With NASA astronauts docked at the International Space Station far longer than planned, the agency's leadership on Wednesday acknowledged potential alternatives to Boeing's Starliner for returning the crew to Earth. Still, the Boeing's spacecraft remains the primary option for returning crew, officials said. Starliner has now been in space 36 days and counting as the agency and Boeing perform additional testing in New Mexico before clearing the spacecraft to return. The mission is the first time Starliner is carrying people, flying NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams. "[But] there's really been no discussion with sending another Dragon to rescue the Starliner crew," Stich added later.

CNN —French cyclist Julien Bernard has offered a playful apology after he was fined for stopping to kiss his wife on Friday during a stage of the Tour de France. At one point, Bernard stopped briefly to kiss his wife, who was holding their child in her arms, as others on the roadside converged on them before parting to let Bernard through again. “I’d been waiting for this moment since the route was announced last October,” he told local newspaper Le Bien Public. Danish cyclist Magnus Cort replied to Bernard’s post on X with a video of himself kissing his wife by the roadside and quipped: “What a joke. “Oh no, no, no.”Bernard eventually finished 61st on the stage, 3:11 behind stage winner Remco Evenepoel.

Who Was Harriet Tubman? A Historian Sifts the Clues.

“Where others saw shut doors and unscalable brick walls, she dreamed into being tunnels and ladders,” the historian Tiya Miles writes in “Night Flyer,” a short biography of Tubman that is the first in a new series, called Significations and edited by Henry Louis Gates Jr., about notable Black figures. For decades after her death in 1913, Tubman’s extraordinary life was mostly relegated to books for children and young adults. Thorough, probing biographies by the historians Catherine Clinton and Kate Clifford Larson were published two decades ago. More recently, Tubman was the subject of a Hollywood biopic and “She Came to Slay,” an illustrated volume by the historian Erica Armstrong Dunbar, featuring a drawing of a pistol-toting Tubman on the cover. Perhaps inevitably, all the pop-cultural attention has been double-edged, commemorating Tubman’s formidable accomplishments while also making it harder to discern who she actually was.

The Chang'e-6 probe being successfully launched from China's Wenchang Spaceport in Wenchang, Hainan Province, China, on May 3, 2024. China's Chang'e-6 lunar probe returned to Earth on Tuesday, bringing back the first-ever samples from the unexplored far side of the moon. Chang'e-6 returned to Earth with soil collected from the South Pole-Aitken Basin — a massive crater in the lunar hemisphere that always faces away from Earth. In total, Chang'e-6 mission took 53 days from its May 3 departure from the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan, an island off China's south coast. The far side of the moon was first captured in images in 1959 by the Soviet Luna 3 spacecraft.

Pipeline operator Williams Companies offers a way for investors to play rising natural gas prices as demand grows due to the transition away from coal, according to the research firm Argus. "Our upgrade largely reflects our more bullish stance on natural gas prices," analyst Bill Selesky told clients in a research note Thursday. Demand for natural gas should rise due to hot weather conditions and the transition from coal to gas, while supply is constrained and inventories are low, the analyst said. The pipeline operator has rallied as natural gas prices have bounced back 70% over the past two months. "The power-hungry world we live in is rapidly turning to natural gas to generate this power," Armstrong said.

The task force suggested that extensive and intensive behavioral interventions are the best way to help a child get to a healthy weight. A high BMI for a child is defined a little differently than it is for adults, although both use height and weight to estimate mass. Nearly 20% of children in the US have what’s considered a high BMI. The task force gives its guidelines letter grades based on the most up-to-date science. Under the Affordable Care Act, private insurers must cover preventive services that get a grade of A or B; the new child obesity recommendations got a B grade.

Representative Kelly Armstrong won the Republican nomination for governor of North Dakota, The Associated Press said on Tuesday, defeating the state’s lieutenant governor, Tammy Miller, and positioning himself as the strong favorite in the general election. The primary featured two Republicans who are well known in the state and whose platforms shared many similarities. Mr. Armstrong, a lawyer and a former state Republican Party chairman, was elected to Congress in 2018 from North Dakota’s lone House district. Ms. Miller, an accountant and businesswoman, was appointed as lieutenant governor last year after working as Gov. After failing to gain traction in the Republican presidential primary, he announced in January that he would not seek another four years as governor.

Mr. Brown will face Jeff Gunter, a wealthy dermatologist who was Mr. Trump’s ambassador to Iceland, as well as Jim Marchant, who has supported Mr. Trump’s lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him, and a number of other minor candidates. For nearly four years, Republicans have delved into the darkest corners of Hunter Biden’s life, seeking to tie his troubles to his father, President Biden. But as the younger Biden stands trial in Delaware on gun charges, the case’s glaring political contradictions have rendered the G.O.P. It stands to reason: The baseless claim that the Biden Justice Department is running a political persecution of Mr. Trump is somewhat undermined by the department’s prosecution of the president’s son. So beyond the professional provocateurs in Washington and the right-wing media, Republicans have decided to say as little as possible. “I wouldn’t read too much into a lot of people not talking about it right now,” cautioned Representative Kelly Armstrong, Republican of North Dakota, and a leader of the House investigation of Hunter Biden.

The testimony of three university presidents before the House Education and the Workforce Committee in December has led to intense public scrutiny. Claudine Gay, Harvard’s president, gave similarly vague responses and faced backlash for weeks, culminating in her resignation in January. Lawyers who prepare clients to testify before Congress said that while there are risks to not appearing, it is always an option. And there are opportunities in negotiations with the committee that occur beforehand to avoid testimony that is likely to be disastrous. Failing to appear before a congressional committee voluntarily risks that lawmakers will demand your presence with a subpoena.

CNN —A county redistricting plan in Texas that a Donald Trump-appointed judge deemed “a clear violation” of the Voting Rights Act is back before a notoriously conservative appeals court. After the 2021 Census, the Republican-led county commission broke up that district, locking in four majority-white districts instead. Their opponents argue that Congress did not intend for multiple “classes” of minorities to be considered together when assessing a map’s Voting Rights Act compliance. Black and Latino voices ‘extinguished,’ judge saysThe 2021 map split up the long-established Precinct 3, spreading those minority voters across the four total commission precincts. “It would be devastating for minority voters as devastating as it was for Galveston’s Black and Latino voters.”
