Wildfires and extreme heat have damaged olive harvests in Europe, leading to shortages of olive oil. To keep up with demand, olive oil is being imported from South America. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn the past couple of years, extreme weather, wildfires and droughts have damaged olive tree harvests to the point where Europe is now almost out of local supplies of olive oil. To keep up with demand, European companies are importing olive oil from South America, a necessity that the world's top producer noted. Oil prices ticked up in early trade on Wednesday, as markets focused on supply tightness heading into winter and a "soft landing" for the U.S. economy. Brent crude futures rose 33 cents, or 0.4%, to $94.29 a barrel by 0015 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures climbed 31 cents, or 0.3%, to $90.70. However, markets continued to worry about U.S. crude stockpiles at the key Cushing, Oklahoma, storage hub falling below minimum operating levels.

Oil prices are surging again, but the Strategic Petroleum Reserve remains near 40-year lows. Last year, the Biden administration drained 180 million barrels from the SPR as oil prices soared. Flooding the market with all that supply helped bring oil prices down — and helped cool inflation, which had shot up as well. But while it has ticked up slightly, the level remains near 40-year lows at about 350 million barrels. The stock market has started to feel the ripple effects from rising oil prices.

Bitcoin is poised to end August on a down beat despite the crypto industry scoring a milestone win on the regulation front. Bitcoin recently jumped 7% after a federal appeals court sided with Grayscale over the Securities and Exchange Commission in a key crypto ETF case. While crypto investors have a lot to cheer, it hasn't been reflected in prices, and bitcoin could remain rangebound throughout September. All eyes on Washington September kicks off with an anticipated update from the SEC on at least one spot bitcoin ETF application. On Thursday afternoon the agency delayed its decisions on bitcoin ETF applications from WisdomTree and Invesco.

Hiccup in soft landing story Why are we hitting this string of down days? There's a hiccup in the soft landing story. That's causing a speed bump for stocks, particularly tech stocks, which are underperforming this month and this quarter. And despite poor economic news out of China, the macroeconomic environment in the U.S. remains strong and still supportive of a soft landing. At 19.2 times forward earnings, the S & P 500 is still richly valued.

The chart below is meant to provide a high level view of the revenue exposure each of the 35 companies in our portfolio has to the world's second-largest economy. First, a couple caveats: Our energy exploration and production stocks Coterra Energy (CTRA) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) screen as having zero revenue exposure outside of the United States. Nvidia (NVDA) is another stock where the direct revenue exposure can be misleading. That makes the 60% revenue exposure to the Asia-Pacific region more concerning, even as mainland China realized organic sales growth during the quarter. As a result, total sales, services sales and wearables, home and accessories sales all set June quarter records in Greater China.

REUTERS/Kim Kyung-HoonSINGAPORE, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Asian stocks lost ground on Thursday, still hurting from China's slip into deflation, with investors particularly cautious ahead of a crucial U.S. inflation report that will likely influence the Federal Reserve's monetary policy path. The announcement of a U.S. ban on investments in sensitive technologies in the world's second-largest economy also weighed on sentiment. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) fell 0.33% and it looked set to log a second straight week of losses. China is the first G20 economy to report a year-on-year decline in consumer prices since Japan's last negative headline CPI reading in August 2021. Investors have also been unwilling to place major bets this week ahead of a U.S. inflation report due later on Thursday.

ChatGPT excelled at predicting a stock's price direction based on news sentiment. They found that while ChatGPT excelled at predicting a stock's direction based on news sentiment, it is not without limitations. They prompted ChatGPT to assign the following scores to headlines: "1" for good news, "0" for unknown and "-1" for bad news. The warning comes as the S&P 500 is currently in the midst of a bull market run, led by a rally around mega-cap tech stocks. Investors shouldn't be so quick to believe the bear has left the stock market, Morgan Stanley warned. But he said investors shouldn't think the bear market has ended just yet, pointing specifically to the outlook for earnings as a reason to remain cautious. "With the S & P 500 rally now crossing the 20% threshold, more are declaring the bear market officially over," he said in a note to clients Monday. The 20% threshold has emboldened some market participants to "declare the official end to the bear market," Wilson said.
