As a result, the iconic Herman Miller chairs popular during the pandemic are ending up in landfills. More than three years after the Covid pandemic sent employees home, office spaces in New York City are still only half occupied, the New York Times reported. As those deserted offices clear out, their tenants have had to decide what to do with the abandoned office furniture. Lior Rachmany, the founder of Dumbo Moving and Storage, told the Times his company has "never seen so many Herman Miller chairs." MillerKnoll, Inc., which owns the Herman Miller brand, told Insider in a statement that it expanded its furniture repurposing program in May.

Live Nation Entertainment announced new "transparent" pricing where it will display fees at the beginning of the transaction. While this has been on Biden's agenda for months, he hasn't addressed the grip Live Nation Entertainment has on the entertainment industry. Republican state Sen. Scott Wilk introduced a bill in early 2023 to ban exclusivity contracts in the ticketing industry. Ultimately, she said, it's up to the Department of Justice to investigate and potentially take action on Live Nation Entertainment. According to the New York Times, the DOJ opened an antitrust investigation into Live Nation Entertainment in late 2022.

For as long as I can remember, the safest place on Wall Street for job security was in tech. But according to one Wall Street billionaire, that sentiment won't hold true for much longer. As Insider's Paige Hagy reports, Griffin instead highlighted how programmers need to position themselves to provide the most value to companies in this post-ChatGPT world. In the before times (pre-ChatGPT), no one was really questioning the value programmers were adding. At least that's the take from Wall Street vet Marty Chavez.

related investing news Here's what analysts are saying about Apple's new Vision Pro headset The promise of Apple's new mixed-reality headset isn't really about the headset I got to take one for a test drive. The Vision Pro isn't large enough to fit glasses if you wear them. Even though most of the focus with Apple Vision is on the visuals, I was equally impressed by the audio. The Vision Pro has a pair of speakers that sit near your temples and provide a surround sound effect. But as someone who has tried just about every mainstream headset to date so far, I can tell you that Vision Pro feels like a $3,500 machine.

I slide into a cushy leather chair in this bustling shop next to a small flooring business. The hum of clippers echoes throughout the room. A framed photo of former President Barack Obama hangs on a wall, and the TV is tuned to highlights from a recent Golden State Warriors basketball game. But the volume is turned down low, and instead I hear snippets of conversations — quick descriptions of desired cuts, followed by comfortable banter about politics (Donald Trump running for president — again!) career scoring record) and life (a 20-something moving in with his girlfriend).

LET’S BE FRANK: Old-school golf trips were a handy way to ditch the spouse and fritter away a week with like-minded monomaniacs. The following spots offer course corrections that let both golfers and their better halves pursue their own form of fun, be it a birdie, an eagle, a catamaran cruise or a walk in a “meditation labyrinth.”1. George Mason University funded a series of plush trips for Supreme Court justices in recent years. Per The Times, the law school sent justices on trips to European tourist spots as part of teaching programs. Gorsuch was asked to help pick which Italian city would host his teaching trip. Insider sought further comment from the law school and the court.

The $356 billion company said on Friday that sales grew 4% year-over-year to $20 billion in the three months ended March 31. That growth was led by a 10% price hike for the second consecutive quarter, while also growing market share in the United States. P&G warned of higher commodities and packaging costs, as well as wage inflation. P&G is proving that the cushy Charmin double roll is irreplaceable. WASHINGTON — Two top progressive lawmakers questioned whether Silicon Valley Bank offered its largest depositors unusually cushy treatment, one month after the institution collapsed and sparked broader damage to the banking system. "Silicon Valley Bank's unusually cozy relationship with its clients increased the threat of contagion when the bank went under," Warren said in a statement. "The American people deserve to know how these mutual backscratching arrangements developed, who benefitted from them, and what role they played in Silicon Valley Bank's failure." Over 95% of the bank's deposits were uninsured as of December, which threatened companies' ability to make payroll after the bank failed. Warren and Ocasio-Cortez asked the depositors to provide details on any special treatment they received from SVB by April 24.
She started the business as a side hustle but took it full time when she was laid off in February. She described how she scaled the business after losing her job and offered advice for entrepreneurs. A former Twitter executive said she's taking a vacation just weeks after she was laid off. Esther Crawford was one of Elon Musk's top lieutenants and went viral for sleeping at the office. The Twitter executive worked at the company for over two years after it acquired her startup, Squad, in 2020, according to her LinkedIn page. Crawford isn't the only former Twitter executive to take off on vacation after the widespread layoffs. Still, it's unclear whether Twitter's severance pay is as cushy as that of other tech companies for all those laid off.
Things have been difficult for her family, she says, but one thing she isn’t worried about: a midlife crisis, looming just over the horizon. One of our questions was about whether they had experienced a midlife crisis and how they would define the term. Many people said they felt they couldn’t be having a midlife crisis, because there was no bourgeois numbness to rebel against. “Who has midlife crisis money?”The traditional midlife crisis, as presented in popular culture, at least, unfolds amid suburban ennui. We just increase our Lexapro.”Was the midlife crisis ever even real?
Doug Leone compared AI to mobile devices and the internet in terms of technological impact. Great companies often emerge in tough times, and easy money can be bad for founders, he said. Leone is a legendary venture capitalist who led Sequoia Capital for over 25 years. (Leone said he looks for founders, partners, and employees who are seen by others as insufferable, belligerent, and bad listeners.) "What you shouldn't do and say: 'There's money in venture, I want a cushy life, I want to go into venture.'
It's almost impossible to imagine a time when air travel was pleasant, much less enjoyable. Lost baggage, overbooked flights, outdated equipment, hidden fees, and disorganized staffing have fliers at their wits' end; consumer complaints about airline service have risen by 300% from pre-pandemic levels. Many of these measures had been put in place to improve safety following some rattling accidents in the early days of commercial air travel. So in 1978, at the urging of the economist and "inflation czar" Alfred Kahn, President Jimmy Carter enacted the Airline Deregulation Act. He added that "airline service, by any standard, has become unacceptable."

Demand for tech workers at non-tech companies has reportedly outstripped demand at tech firms. The findings come as tech companies continue to cut budgets and lay off workers by the thousands. Tech jobs, highly sought after for their high pay and cushy benefits, seem less secure than ever as nearly every major tech company has cut headcounts and slashed budgets in the past six months. The bloodbath shows no sign of slowing down: Nearly 95,000 tech workers have been laid off in the first few weeks of 2023, according to layoff tracker layoffs.fyi. A silver lining for tech workers?

I recently traveled by train in business class in two countries to see how they compared: a Via Rail train in Canada and a Trenitalia train in Italy. The author rides in business class on trains in Canada (L) and Italy (R). Later that week, I took a 6-hour Via Rail business-class ride in Canada from Toronto to Montréal. Two months later, I took a 4-hour Trenitalia business-class ride in Italy from Venice to Rome during a two-week train trip through Europe. So, I decided to compare my train trips in Canada and Italy to figure out which country offered the best business-class experience.
Here's what I come up with when I do that for the stock market and broader economy in 2023. There are a lot more pros than cons. That's a cushy seat on the sidelines and it's hard to get those people back into the equities market. But we have so many strong companies that the layoffs simply haven't been significant.
