U.S. Bankruptcy Judge David R. Jones resigned from the Southern District of Texas bench on Sunday. Photo: reuters tv/ReutersJudge David R. Jones became the nation’s leading bankruptcy judge by making his court an attractive place for troubled businesses to face their creditors. His sudden departure over a previously undisclosed romantic relationship taints that legacy. Jones turned his Houston courtroom into the top landing spot for big bankruptcies over the past decade by appealing to corporate management teams and their high-priced advisers. He handled more major corporate bankruptcies than any other judge in recent years, including department stores JCPenney and Neiman Marcus and oil-and-gas driller Chesapeake Energy .

Rite Aid filed plans to close 154 stores on Monday as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Rite Aid is the smallest of the three major drugstore chains, well behind CVS and Walgreens. Rite Aid was expected to close stores as part of its bankruptcy. Rite Aid told Insider that it considers a variety of factors when deciding to close a store, "including business strategy, lease and rent considerations, local business conditions and viability, and store performance." "We will also strive to transfer associates to other Rite Aid locations where possible," the company said.

Since then, Chesapeake has been shedding oil-producing assets to focus on its competence in natural gas. U.S. natural gas prices have been sluggish in recent months, as oversupply and warmer weather erode producers' profitability. Some analysts expect prices to go up in the next few months, as a pick-up in U.S. natural gas exports creates more domestic scarcity.

Tropical storm Ophelia approaches North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, U.S. in this image from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) GOES-East weather satellite, September 22, 2023. In Virginia, Governor Glenn Youngkin declared a state of emergency in anticipation of the storm, dubbed Ophelia, which is expected to hit the state on Friday evening. Tropical storm warnings are in effect for much of the area, along with storm surge warnings, the National Weather Service said. Late Friday, the agency also issued a hurricane watch for parts of Eastern North Carolina, saying that Air Force Reserve hurricane hunters had found that Ophelia had strengthened. In addition to life-threatening storm surges along the coast, Ophelia could spur flooding from North Carolina to New Jersey through Sunday, the National Weather Service said.

America’s largest renewable power company is among several U.S. energy and utility companies, including Exxon and Southern Company, that continue to promote big, concentrated bets on company stock in worker retirement plans. Nearly 50% of the investments in NextEra’s employee-funded 401(k) retirement plan are in company stock, the highest among all 30 companies in the S&P 500 Utilities Sector (.SPLRCU). NextEra declined to comment on its use of company stock in employee 401(k) plans. "If we saw a concentration of more than 20% in a single company stock, we would definitely tell them it's a big risk." `Keith Rasmussen, a retired geologist, said he still feels the financial repercussions of holding big bets on company stock in his retirement plans.

The Chesapeake cowboys rode into St. Michael’s, Md., on a steamy Sunday in August, and the air smelled like crab seasoning and diesel exhaust, with a dash of light beer and lime. A couple thousand spectators had gathered in the Colonial-era tourist town on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, about 80 miles east of Washington, D.C., to watch the cowboys square off in a competition unique to the Chesapeake Bay: boat docking. They stood elbow to elbow on a lighthouse deck. A few brave onlookers balanced, precariously, atop dock pilings without spilling their drinks. played a love song to “long-neck, ice- cold beer.”“It’s redneck like NASCAR, just on the water,” one competitor, Ronnie Reiss, known as “Reissy Cup,” said on his boat, the May Worm.

REUTERS/Erin Scott/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 24 (Reuters) - Dollar Tree (DLTR.O) forecast annual profit largely below estimates on Thursday, owing to higher costs and a shift in spending towards lower-margin consumables. Chief Financial Officer Jeff Davis said the profit outlook was also impacted by unfavorable shrink trends and higher diesel fuel prices. Dollar Tree, like retailers Target (TGT.N) and Macy's (M.N), has been plagued by a rise in retail shrink, where inventory is lost, damaged, or stolen. Dollar Tree said it now expects to earn in the range of $5.78 to $6.08 per share in fiscal 2023, compared with its prior outlook of between $5.73 and $6.13.

More than 200 ships are stuck in a traffic jam outside the Panama Canal. Over 200 ships are currently stuck in a major traffic jam on either side of the Panama Canal, with some ships trapped for more than three weeks waiting to get through, according to data from project44 reviewed by Insider. The ships are stuck due to an unprecedented drought taking hold in Panama right now, the Wall Street Journal reported. The traffic jam is causing a slowdown in consumer goods delivery and is already stoking concerns over the holiday supply chain. But the stuck ships should come as no surprise; it's the third year in a row that the world has marveled at an unfortunate logjam of maritime traffic.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File PhotoAug 14 (Reuters) - U.S. natural gas producer Chesapeake Energy (CHK.O) said on Monday it would sell its remaining Eagle Ford assets to SilverBow Resources (SBOW.N) for $700 million, completing its exit from the south Texas basin. Chesapeake said last year it viewed the Eagle Ford acreage as no longer core to its strategy and would focus on the gas-rich Marcellus and Haynesville shale formations. The Oklahoma City-based energy producer also faced pressure from activist investment firm Kimmeridge Energy Management, which has urged a shift toward solely natural gas production. SilverBow said the deal, expected to close by the end of this year, would make it the largest public pure-play Eagle Ford operator and would immediately add to key financial and operating metrics. The deal consists of a $650 million upfront cash payment due at closing and an additional $50 million deferred cash payment 12 months after close.

Researchers hoped to find evidence of a healthy new generation of ospreys when they checked 84 nests of the fish-eating bird in mid-June at Mobjack Bay, an inlet at the southern end of the Chesapeake Bay. It was the lowest reproductive number in more than 50 years of monitoring the local population of the raptor, according to scientists at the College of William & Mary. And they said it represented the latest evidence in a long-term decline in breeding success due to the bay-wide depletion of the bird’s favorite food — Atlantic menhaden. The fish are nutrient-rich, a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids; they consume smaller organisms like plankton and they filter huge quantities of ocean water. But they are also a mainstay of the commercial fishing industry, caught in mass quantities to be processed into bait for crabs and lobsters, and in greater volume for so-called reduction fisheries, in which they are ground up and turned into products including fish oil and fish meal.

A teenager from Chesapeake, Va., died after he was buried in several feet of sand on Saturday inside a hole that had been dug in a back-dune area at Cape Hatteras National Seashore in North Carolina, officials said. The 17-year-old boy, whose identity had not been released by the authorities, was trapped underground when sand from the adjacent dune collapsed into the hole, the National Park Service said in a statement. The back-dune area where he was caught was not visible from the beachfront, the service said. The hole was about a tenth of a mile east of an off-road vehicle ramp in Frisco, N.C., a community on Hatteras Island. “Rangers worked with family members to extract the teen while simultaneously performing CPR,” the service said in a statement.

The rodents often carry pathogens and parasites that can contaminate water supplies and potentially spread to humans. Geothermal has the worst of both worlds—the exploratory risk of oil and gas and the low-return profile of solar and wind. What is in it for the energy industry? Chevron , which divested its geothermal business in 2017, is dipping its toes back in through pilot projects or early stage exploration in California, Japan and Indonesia. Others exploring geothermal include BP, Shell, Continental Resources, Chesapeake Energy and Murphy Oil.
