Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, appeared to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in people with Type 2 diabetes, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia. Another study, published in August, found that semaglutide appeared to cut the risk of dementia in people with Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a risk factor for dementia and Alzheimer’s. The study found that patients prescribed semaglutide had a significantly lower risk for Alzheimer’s disease than those who had taken one of the seven other diabetes drugs. The biggest difference was seen when comparing patients who took semaglutide to those who took insulin: Semaglutide patients had a 70% lower risk of Alzheimer’s, the study found.

CNN —There was plenty for fans to get their teeth stuck into in Week 7 of the 2024 NFL season. They are the only remaining undefeated team in the NFL after overcoming their recent rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, on Sunday. All-in-all, after seven weeks of the NFL season, the AFC is heating up with multiple potential superpowers really kicking into gear. And things went from bad to worse on Sunday when starting quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered a season-ending injury. On Monday, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanksi confirmed that Watson had suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, ending the quarterback’s season.

As Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance campaigns across the country, his wife, Usha Vance, has been a near-constant presence by his side. Reporters huddled under the wing of JD Vance’s campaign plane often get a glimpse of a book's dust cover as Usha Vance climbs the towable stairs or stands on the tarmac. Though she’s a fixture on the campaign trail, Vance has not occupied a forward-facing public role like other political spouses. As JD Vance has noted on the campaign trail, she left her corporate law firm following the senator’s nomination for vice president in July. Usha Vance, an undergraduate student of history at Yale, went on to study early-modern history at the University of Cambridge.

First openly transgender lawyer to argue at Supreme Court
  + stars: | 2024-10-21 | by ( ) www.nbcnews.com   time to read: +4 min
An American Civil Liberties Union lawyer will make history in December as the first openly transgender attorney to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court, opposing Tennessee’s Republican-backed law banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors. The Supreme Court on Monday ordered that the argument time for the ban’s challengers be divided between the Justice Department and attorneys representing the original plaintiffs who sued the state. Several plaintiffs — including two transgender boys, a transgender girl and their parents — sued in Tennessee to defend the treatments they have said improved their happiness and wellbeing. The Supreme Court has confronted several cases in the past decade implicating LGBTQ rights. In 2020, it ruled that a landmark federal law forbidding workplace discrimination protects gay and transgender employees.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson was carted off the field with an Achilles injury during the second quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals. He was running a quarterback draw when his right leg appeared to buckle and he hit the ground. He entered Sunday ranked 31st and last among all QBs in quarterback rating. Entering Sunday, the Browns’ passing offense was last in yards per game, yards per attempt and had suffered more sacks than any other team. Even if the Browns were to release Watson after this season, they would still owe him $92 million.

By Zack Rosenblatt, Mike DeFabo and Lauren MerolaPittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson posted a strong stat line Sunday against the New York Jets at Acrisure Stadium, in part thanks to star wide receiver George Pickens. Russell Wilson passes first testWhen Tomlin pivoted, sitting Fields in favor for a healthy Wilson, the decision was sure to have a microscope on it. Wilson found his rhythm as the game went on, showing great chemistry with George Pickens. Wilson and the Steelers capitalized on the miscue, when the QB hit Pickens for a touchdown to cap a four-play, 54-yard drive. That set the stage for Wilson to sneak the ball in, giving the Steelers an eight-point lead.

The Food and Drug Administration recently approved a heart stent made specifically for infants and young children, a device that could help kids born with certain congenital heart defects avoid a series of open heart operations over their childhoods. In some cases, those defects are treated with stents, which prop open blood vessels, ensuring that blood can properly flow through them. “You can imagine that is less than ideal — they’re too big.”This means that as the child grows older and their blood vessels get bigger, stents have to be replaced, often with open heart surgery, Zahn said. “It’s not unusual to have kids who are going into middle school who’ve had four or five or even six open heart surgeries,” he said. Patients are usually able to go home about a day later, compared with around seven days for open heart surgery, including some days in the ICU.

But Trump’s comments on “paper ballots” have puzzled voting experts and election officials – because almost all voters nationwide already use paper ballots. Facts First: Trump’s insistence that the US switch to “paper ballots” is nonsensical. He has mentioned the “paper ballots” claim dozens of times this year alone. And ideally, we go to paper ballots, same-day voting, proof of citizenship – very big – and voter ID.”In an interview last month, Trump said one way to “solve this problem” of mass fraud was to “go to paper ballots.” At a rally in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, he said, “we want to go to paper ballots.” And he said, “we want paper ballots,” in Montezuma Pass, Arizona. For everyone else, there are paper trails that can be checked during a post-election audit or recount.

CNN —Aryna Sabalenka secured her third straight Wuhan Open title with a hard-fought victory over Zheng Qinwen on Sunday. In a rematch of this year’s Australian Open final, the world No. 2 defeated home favorite Zheng 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to pick up her second WTA 1000 title of the season and the seventh of her career. Sabalenka, the first player to win the Wuhan Open three times, extends her unbeaten run at the tournament to 17-0 while improving to 4-0 in her head-to-head against Zheng. “I felt like I just lost a little bit of focus and I let her come back in the match,” Sabalenka said, per the WTA.

Are we living through another Lamar Jackson MVP season? The Bears defense has also been phenomenal and will keep them in games even when Williams will inevitably struggle, as all rookies do. Full disclosure: One of my bold predictions entering the season was that Rattler would wind up taking Derek Carr’s job this season. The bigger concern is the Saints’ defense, which surrendered 600 yards and 50 points and allowed the Bucs to convert 6 of 10 third downs. It doesn’t matter who plays quarterback — the Saints defense has to put up some resistance.

He then decided to stay put for Hurricane Milton, posting about his prep and decision to ride out the latest storm. But the trend was a reminder of how social media can make dangerous situations worse. TikTok also directed users who watched or searched for Hurricane Milton content to information from the US Federal Emergency Management Agency. But social media users (myself absolutely included) also incentivize this kind of creator behavior, by scrolling and watching. Many of the creators who shared content from the heart of the storm racked up thousands of likes and comments.

Quarterbacks Jayden Daniels versus Lamar Jackson should be pure fireworks, but it's far from the only intriguing matchup this weekend. Henry has scored in all five games this season while rushing for a league-high 572 yards. Considering down and distance, Henry has rushed for 229 yards more than expected, according to advanced NFL stats. Kirk Cousins, meanwhile, is fifth in passing yards per game despite a slow start for Atlanta’s offense. The Lions are conceding 349.0 yards per game, 11th-worst in the NFL.
