CNN —Angry residents booed and threw eggs at Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia as they visited the Valencia region, where more than 200 people have died in devastating floods. After they posed for a photo, the crowd began hurling insults at the king, Mazon and Sanchez. The Royal Family’s social media channel released video in the aftermath of the protest, showing the king and queen embracing distraught residents. One man fell weeping into the king’s arms and in another shot, the King is seen hugging two crying women. The anger appeared largely directed at Sanchez and Mazon, who left early even as the king insisted on staying on despite the chaos.

Scientists called Campeche an archaeological “blank spot” in the Maya Lowlands, an area spanning what is now Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala and southeastern Mexico, and which the Maya inhabited from about 1000 BC to AD 1500. Like other large capital cities from Maya sites, Valeriana had a reservoir, a ball court, temple pyramids and a broad road connecting enclosed plazas. In total, the researchers identified 6,764 structures in Valeriana and in other rural and urban settlements of varying sizes. In the north, Maya sites such as Chichén Itzá are highly visible. Morales-Aguilar’s work on Maya settlements in Guatemala aligns closely with the new findings, he told CNN in an email.

An SM-3 Block 1B interceptor missile is launched from the guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Erie during a test in the Pacific. CNN —At least 51 people have died in flash floods in southeastern Spain, the regional government of Valencia said on Wednesday. Some locations in southern and eastern Spain received up to 12 inches of rain in just a few hours on Tuesday. The Valencia area averages 77 millimeters (3.03 inches) of rain for the entire month of October. Chiva, just east of Valencia, received 320 millimeters (12.6 inches) of rain in just over four hours, according to the European Severe Weather Database.
