BRUSSELS, Sept 20 (Reuters) - European Union's second-top court on Wednesday backed an EU competition regulator's decision against a 700-million-euro ($748 million) Belgian tax scheme for 55 multinationals, in a major win for EU antitrust chief's crackdown on sweetheart tax deals. The Luxembourg-based General Court had in 2019 annulled Margrethe Vestager's decision after Belgium and about 30 of the companies challenged it. Beneficiaries of the Belgian scheme that dated from 2005 included U.S. manufacturer Magnetrol, oil company BP (BP.L), chemical producer BASF (BASFn.DE), Wabco, Cellio, Atlas Copco (ATCOa.ST) and Belgacom, now Proximus (PROX.BR) . The EU Court of Justice, Europe's top court, in 2021 however sided with the EU competition enforcer and referred the case back to the lower tribunal. Belgium can still appeal to the EU Court of Justice.

"We're pressing China to give full access, and we are asking countries to raise it during their bilateral meetings — to urge Beijing to co-operate," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told the newspaper. The WHO chief's comments come as health authorities and pharmaceutical companies across the world have been racing to update vaccines to combat newer emerging coronavirus variants. Ghebreyesus has for long been pressing China to share its information about the origins of COVID-19, saying that until that happened all hypotheses remained on the table. The virus was first identified in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019, with many suspecting it spread in a live animal market before fanning out around the world and killing nearly 7 million people. The United States also offers tax credits of up to $7,500 for buyers of new electric cars, and several more for manufacturers of EVs and EV components. And each government views the support they provide as merely also doing "whatever it takes" to keep their own industries competitive. The mere threat of a probe into China's subsidies might actually be enough to slow the pace of imports from China while allowing sales of European cars to pick up further. Shares of major European car producers have heavily lagged U.S. and China EV rivalsIn that way, the EU Commissioner will have provided a valuable service to Europe's manufacturers without needing to actually dig too deeply into China's subsidy practices. Oil producer group OPEC on Thursday sharply criticized the IEA's forecast that demand for fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas will peak before the end of the decade, describing such a narrative as "extremely risky," "impractical" and "ideologically driven." The IEA, the world's leading energy watchdog, said Tuesday that the world was now at the "beginning of the end" of the fossil fuel era. His assessment is based off of the IEA's World Energy Outlook, an influential report which is due out in October. OPEC, a multinational group of mainly Middle Eastern and African nations, published a statement Thursday to outline its objections to the IEA chief's forecast. OPEC said that previous predictions of peak fossil fuel demand had failed to materialize.

NEW DELHI (AP) — U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday urged the Group of 20 top economic powers, which are responsible for more than 80% of the emissions that cause global warming, to use their weekend summit to send a strong message on climate change. Climate ministers of the G20 nations ended their last meeting for the year in July without resolving major disagreements on climate policies. Guterres called on big emitters to make additional efforts to cut emissions and rich countries to meet the climate finance commitments made already. Energy analysts say its crucial that G20 leaders act on the U.N. chief's suggestions. And have it now,” said Madhura Joshi, energy analyst at the climate think tank E3G.

Elon Musk's recent comments insinuating that the real-time messaging service formerly known as Twitter could file a defamation lawsuit against the Anti-Defamation League is merely a "threat of a frivolous lawsuit," the nonprofit's CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said Tuesday. Musk said X, the company formerly known as Twitter, would have "no choice but to file a defamation lawsuit" if the ADL continues to allegedly pressure advertisers. X's attorneys alleged that the CCDH's studies were based upon "flawed methodologies" and caused advertisers to stop running promotional campaigns on the messaging service, thus damaging X's business. For instance, Nick Fuentes, a far-right livestreamer who has previously made antisemitic comments, urged his viewers to contribute to the #BanTheADL campaign. Watch: X Corp. The U.S. central bank's vice chair, whose term is four years, also traditionally serves as the Fed chief's go-to official on policy communications, underscoring key messages and clarifying potential misinterpretations. An Amazon shareholder lawsuit says the company snubbed SpaceX for valuable satellite launch contracts because of Jeff Bezos' personal rivalry with Elon Musk , who has taunted his fellow billionaire's space ambitions for years. Last year, Amazon announced what it called the biggest rocket deal in the commercial space industry's history, signing launch contracts with United Launch Alliance (ULA), Arianespace, and Bezos' Blue Origin. Blue Origin has yet to provide a statement in response to CNBC's request for comment on the lawsuit. In January 2022, the suit says Bezos' team told the Amazon audit committee that two contracts had been fully negotiated with Blue Origin and ULA. "Bezos, it must be assumed, could not swallow his pride to seek his bitter rival's help to launch Amazon's satellites," the suit adds.

The incident - which happened as Luis Rubiales handed the women's team gold medals after they beat England 1-0 in the final on Sunday - sparked outrage within and outside Spain, with many, including ministers, demanding Rubiales' resignation. "We've seen his apology and that's not enough, he must be much clearer and convincing in apologising," Sanchez told a news conference. Sanchez said the federation was not part of the Spanish government, which lacked the power to appoint or fire the federation's president. As criticism mounted, Rubiales issued a video apology late on Monday, after initially calling critics "idiots". "Surely I was wrong, I have to admit," Rubiales said in the video statement sent by the federation.
