I want my daughter to experience financial discomfortAbout 20 years ago, I met my wife, another Baha'i from Iran. I believe wealth is only commendable if earnedMost importantly, I want my daughters to work. While I plan to leave my daughters a small inheritance to ensure their financial security, I won't leave them enough money that they don't need to work. I want my children to have enough money to house themselves, get an education, and meet their basic needs. Beyond that, I believe money can corrupt if it's given rather than earned.

But before my second was born, my family moved to rural New Hampshire for my husband's job. The kids' school (a town over) is 20 minutes from home, while the grocery store is 25. When the kids inevitably break a bone during their adventures, we need to drive 45 minutes to the hospital. My life feels more relaxed hereAfter three years of living in that town, going even more rural felt like an easy choice. My kids didn't choose to live in the middle of nowhere, and I don't want it to hold them back.

He was giving me six months to live, and that was "pushing it," in his words. A doctor told me I needed aggressive treatment immediatelyAt first, the emotions didn't hit me. I was the one who had just been given six months to live. The doctor told me we didn't have time for that; we needed to start aggressive treatments immediately. When the first doctor told me I had six months to live, I knew I would make it to seven.

I'll be the same age when my baby arrives as my grandmother was when I was born. Having a baby during COVID lockdown was traumaticI was very confident in our decision to delay having a baby. We had been through so much together, but nothing could have prepared us for having a baby. I'm building my own happinessAfter that, it took us years to feel ready for another baby. Getting the new house ready is difficult, because you're designing for something you haven't experienced.

In my early 30s, I was the caregiver for my wife, who was dealing with chronic pain and other health issues. It was all-encompassing and there wasn't a lot of time to have outside social interactions. Luckily, you don't need to see your friends every day to reap the benefits of social interactions. Maybe you open the door to a deeper relationship, but even if you don't, you'll feel better. Over time, you're going to connect with people and naturally become vulnerable unless you're really fighting it.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with George Vukasin Jr., president and CEO of Peerless Coffee and Tea. My dad wanted to become an FBI agent and put away bad guys, but he had no choice. In fact, they encouraged me and my two sisters to get professional experience outside the family business. Running a family business is complicated enough without more people involved. None of the kids seem to have an interest in joining the family business.

Last year, I started looking for ways to make more money from my retirement savings. The so-called investment company asked me to take out a line of credit. AdvertisementI trusted the big bank that the scammers usedStill, the so-called investment company called me, asking for more money. I never would have transferred money to a small bank or international establishment, but if you can't trust them, who can you trust? We need to be able to trust the government and major institutions like Bank of America to stop this fraud.

Jeanette Batchelor-Young had been tracing her roots for years when she received a message that would change what she knew about her origin story. There were still so many blanks in her family history: Mrs. Batchelor-Young had lived with her father briefly until his death and then she was adopted. Turns out there has been a stop — possibly, a very consequential stop — in Tulsa, Okla., in the 1920s. Mrs. Batchelor-Young, 64, learned she might be a relative of one of the victims of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Her DNA matched that of remains exhumed from a local cemetery as part of the city’s effort to identify the victims of the massacre through living relatives.

This type of jaw pain was debilitating, but I hadn't learned anything about treating it in dental school. AdvertisementSince then, I've learned a lot about jaw health — including that seemingly harmless things can really impact your jaw. Here are five common things you should avoid if you want to foster good jaw health in yourself and your kids. Chewing on gum or other items is like doing that for your jaw and can lead to overuse injuries. Jaw health and tongue position can play a huge role in overall health.

But these days, we're seeing parents bestow names typically given to girls on their sons. Parents who choose these names think it's better to grow into an adult-sounding name than outgrow a baby-ish name. Names that end in "ai" are easily pronounced in many languages, including indigenous languages, European languages, Japanese, and African languages. But now we're seeing parents embrace that names can be girly but still strong. We're seeing a rise in long, elaborate names but also in shorter, cutesy names for girls.

Read previewThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Marlana Hodgins and her son, Trevor. After our friend's incident he brought home his CPR dummies and taught me and our three kids how to do CPR in our living room. I had been CPR certified as a teen, but my kids — who are now 12, 14 and 16 — were learning for the first time. I never imagined that my middle son, Trevor, would soon be using his skills to save a life right in our home. Later, in the hospital, doctors and nurses said the efficient CPR that Trevor delivered likely saved J.J.'s life.

No one knows more about losing weight than a fat person. Then, I lost over 200 pounds and realized that we need more compassion and nuance when it comes to talking about weight. I was super strict, and over the next 14 months I lost 200 pounds. I can love my (still fat) body while also making it as healthy as possible, which might involve losing weight.
