AdvertisementPresident Joe Biden said that he hopes Donald Trump "rethinks" imposing tariffs on Mexico and Canada. President Joe Biden on Thursday expressed hope that President-elect Donald Trump would back down on his plan to impose tariffs on two of the US' closest allies. "I hope he rethinks it, I think it is a counterproductive thing to do," Biden told reporters on Thanksgiving. He said the tariffs would be among his first actions upon taking office, reopening the door to a national security law that lets the president impose tariffs with few limitations. Trump spoke with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum not long after he made the new tariff threat.

His research, which hasn't been peer-reviewed, found that about 9.5% of coders were "ghost engineers.' AdvertisementMeasuring output is difficultDenisov-Blanch calls these workers "ghost engineers," defined as software engineers who are only 10% as productive or less than their median colleague. More remote workers were superstar codersMusk now aims to apply that same ruthless efficiency to the federal government. On one hand, he found that the prevalence of "ghost engineers" among remote workers was more than double that among in-person workers. But he also found that many more of the most effective engineers — employees whose performance was at least five times better than their median colleague — were working remotely.

AdvertisementNouriel Roubini thinks higher inflation and slower growth are coming on the back of Trump's policies. "Some of the economic policies may lead to higher economic growth," Roubini said, pointing to Trump's push to loosen regulation and slash the corporate tax rate. "But unfortunately, many of the other policies have the implication of higher inflation and lower economic growth." Ask a European intellectual and you will likely hear the name of Wolfgang Streeck, a German sociologist and theorist of capitalism. In recent decades, Mr. Streeck has described the complaints of populist movements with unequaled power. Mr. Streeck may be best known for his essays in New Left Review, including a dazzling series on the cascade of financial crises that followed the crash of 2008. Mr. Streeck (whose name rhymes with “cake”) argues that today’s contradictions of capitalism have been building for half a century. Profit margins suffered, of course, but that was in the nature of what Mr. Streeck calls the “postwar settlement.” What economies lost in dynamism, they gained in social stability.

Are Airline Loyalty Programs Worth It?
  + stars: | 2024-11-28 | by ( Mike Dang | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When SuzAnn Brantner moved to Indiana from Los Angeles during the coronavirus pandemic, she had been a longtime Delta Air Lines frequent flier, achieving the highest loyalty status the airline offered: Diamond Medallion. “I just always loved Delta,” Ms. Brantner, a 50-year-old marketing executive, said. She traveled every month because of her job and made sure to book all her flights with Delta — even if she had to make a connection and other airlines offered a direct flight. But last year, when Delta announced it would be making modifications to its frequent-flier program, Ms. Brantner began to question her loyalty. On Reddit communities dedicated to three major domestic carriers — Delta, United Airlines and American Airlines — some users are wondering whether maintaining airline loyalty status is worth it anymore as they calculate how much they will need to spend and travel for the rest of the year in order to reach certain status levels next year.

Democrat Derek Tran has defeated Republican incumbent Michelle Steel for a House seat representing California’s Orange County and Los Angeles, NBC News projects, after a contentious race that centered on the candidates’ Asian American identities and use of aggressive anti-China messaging. Tran has performed better with voters in Los Angeles County, where he has had a significant lead over Steel. But the race is tighter in Orange County, the bulk of the district, where voters have repeatedly flipped between red and blue over the past election cycles. She previously served as a supervisor and chairwoman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors before running for Congress. Don Luong, a history teacher and longtime Orange County voter, said the back-and-forth has distracted from the candidates’ actual platforms.

President-elect Donald Trump said he intends to nominate Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, a Stanford University professor known for his criticism of Covid lockdowns, to serve as the next director of the National Institutes of Health. In a statement Tuesday, Trump said, "Dr. Bhattacharya will work in cooperation with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to direct the Nation's Medical Research, and to make important discoveries that will improve Health and save lives." Bhattacharya gained national attention in October 2020, when he co-wrote the "Great Barrington Declaration," an open letter calling on public health officials to roll back Covid lockdowns. Several days after the Great Barrington Declaration came out, 80 researchers from the fields of public health, epidemiology and more published a joint letter in the medical journal The Lancet, calling the idea "a dangerous fallacy." Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization, called the proposal unethical.
