Since the trial began in late September, Trump has been fined twice by Judge Arthur Engoron for breaking a gag order that bars him from making public comments about the judge’s staff, stormed out of the courtroom and been made to watch as two of his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, testified this week. His daughter Ivanka Trump is slated to testify on Tuesday. Both sons held the title of executive vice president after their father was elected president. Eric Trump, who maintained more direct involvement in the company, provided more detailed testimony and was at times chippy in his responses to prosecutors who sought to tease out his specific role. During testimony on Friday, he acknowledged he was aware of the Trump Organization's statements of financial condition as far back as 2013 after repeatedly denying knowledge of them.

The others will use a combination of renewables, nuclear power, and natural gas with carbon capture and storage. Putting federal money behind a program to fight climate change while using natural gas, a fossil fuel, as one of its main ingredients may not seem intuitive. To wit, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, where the funding for the hydrogen hubs comes from, specifically required that two of the selected hydrogen hubs be located in natural gas-rich regions. Making hydrogen from natural gas with carbon capture will require additional energy and be more expensive than producing hydrogen from natural gas where the excess carbon emissions just spew into the atmosphere. That is what the U.S. government is trying to change with its hydrogen hubs program and the production tax credit.

The Jordan campaign for speaker may turn into a liability for Republican members in districts won by Biden in 2020. Jim Jordan is a radical election denier who does not represent the values of this district and Tom Kean Jr. should be ashamed of his vote. I asked Michael Olson, a political scientist at Washington University in St. Louis, about the possible costs of a Jordan vote for these 12 Republicans in Democratic-leaning seats. Republican respondents, however, are more approving of a conservative Republican representative and less approving of a representative who voted to impeach Trump. As a result, I doubt this one vote will be as consequential as something like voting to impeach Trump.”

Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman plans to retire by May 2024, leaving big shoes to fill. AdvertisementAdvertisementSuccession has traditionally been a bloody sport on Wall Street with the losers leaving and taking their lieutenants with them. Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman, who plans to retire by May 2024, wants the buck the trend so the bank can hold onto all three candidates. "Wall Street has had a history of that not happening," said Gorman in a July earnings call. With Morgan Stanley at the top of its game, breaking up this well-oiled team could be disastrous.

The attacks prompted Israel to launch an intensive bombing campaign against the Gaza Strip, which is governed by Hamas. “I cannot remember a time when Israel’s struggle for security was not at the forefront of my mind,” Mr. Lew said. If confirmed, I will uphold President Biden’s commitment to deny Iran a nuclear weapon.”But his declarations did little to deter Republican senators. Senator John Barrasso, Republican of Wyoming, accused Mr. Lew of acting as the Iranian government’s banker by negotiating deals to release funds in exchange for American prisoners. “Preventing this from becoming a multifront war is hugely important for Israel, for the region, for the world,” he said.

For 2 days, Deutsche Banks' in-house Trump credit reports flashed on screens at his NY fraud trial. For a second day on Thursday, a former Deutsche Bank executive sat on the witness stand as years of his firm's confidential Trump "credit reports" flashed across two big screens. Trump never missed a loan payment, the credit reports and the banker's testimony showed. In almost a decade as a borrower, Trump was never even late making a payment – not before, during, or after his presidency. Former President Donald Trump says he’s so far ahead that it would only help his competitors if he participated. STRIKING POLITICSThe Republican debate is playing out as thousands of U.S. auto workers strike in swing-state Michigan. While shutdowns are not popular with most voters, Republican presidential contenders typically align themselves with the party’s hardline conservatives, who hold the most power in Republican primary elections. The issue is especially critical for DeSantis and Scott, who have struggled since delivering underwhelming performances in the first debate. That's because some Republican candidates see it as one of Trump's biggest political weaknesses.

They gave everything from their pensions on, and they saved the automobile industry,” Biden said Monday from the White House. Biden is also leaning in on his union support at a time when labor enjoys broad support from the public, with 67% of Americans approving of labor unions in an August Gallup poll. White House officials dismissed the notion that Trump forced their hand and noted that Biden was headed to Michigan at the request of UAW President Shawn Fain, who last week invited the sitting president to join the strikers. “He is pro-UAW, he is pro-workers, that is this president,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday. Biden will join the striking United Auto Workers on the picket line — a first for any president. Trump, like Biden, will also head to Detroit and hold an event to garner support for his 2024 run. The DeSantis campaign believes a win in Iowa might push other candidates from the field, leaving him as voters' primary alternative to former President Donald Trump, the current favorite. “China is the greatest strategic and economic threat facing the United States in the 21st century,” Pence said in his speech at the Hudson Institute in Washington, DC. For months, China as a foreign policy adversary has been the favored topic of Republican primary candidates. Nikki Haley, who served as ambassador to the United Nations, made a point of spelling out how adversarial the relationship between the United States and China has become. “Yes, I view China as an enemy.”Haley has also used China as a way to frame Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris as weak and incompetent. REUTERS/Elizabeth Frantz/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 15 (Reuters) - Closing arguments were set for Friday in the impeachment trial of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, following eight days of testimony from whistle blowers alleging corruption and defenders saying he did nothing wrong. Paxton, a conservative Republican firebrand who is strongly aligned with former U.S. President Donald Trump, faces 16 articles of impeachment in the trial, in which the Republican-dominated Texas Senate serves as the jury. It is the first impeachment proceeding against a statewide office holder in Texas in over a century. As attorney general, Paxton backed powerful oil and gas interests and pursued restrictions on abortion and transgender rights. He has led Republican state opposition to the policies of Democratic presidents, and filed an unsuccessful lawsuit seeking to overturn Trump's 2020 election defeat.

