In 1970 there had been only 18,333 students enrolled at degree-granting for-profit schools, less than a quarter of a percent of the total number of college students. In 2010, Tom Harkin, chair of the Senate's education committee, began a two-year investigation into for-profit schools. But even more shocking, federal money flowing to for-profit schools accounted for 25% of all federal student aid and 47% of eventual loan defaults. Students' money enriched every corner of the for-profit industry except one: quality of instruction. In fact, these for-profit students were actually worse off than if they hadn't gone to school at all.

DHAKA, Bangladesh — Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country on Monday, the army chief said, a day after nearly 100 people were killed in clashes with the police as protesters demanded she step down. The government in Bangladesh reimposed a curfew on Sunday and restricted cellular communication, as clashes during protests across the country left over a dozen people dead. Revived and expanded student protests, after a deadly government crackdown late last month, and a call by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s governing party for its own supporters to also take to the streets, have plunged the country of over 170 million into a particularly dangerous phase. At least 20 people were killed on Sunday across Bangladesh, according to tallies by local news media, adding to the more than 200 people killed in the crackdown on protests in July. Coordinators of the student protests said in a statement that Sunday’s death toll was more than 50 — a number that could not be independently verified. What began as a peaceful student protest last month over a preferential quota system for public-sector jobs has morphed into unprecedented anger at Ms. Hasina’s increasingly authoritarian turn and her management of the economy.

CNN —A day after getting the election subversion case against Donald Trump back, the presiding federal judge rejected another effort by the former president to have the case dismissed. Earlier this summer, the Supreme Court granted Trump sweeping immunity for official acts as president, and the case, brought by special counsel Jack Smith, is now back in the hands of Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington, DC. The judge also found that Trump’s suggestions that Biden attempted to influence prosecutors was unfounded. In her ruling Saturday, Chutkan rejected Trump’s arguments that the case in Washington was brought only because Trump pleaded not guilty to charges of mishandling classified information in Florida — a case that was recently dismissed. “Defendant’s decision to enter a not guilty plea in Florida does not establish a realistic likelihood that this prosecution was vindictive,” Chutkan wrote.

I considered the headway I could make in the audiobook of “Demon Copperhead,” but quickly abandoned that option for several episodes of the podcast “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.” I wanted company. Conan and his sidekicks shoot the breeze for a while, before he brings on a celebrity guest for an interview. The shows I love aren’t the ones where a host tees up questions and a dutiful guest answers. Conan O’Brien has been having conversations professionally for most of his career.
