Today, Girma is TikTok's Black creator community development manager, leading # BlackTikTok , a virtual space on the social-media platform that amplifies the voices and content of Black creators. To address this, platforms from Meta to TikTok have introduced various programs over the years that intentionally center nonwhite communities. BI spoke with executives at TikTok and Snapchat who lead the initiatives short-form content creators say have been the most helpful to them. These programs offer tailored knowledge, connections, and funding for diverse creators like Gabrielle Cerberville, who has 1.1 million followers on TikTok . "Discrimination is baked into TikTok's algorithm because it centers on whiteness, so programs like CasaTikTok help normalize content by creators of color," Cerberville said.

Among other lifestyle changes, "I stopped using chemical straighteners," she says. Breast cancer risk was similar for Black and white women, but straightener use was far more common among Black women. Notably, research also has shown that rates of aggressive subtypes of the disease surged in the recent past among U.S. women, with Black women particularly affected. Yet aside from cancer, hair care may pose an additional concern for people planning to get pregnant. More than half of Black study participants reported using their first relaxer before they were 10 years old.

Grace Wales Bonner’s approach to fashion can sometimes feel more like that of an academic rather than a designer. Her collections for Wales Bonner, the brand she started in 2015, are informed by dazzlingly intensive research spanning critical theory, music, literature, history and mysticism. Her clever embrace of so many perspectives and personalities, and her proudly Afro-Atlantic approach to fashion, has made Ms. Wales Bonner, 33, an increasingly influential figure in field. This year, she began showing her collections in Paris, the creative and commercial epicenter of luxury fashion. But Ms. Wales Bonner is also a polymath with artistic ambitions outside fashion.

New York CNN —FTX founder and former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried has made a career out of risky bets that, for a while, paid off. Typically, defense attorneys advise their clients not to testify because it leaves them vulnerable to grilling by the prosecution. But at this point, Bankman-Fried doesn’t have much of a choice, legal experts say. Before his world came undone last year, Bankman-Fried was a rising star, even outside the insular world of crypto. It nonetheless helped to propel his star power and secure a $32 billion valuation for FTX.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s commitment to transform long-marginalized rural and conflict areas and new peace efforts were the highlights of his first year in office, the U.N. special envoy for the South American country said. More than 14,000 FARC fighters gave up their weapons under that agreement, but violence between some rebel groups has grown in parts of Colombia. Leyva said the council resolution states that the justice component should apply to all who participated directly or indirectly in the conflict. Wood reiterated the U.S. commitment to working with Colombia to implement the 2016 peace agreement. Ambassador Barbara Woodward also welcomed the government’s recent progress on rural reform and restitution of land to Indigenous communities.

NEW YORK (AP) — A dozen years ago, Barkley L. Hendricks, the pioneering portrait artist known for vivid, stylish paintings of Black men and women, stood outside the Frick Collection in Manhattan, known for its works by European Old Masters. Still, curators say, he'd likely have never imagined that in 2023, he’d be the first artist of color to have a solo show at the 88-year-old Frick. What is more unusual is that a museum focusing on the 14th through 19th centuries would devote a show to a contemporary portraitist like Hendricks. His sunglasses reflect the buildings outside Hendricks' studio, and even contain a tiny reflection of the artist himself. “Slick” features the artist in a white suit against a white background, wearing a cap of African design.
