Last week's decline after the hot consumer price index report pushed off the perceived moment of a Fed truce took the S & P 500 below the 3,900 area bulls were hoping would hold. The 2-year Treasury yield pushing 4% is rippling across asset classes, reflecting the combined inflation backdrop and anticipated Fed response. Some equity-valuation models tied strictly to this yield suggest the S & P 500 forward price-earnings "should" be more like 13x-14x rather than the current 16.5x. It's a crude instrument for gauging fair value but has largely been in tune with valuation trends in recent years.
That’s essentially unchanged from last month’s NBC News poll, which had Republicans ahead by 2 points, 47%-45%, well within that poll’s margin of error. In this new poll, Democrats enjoy advantages among Black voters (77%-8%), those in the age group 18-34 (57%-33%), whites with college degrees (58%-38%), women (53%-40%) and Latinos (46%-42%). That’s essentially unchanged from August, when 68% of Republicans and 66% of Democrats expressed high interest. By comparison, Biden’s favorability score in the new NBC News poll is 42% positive, 47% (-5). And on the topic of abortion, 61% of voters say they disapprove the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in June overturning Roe v. Wade, compared with 37% who approve.

The continued decline in gas prices was reflected by a 4.2% dropfor the month on spending at gas stationsBacking out this volatile component, sales rose by 0.8% for the month. The retail report suggests that the tailwind of lower gas prices was a key factor helping Americans cope last month. "Gas prices are certainly a challenge for consumers. If we saw another spike in gas prices then we would expect to see weaker spending in a lot of these other retail sales categories."