She praised Biden for his outreach to liberals, but told The Guardian he needed to continue his efforts in 2024. The New York lawmaker told the outlet that Biden's previous outreach "is not one and done." "But that being said, I know that this is why, to me, support of President Biden has been very important, because this question is larger than any policy differences. "In 2020 the Biden campaign, after the nomination, did work very hard to unite the party," she told The Guardian. Hand-raising is a juvenile and reductive exercise in any political debate, but it’s worth unpacking this moment, which provides clarity into the damage that Mr. Trump has inflicted on his own party. But even Nikki Haley, though she generally tried to position herself as a reasonable alternative to Mr. Ramaswamy’s earsplitting drivel, raised her hand. Only Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson demonstrated some respect for the rule of law by opposing the election of a criminal. Mr. Hutchinson said Mr. Trump was “morally disqualified” from being president because of what happened on Jan. 6, and made the interesting argument that he may also be legally disqualified under the 14th Amendment for inciting an insurrection. Mr. Christie said the country had to stop “normalizing” Mr. Trump’s conduct, which he said was beneath the office of president.

Here are six takeaways from the first 2024 Republican presidential primary debate:Taking shots at RamaswamyWith Trump absent from Wednesday’s debate, the the early target of most of the debate participants was not DeSantis or South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott or any candidate who has ever held elected office before. DeSantis clarified: “Well, statewide.” Asked if he would support a federal six-week abortion ban, DeSantis talked about his electoral victory in Florida. And no one clearly stated they would sign a six-week federal abortion ban – even if they’d approved such laws as governors. At one end of the spectrum stood Haley, who sparred with Pence over the possibility of passing a federal ban. Ahead of the debate, Republican strategists argued that this was the approach Scott wanted to take because it’s his authentic self.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump has attracted a lot of attention for his lead in the polls and the money race, but he’s also already ahead in an essential area that’s gotten less notice: the delegate process. Republicans often point to Jeff Roe, who is leading the pro-DeSantis super PAC, as an expert on the delegate process. The delegate process rivalry between DeSantis and Trump speaks to the overall strategy of many of these campaigns. Trump’s state party advantageIn 2016, the idea that Donald Trump would eventually have deep roots with state Republican party officials seemed outlandish. The Trump campaign denies the former president ever made such a comment.

The first Republican presidential debate is scheduled for August 23, 2023, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Without Trump at the debate, seven other candidates are set to make their cases for the White House. Here's a look at how the debate is coming together, as the GOP candidates had to meet a set of criteria to even appear onstage. Christie, once a close ally of Trump, has consistently been the fiercest critic of the former president in the GOP race. Suarez, should he make it onstage, will likely just focus on boosting his profile to GOP voters beyond South Florida.

CNN —Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s campaign on Sunday evening quickly tried to walk back comments the Democratic presidential candidate had made earlier in the day in support of a nationwide abortion restriction after the first three months of pregnancy. Kennedy’s position on abortion is that it is always the woman’s right to choose. He does not support legislation banning abortion,” the campaign said in a statement, attempting to clarify remarks Kennedy had made to an NBC reporter at the Iowa State Fair that had prompted praise from a major anti-abortion rights group. “Once a child is viable outside the womb, I think then the state has an interest in protecting the child,” Kennedy told NBC. CNN has reached out to SBA Pro-Life America about the Kennedy campaign’s subsequent statement.

CNN —Public campaign finance disclosures from Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s campaign reveal numerous payments to individuals and groups whose ideologies differ significantly from traditional Democratic Party politics, a review by CNN’s KFile finds. Kennedy’s campaign paid a litany of prominent activists – which includes some anti-vaccine advocates, public health conspiracy theorists and Republicans, either individually or through their businesses – the filings show. One anti-vax activist, whose company was paid by Kennedy, once famously compared vaccine mandates to prosecution of Jews during the Holocaust. Bigtree, a film producer who also founded the anti-vaccination group Informed Consent Action Network, regularly speaks against vaccination and public health measures. The Kennedy campaign did not respond to CNN’s comment requests.
