Elon Musk has a big task this week: convincing investors that Tesla is more than just a car company. It may do so once again as Elon Musk prepares to use the studio lot to tell another story: that Tesla is more than just a car company. The long-awaited event — originally scheduled for August — is meant to give weight to the electric vehicle maker's pitch that it is a tech company first and a car company second. Meanwhile, in July, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives claimed the "Tesla AI story could be worth $1 trillion-plus and is the most undervalued AI name." Pete Buttigieg says he and Elon Musk had a chat about Hurricane Helene relief efforts. That call proved "the best thing to do is just to pick up the phone," Buttigieg said on MSNBC. Buttigieg responded to Musk, writing: "No one is shutting down the airspace and FAA doesn't block legitimate rescue and recovery flights. "And, I think, to me it's an example of how often the best thing to do is just to pick up the phone." Massive East Coast port strike: five things to know
  + stars: | 2024-10-03 | by ( Ramishah Maruf | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
New York CNN —A massive port strike along the East and Gulf Coasts that kicked off on Tuesday has the potential to become one of America’s most disruptive work stoppages in recent times. Here’s the latest information you need to know about the port strike. People are panic-buying toilet paper, reports on social media show, displaying empty store shelves where toilet paper and sometimes paper towels used to be. Unlike toilet paper, bananas go bad, so shippers weren’t able to ship large volumes in advance of strikes. On Wednesday, Biden starkly warned against the “man-made disaster” caused by the ongoing port strike and urged the two sides to come to an agreement to avoid significant economic impacts.

Here’s the deal: The East Coast port strike is getting a lot of attention for its potential disruption to the economy — which is precisely the point. No dockworkers means no bananas (or whatever), which means no profits for the companies that produce and ship them. While research shows automation has obvious benefits, like lower operating costs and fewer human-related errors, port automation does not, on its own, significantly improve performance, according to a 2018 McKinsey report. But automation anxiety is rapidly spilling over into office work, where managers are adopting AI in the hopes of replacing human work or amplifying production. As Washington Post columnist Heather Long wrote Tuesday, the strike is “an early battle of well-paid workers against advanced automation.

For a decade, Elon Musk has championed the idea that one day Tesla cars will drive themselves as robotaxis. In the decade that Musk has promised driverless vehicles, competitors have made them. Alphabet -owned Waymo already operates a commercial robotaxi service in several U.S. cities, surpassing 100,000 paid rides per week as of August. Amazon -owned Zoox began testing rides for employees in February 2023 with ambitions to launch its own robotaxi service. Almost everyone else seems to want to deploy AI in some meaningful way but don't seem to know how. It's available on HP 's AI personal computers right now but hasn't really attracted a lot of interest yet — good for Club company Best Buy 's forward earnings. For some companies, companies like CVS , this is a no brainer. One that can build things or get things or just give you a cup of your coffee. I don't know what will happen to people who are doing this now.

A long road It's been a long and winding road for Waymo since its inception in 2009 as Google's self-driving car project. The robotaxi service now has about 700 autonomous vehicles on the road across its markets. That changed about a year ago , when Uber added Waymo vehicles to its app. In February, Waymo recalled 444 of its vehicles after two Waymo vehicles hit a towed pickup truck in Phoenix. Hong Kong CNN —Hyundai and General Motors (GM) have agreed to look for ways to work together on developing new vehicles, supply chains and technologies in an effort to cut costs and move more quickly. Global carmakers are under intense pressure to come up with new electric vehicle (EV) and battery technology because they face vehicle emissions regulations around the world. South Korea’s Hyundai and America’s GM (GM) said on Thursday they would collaborate on joint product development, manufacturing and future clean energy technologies. The non-binding framework agreement was signed by Hyundai Motor Executive Chair Euisun Chung and GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra. Including its affiliate Kia, Hyundai Motor is the world’s third-largest automaker by sales, according to Reuters, while GM is currently America’s largest carmaker, having retaken that title from Toyota in 2022.

Reuters —Cruise will offer its autonomous vehicles on Uber’s platform starting next year, the companies said on Thursday, as the General Motors-backed robotaxi firm attempts a comeback. The multi-year partnership will allow Uber riders to choose a trip using a Cruise autonomous vehicle, they said. Uber’s partnership with Cruise comes as Tesla CEO Elon Musk is set to unveil its delayed plans for a robotaxi product in October amid slowing demand for electric vehicles. Commercializing autonomous vehicles has been tougher than expected and taken longer than promised due to complex technology, soaring investments, tight regulatory scrutiny and federal investigations. Trips by self-driving vehicles on Uber’s platform rose six-fold in the June quarter year-on-year, helped by partnerships with companies including Waymo, as well as startup Waabi for freight services.

Behind the scenes, 5G infrastructure is powering live broadcasts worldwide and the moments spectators and athletes capture and post on social media. After the event, it became a hub for YouTubers and other content creators because of its gigabit-speed internet connectivity. In the lead-up to the Games, connectivity infrastructure was embedded in the London Underground light-rail network and the Westfield shopping center in Stratford. 5G technology wasn't adopted at a consumer level until 2019, and Japan's 5G-infrastructure rollout was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the 5G technology was fast enough that train riders could watch the opening ceremony on their personal devices.
