"Investors should take advantage as munis are poised to deliver good performance into year-end and 2025, in our view," he added. Interest income from municipal bonds is free of federal income taxes. Further, if the investor resides in the same state that issues the bond, the interest income can be exempt from state taxes. Both of those tax cuts could reduce muni bond demand, Li said. As for any potential changes in the individual tax rate, UBS' Mukherjee doesn't necessarily see a big impact on demand.

The iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) is particularly interesting for swing traders, as it tends to trade within predictable ranges over extended periods. Given that IWM is trading at the top of the new trading range, I'm considering a bearish trade on IWM. With $242 as the upper bound of the range, I'll sell a $245 call option, just above the current resistance level. The trade As mentioned earlier, the trade structure I am using here is called a "bear call spread," also known as a "call credit spread". To construct my trade, I need to sell a $245 call option and buy a $250 call option as a single unit.

Exceptionally strong housing demand in the U.S. has large homebuilders in the driver's seat and smaller builders ripe for takeover. Whelan says she alone has four more set to close by year end, and there could be more from others. The surge is the result of still-growing housing demand that reignited at the start of the pandemic thanks to record low mortgage rates and sudden new migration. But mortgage rates also caused a historic housing shortage. That dynamic, sometimes called the mortgage rate lock-in effect, has exacerbated the housing shortage.

CNBC's Jim Cramer examined Tuesday's market action, saying the rally fueled by the victory of President-elect Donald Trump took a breather as Wall Street weighs what broad tax cuts could mean for the bond market. Cramer called the day's moves a "sobering reaction to the potential unfunded tax cuts from the bond market," as both the 10-year and 2-year Treasury yields surged more than 4%. The bond market and the stock market usually have a negative correlation, with investors coming in and out of each depending on yields. Trump campaigned on the promise of tax cuts across a wide swath of sectors. Many on Wall Street expect these cuts will come in aggregate, but remain unsure of the specifics, Cramer noted.

These trends — fueled by China Tobacco — come against the backdrop of a long-term decline in cigarette sales globally. While Beijing has made commitments to curb smoking prevalence, it hasn't appeared to have materially impacted tobacco sales. In the case of China Tobacco, industry and government policy directly overlap. "China Tobacco has been exploiting this insider status and wielding its influence within the government to effectively block the adoption of tobacco control policies," he added. Several software companies could be due for a pullback after the stock market's roaring rally this week, fueled by president-elect Donald Trump's election victory as well as robust quarterly earnings reports. Shares of video game makers Take-Two Interactive Software and Electronic Arts are two of the stocks that are technically overbought right now, according to the analysis. The most overbought stock this week was human capital management software company Dayforce, with an RSI of 92.4. But higher prices and expectations of normalizing pricing, which helped Coke guide its organic revenue growth this year to the high end of a prior forecast, could lead the stocks higher. Other oversold stocks include power generation company AES , as well as radio frequency equipment maker Qorvo and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals — the latter two of which were also oversold the previous week.

Our NFL writers addressed these topics and more in making one prediction for every team heading into the season’s second half. The fourth-year back is on pace to finish with 1,256 yards, which would be the fourth-highest total in team history. Every other NFL team has put a player in at least one of those categories during that stretch — and most teams have checked both boxes. Minnesota has one of the most productive defenses in the NFL and an offense loaded at the skill positions. And the Eagles have managed to win games despite bad luck and bad decisions.

CNN —Hours after former President Donald Trump was declared the winner of the 2024 election, the Biden administration moved Wednesday to limit oil drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Oil drilling had been banned for decades in the Arctic refuge — a pristine natural region in northeast Alaska home to a wide range of threatened species. But a law passed during the first Trump administration required the federal government to hold two lease sales there for fossil fuel drilling. The Biden administration signaled Wednesday it plans to move forward with a 400,000-acre auction — the lowest acreage it could legally offer. “Today’s action by the Biden administration better protects the Arctic Refuge, and for that, we are grateful,” said Kristen Miller, executive director of Alaska Wilderness League.

Nearly all the world’s countries pledged to strive to keep global warming under 1.5 degrees Celsius in the Paris Agreement, which scientists said would prevent cascading and worsening impacts such as droughts, heat waves and catastrophic sea level rise. Data released Wednesday by Europe’s Copernicus Climate Change Service shows 2024 is “virtually certain” to shoot above that threshold. “We don’t have time to stop,” Alex Scott, a climate diplomacy strategist at international think tank ECCO said Wednesday. It would be a more “serious” and “dramatic” step, said Alden Meyer, senior associate at climate think tank E3G and a longtime international climate expert. The analysts downgraded their growth forecasts across the region, down to 0.8% from their previous forecast of 1.1% for 2025. More significant than the actual tariff increases, though, will be the trade policy uncertainty that comes with them, the analysts say.
