Spending by the ever-reliable US consumer is about to fizzle out, according to a Bloomberg investor survey. Such resilience has staved off widespread recession fears, but as household savings run out, the fortunes of the US economy could reverse. AdvertisementAdvertisementIndeed, excess savings accumulated since the pandemic are poised to evaporate by as early as the end of September, the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco has said. "We still have very high prices, but we don't have all of that funny money around anymore, and the excess savings are going negative." The famed investor says the drying up of consumer savings is set to hammer corporate profits as spending declines.

Cramer warns Wall Street's AI craze may be peaking
  + stars: | 2023-09-11 | by ( Julie Coleman | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday suggested that Wall Street's artificial intelligence craze may be reaching its peak. Cramer wondered if AI is having a GoPro moment as he compared companies touting AI offerings to the action camera fad years ago. But he questioned companies advertising AI directly to the consumer, cautioning investors that many may be hyping AI to raise their stock's valuation. According to Cramer, AI is intended to save businesses money, not serve individual consumers. "Unless there's a return on investment that's tangible and visible, generative AI may not be all that valuable," he said.

He was the US Special Envoy for Syria and the senior director for Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon on the National Security Council staff during the Trump administration. After that, China’s National Bureau of Statistics said it would suspend publishing youth unemployment data in the future. What does it signify that China’s national power, which today is vast, is almost certain to be weaker in the future? If Xi and his strategists have a feasible plan for nimbly averting China’s demographic doom, they are keeping very quiet about it. This brings us back to the question of national security strategies for the United States and its allies.

IS CLIMATE CHANGE AFFECTING HURRICANES? Yes, climate change is making hurricanes wetter, windier and altogether more intense. If it were not for the oceans, the planet would be much hotter due to climate change. Climate change can also boost the amount of rainfall delivered by a storm. It is unclear, however, if climate change is affecting the number of hurricanes that form each year.

CNN —A highly mutated new variant of the virus that causes Covid-19 has countries on alert as scientists scramble to understand how far it has spread and how well our immunity will defend against it. The World Health Organization designated BA.2.86 a “variant under monitoring” on Thursday, a designation that encourages countries to track and report the sequences they find. Foreign investors are giving up on China as the country's post-COVID rebound fizzles. During that span, foreign investors sold 46.2 billion yuan of mainland Chinese stocks. Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors shed 37 billion yuan worth of Chinese bonds in July, according to data out Wednesday from China's foreign exchange regulator. According to Reuters, $1.71 billion worth of mainland shares were sold by foreigners in May, outpacing April's $659 million withdrawal. In addition to the consumer and manufacturing sectors, the real estate market — which serves as a key store of wealth in China's economy — has also been getting worse.

I've had the opportunity to mentor several people during my 20-year career in tech as a senior leader at companies like Amazon and eBay. To start your mentorship off right, come prepared with specific, time-based goals for what you'd like to accomplish. Without knowing why you want a promotion, what the promotion duties look like, and when you want to achieve a promotion, your mentor won't be able to give the specific feedback you need. Without this practice, not only will you not make progress, but you'll end up re-hashing the same conversation from the previous meeting. This will be a waste of time for you and your mentor and quickly result in a frustrating and unsuccessful mentorship.

"Barbenheimer" remains red-hot at the box office. Domestically, "Barbenheimer" saw smaller-than-average second week ticket sales drops as millions of moviegoers headed to cinemas to catch the popular flicks. Second week numbers are often looked at by box office analysts as an indicator of whether a film will have longevity at the box office or will fizzle quickly. Similarly, the confluence of these two films boosted the overall domestic box office compared with last year's haul to this point. The overall domestic box office still lags behind prepandemic levels by around 16%, however.

Here's which entertainment companies will outperform, according to analysts and industry insiders. Four industry veterans Insider spoke with unanimously agreed that unless the strikes are resolved soon, the movie industry's much-needed revival will fizzle out. In a mid-July note about the movie industry, Reese and Pachter highlighted three theater-related companies that are best positioned to survive in this difficult environment. FuboTV should be a winner since it's a solid alternative for cord cutters who still need news and sports coverage, which aren't impacted by the strikes, Pachter noted. Netflix is perhaps the most fascinating company in the media industry right now.

Remy Cointreau confident on H2 rebound after weak start to year
  + stars: | 2023-07-25 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
PARIS, July 25 (Reuters) - French spirits group Remy Cointreau (RCOP.PA) on Tuesday reported a fall in first-quarter organic sales, reflecting weaker U.S. demand, high year-ago comparables and destocking, and said it was banking on a sharp rebound in sales in the U.S. from the third quarter. The recovery in China, which makes 35% of group sales at par with the United States, was led by all cognac brands including CLUB, VSOP, XO and Louis XIII. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Remy Cointreau and rivals such as Pernod Ricard (PERP.PA) benefited from people drinking more expensive types of alcohol at home. There have, however, been signs that spirits industry growth was slowing, notably in the United States, as positive effects from the pandemic fizzle out. Goldman Sachs said the odds of a recession in the next 12 months have fallen to 20% from 25% earlier. In a note on Monday, the bank's chief economist, Jan Hatzius, put the odds of a recession in the next 12 months at 20%, down from an earlier estimate of 25%. Meanwhile, Goldman is also putting less emphasis on the inverted yield curve, a traditionally reliable indicator of an approaching recession. But in today's cycle, it may be misguided, due in part to the possibility that the Fed may cut rates to respond to slowing inflation, not a recession, Hatzius said. For the US, the bank forecast only one remaining interest rate hike, in line with what a majority of investors expect.

With summer movie season at its midpoint, Hollywood typically begins to turn its gaze toward the fall, when a trio of major film festivals acts as the unofficial kickoff to Oscar season. That’s because SAG-AFTRA is prohibiting members from promoting any film while the strike is on, an across-the-board ban that includes interviews, photo calls and red-carpet duties. Without those appearances, festivals will be sapped of the star power that is invaluable to raising a film’s profile. The first event that will probably be affected is the Venice Film Festival, which begins its 80th edition on Aug. 30 with the premiere of the sexy tennis comedy “Challengers,” starring Zendaya. Venice has lately rivaled Cannes for glamour and headlines, so the loss of famous actors would be a big blow.

REUTERS/Aly Song/File PhotoJuly 13 (Reuters) - A look at the day ahead in Asian markets from Jamie McGeever, financial markets columnist. The one percentage point fall in June headline consumer price inflation to 3.0% strengthened hopes that the U.S. economy is heading for a 'soft landing', boosting risk appetite and, more importantly for emerging markets, slamming the dollar. The yen has risen five days in a row, its longest winning streak against the dollar since November. Russian crude exports rebounded sharply last week to the highest in nearly two months. But the Kremlin's revenue from oil and gas taxes sank 26% in June from a year ago. Meanwhile, Russia's gas exports to Europe have tumbled and were the biggest drag on revenue from that energy source. The Kremlin has tried to prop up oil prices, and recently joined Saudi Arabia in extending voluntary crude production cuts into the summer. However, Russia's previous pledges to trim output were followed by increases in oil exports, suggesting Moscow wasn't actually pulling back on production.
