St. Olaf College boasted an 87.6% voter turnout rate in 2020, taking home the top prize in the All In Campus Democracy Challenge as the most civically engaged college campus in the country. The small liberal arts college reached that number with help from its “election ambassador program,” and this year, the school is looking to break its own record. “We are all about interpersonal connections,” said junior Roxi Wessel, an election ambassador. Several factors make St. Olaf the highest-voting college in the country, including its nonpartisan approach to the election ambassador program. Jen McAndrew, from Tuft University’s Tisch College of Civic Life, said that while Minnesota makes campus voting accessible, laws in other states are creating more barriers to entry.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — In the weeks following the vice presidential debate, Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz has been sounding more like the aggressive campaigner who got the role than the buttoned-up figure he’s cut since joining the ticket. Dressed in khakis and a navy Harris-Walz sweatshirt Monday, Walz delivered some of his sharpest attacks yet against former President Donald Trump. “I’m one or two interviews from being a regular on Fox News,” Walz said at a campaign stop in Valencia, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday. Before then, he had been almost completely missing on TV since becoming the Democratic vice presidential nominee and avoiding answering questions from the media. In the last few weeks, Walz has been barnstorming swing states, appearing on multiple media platforms, and sharpening his attacks against the Trump-Vance ticket.

"Nothing done wrong at all," Trump said in a lengthy response after a Republican voter from Florida said he had lost his vote because of his responses to the riot and the Covid pandemic. The voter also questioned why he should support Trump when so many people who held high positions in his administration, including former Vice President Mike Pence, weren't backing him this year. "The vice president, I disagree with him on what he did. Trump has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him in Washington and in another election interference case in Georgia. At the town hall, Trump also called Jan. 6, when rioters who delayed the electoral vote count for hours injured over 140 police officers, as "a day of love."

“What message do you think it sends to independent voters when you do not directly answer the question: Did Donald Trump lose in 2020?" “First of all, on the election of 2020, I’ve answered this question directly a million times: No. You could say — well, let’s say your view is that happened and we still think Trump lost, or that happened and we think that means Trump won,” Vance said. Harris told reporters that she "found it to be quite bizarre" when Trump said during an all-women Fox News town hall that aired Wednesday morning, "I’m the father of IVF." She argued that his appointment of Supreme Court justices who voted for Roe v. Wade to be overruled undermined his claim. Trump had made the comments on IVF during a town hall event that was taped on Tuesday but aired on Wednesday. Trump also said during the town hall that "we’re totally in favor of IVF." When reached for comment on Harris' remarks, Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said that Trump's comments about being "the father of IVF" were "a joke."

“Who the hell wants to hear questions?” Trump said at the event where the entire point was to take audience questions. It’s bizarre and raises more and more concerns for voters," said a Harris campaign adviser who also previously worked for President Joe Biden. “President Trump has more energy and more stamina than anyone in politics, and is the smartest leader this country has ever seen,” the statement read. Once it was clear that Trump wanted to listen to music, campaign staff behind the scenes started to scramble to accommodate the request. Democratic nominee Kamala Harris said on her campaign's X account that Trump rambled and "looked confused" on stage during the event. Almost 30 minutes into the town hall event, Trump paused the event so someone in the audience could receive treatment. Two minutes later, as Trump faced the fifth question of the night, another person became ill and the song played again. Kristi Noem of South Dakota asked Trump on stage, "Do you want to play your song and then greet a few people?" Black men have historically voted overwhelmingly for Democratic candidates, with turnout typically lagging that of Black women but consistent nonetheless. Even a relatively small drop in support from Black men for Harris could be significant given the razor-thin margins in battleground states. “Black men prioritize being the primary breadwinners of the household and care about real wages and permanent jobs. The Harris campaign also plans to ramp up its programming specifically designed to engage Black men. This week, it is set to partner with Black male celebrities, influencers and activists to hold “Black Men Huddle Up” events in battleground states, NFL and NCAA watch parties that will double as an avenue for Black men to discuss the stakes of the election.

Former President Donald Trump said Sunday that if elected he would ask Congress to pass legislation boosting the number of border patrol agents — several months after he thwarted a bipartisan measure that included staffing increases. Trump this year opposed a bipartisan measure that was the most aggressive border security bill in decades, one that would have imposed measures aimed at cutting the number of border crossings and tightening asylum rules. "That’s why he killed the bipartisan border bill that would’ve secured the border, despite the fact that it was endorsed by the Border Patrol," Corridoni said in a statement. Trump announced his plan to beef up border security shortly after members of the National Border Patrol Council, the labor union for Border Patrol agents and staff members, joined him onstage to voice their support for him. The same union, under a different president, endorsed the bipartisan bill that Trump helped block.

