes as Russia chokes gas supply to Germany, leading to more expensive energy bills. "Many underestimate the extent of the energy crisis and the associated price increases overall." The upset over soaring energy bills has also been apparent in German bakeries. A guild said that bakeries are severely impacted by the energy crisis because their ovens and fridges guzzle a lot of power.
Silicon Valley, perhaps even more than the rest of corporate America, has long been engaged in a two-sided battle over the pursuit of happiness. In the Silicon Valley that emerges on Blind, the engineers who strive for work-life balance are just as burned out as the late-night grinders. But Silicon Valley has always overindexed for Optimizers. If this is Silicon Valley today, nobody's happy, and everybody's burnt. Stereotypically, Silicon Valley engineers are grinders.
