When my son was little, his father and I went through a custody trial and agreed on a holiday-sharing schedule. It outlined that if my son spent a holiday with me, the following year, he would spend that same holiday with his dad. After a few years of splitting holidays up, I was compelled to work with his father on a better arrangement. While I love to have my son on Christmas Eve, it's nice when I have him on Christmas Day, too. After spending alternate years without him on either of those days, I think our way of dividing up the holidays works out so much better.

That's how one California prisoner's case failed before the District Court for the Eastern District of California. Cases against corrections officers run into another set of challenges under the doctrine of "qualified immunity." In prisons, BI has found, qualified immunity has also protected corrections officers who have been accused of excessive force. After losing at the district court level, McCoy appealed and got a rare finding from the judges of the 5th Circuit. AdvertisementOver the same five years in BI's sample, no federal judge found for the plaintiff in a single excessive-force claim filed by a California prisoner.

The Democratic Party, post-2016, was arguably in a deeper funk and more contentious state of internecine battle. MoveOn, another older liberal activist group, and the Working Families Party have reported similarly estimable engagement stats. “Those kinds of fights, I think, will energize the Democratic Party and become the defining issues in the 2026 elections and beyond,” said Ben Wikler, the chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party and a candidate to lead the national party. “We have been, for years, a party against Trump instead of a party for something,” Andrabi said. There should be less focus, these leaders said, on puncturing what has often been described by liberals as a personality campaign designed to sour Trump voters on Trump.

While Florida has managed to reverse the trend somewhat, the risk to homeowners is set to intensify. The Senate Budget Committee found that the rate of homeowners losing their private insurance also rose in Hawaii, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. Mark Friedlander, a spokesperson for the Insurance Information Institute, said the drop reflects a series of changes in recent years to stabilize the state's private insurance market after more than a dozen companies left the state or stopped writing new policies. The commission is working to overhaul regulations to slow the trend, including requiring private insurers to sell in risky areas. As insurers of last resort try to shift more risk to the private market, home insurance premiums are expected to keep rising.

Why some parents buy guns for their children
  + stars: | 2024-12-22 | by ( Eric Levenson | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
“Call it, I guess, a rite of passage.”That purchase reflects a relatively common American experience: Parents buying and gifting guns to their children for their birthday or around the holiday season. For example, the teenage school shooting suspects in Oxford, Michigan, and Winder, Georgia, allegedly used firearms they had received as Christmas gifts from their parents, and those parents have faced criminal charges. Jason Kelvie (right) and his family went target shooting last August at the Modern Sportsman in Burnsville, Minnesota. The Michigan and Georgia cases have pushed the limits of who is responsible for a mass school shooting to include, potentially, the parent. “The vast majority of people who buy guns for their kids or teach their children to shoot are not going to end up in a negative outcome like that,” Gutowski, the CNN contributor, said.

Blake Lively accused her co-star Justin Baldoni of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment on the set of “It Ends With Us,” and then trying to ruin her reputation after she expressed her concerns, according to a complaint she filed. During one alleged incident, Baldoni improvised numerous kisses during a scene, the complaint says. Another incident alleges that Baldoni did not act in character while they filmed a slow dance scene that did not require sound. The US Senate passed a bipartisan bill early Saturday to increase Social Security benefits for close to 3 million federal, state and local public sector workers, which includes firefighters, police officers and teachers. If the legislation is signed into law by President Joe Biden, it would apply to all benefits payable after December 2023. The Social Security Fairness Act — which already passed the House with overwhelming bipartisan support in November — eliminates two policies that have reduced Social Security benefits for public service employees. “The GPO reduces the spousal or surviving spousal benefits of people who receive pensions on the basis of noncovered employment,” CBO noted. The Summary NASA’s Parker Solar Probe is expected to dive extremely close to the solar surface on Dec. 24. The mission was designed to study the sun’s outer atmosphere and help researchers learn about how solar storms erupt into space. The agency’s Parker Solar Probe is days away from making its closest-ever approach to the sun on Tuesday, swooping nearer to our star than any other human-made object in history. As the Parker Solar Probe swoops close to the sun, it will likely fly through plumes of solar plasma and could even dive into active regions of the star, Korreck said. This busy phase, which is typically characterized by a flurry of solar storms and high magnetic activity, is known as the solar maximum.