Almost half of young women have at least a bachelor’s degree compared to 37% of young men. That compares to 2008, when Barack Obama won the votes of 66% of young men. One of the biggest financial pressure points for young men has been higher rents, which are up around 20% since 2020. Young men are more likely to be financially dependent on their parents compared to young women, with 74% of women describing themselves as mostly financially independent compared to 62% of young men, according to a Pew survey. I think Trump will do better with young men than among young women — the gap will be pretty significant in terms of voter support — but I don’t think Trump’s going to win an overwhelming majority.

Former President Donald Trump on Friday repeatedly called for using the death penalty against migrants who kill U.S. citizens and law enforcement officers. "I’m hereby calling for the death penalty for any migrant who kills an American citizen or a law enforcement officer," Trump said at a campaign rally in Reno, Nevada. But Putin is not the only foreign leader Trump is talking to. And it is hardly unusual for a presidential nominee to begin holding some talks with foreign leaders. After the first attempt to assassinate Trump, in July, foreign leaders quickly moved to offer him their well-wishes. Trump has hosted Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso and former British Prime Minister David Cameron when he was the U.K.’s foreign secretary. Katulis was referring to the trove of classified documents Trump kept from his time in office that have become the subject of a criminal case, many of them about his communications with foreign leaders.

The Trump campaign had pounced on Harris’ comments Tuesday on ABC's "The View" that "there’s not a thing that comes to mind" when she was asked what she would have done differently from Biden during his term. The Trump campaign also cut a video interspersing Harris’ quote with news clips about the widely criticized withdrawal from Afghanistan and crime connected to migrants, as well as inflation. She said the legislation would have added 1,500 more border agents, "except Donald Trump got in the way of that bill." Harris took nearly a dozen questions from audience members at the town hall, which was moderated by journalist Enrique Acevedo, about issues from abortion to the cost of living. PHOENIX — Republican Kari Lake and Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego faced off in Arizona’s feisty first and only Senate debate Wednesday evening, trading shots over the border, abortion, tax policy and more. Lake has long made the border a cornerstone of her campaign, chastising Gallego for supporting the Biden-Harris administration’s immigration policies. Gallego, in turn, has made the bipartisan border bill that Trump and Lake opposed a big part of his campaign. “He acts like he cares about us,” Lake said of Gallego, “speaking directly to the women” watching the debate. Talking to the media immediately after the debate, Gallego said: “She needs to be loud, she needs to lie because she’s weak.

Americans for Prosperity Action, a super PAC affiliated with the Koch network of political advocacy groups, is launching a slate of new ads backing Republicans across multiple Senate battleground races, spending $8.75 million on a campaign focused largely on issues like the economy, inflation, and immigration. With party control of both chambers of Congress up for grabs in November, the group has spent about $60 million on election advertising already in 2024, according to FEC filings. Americans for Prosperity Action backed Nikki Haley for president in 2023 but has focused its efforts since then on promoting conservative down-ballot candidates through digital advertising, door-knocking, phone-banking and election mailers. The group is not investing in efforts to promote Donald Trump this fall. It has contacted more than 9 million voters about congressional races nationwide this election cycle.

Vice President Kamala Harris criticized former President Donald Trump on Monday over false claims he has made talking about disaster relief for victims of Hurricane Helene. Harris told reporters that there's a lot of "disinformation being pushed out there by the former president about what is available, in particular to the survivors of Helene," from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. A Trump campaign spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Monday night. Trump last week amplified a false claim about FEMA's disaster funds, saying they were being distributed to migrants who entered the U.S. illegally. “It’s really a shame that we’re putting politics ahead of helping people, and that’s what we’re here to do,” Criswell said.

The terror attack has helped push the Middle East to the brink of a wider regional war. One year after the massacre, the Middle East has only plunged deeper into violence and is on the brink of a broader war. Globally, the immediate concern is that oil supplies will diminish significantly should conflict spill over to the rest of the Middle East. Everyone but Biden can see this," wrote Andrew Exum, a former US deputy assistant secretary of defense for Middle East policy, in The Atlantic last week.
