CNN —The avian flu virus isolated from a hospitalized teenager in Vancouver has mutations in key areas that could help the virus spread more easily in humans, scientists say. But scientists say the genetic changes are a reminder of what the virus is capable of if it continues to spread. The H5N1 bird flu virus that infected the teen, who is in critical but stable condition, is not the same strain that is transmitting in dairy cattle in the United States. The three mutations are at positions in the virus’ genome that Bloom and other scientists have determined would allow it to attach more easily to human cells. Most of the human H5N1 infections reported in the United States have had red, inflamed eyes as an early symptom, suggesting that’s where the virus entered the body.

Israel’s military has issued 1,126 arrest warrants for ultra-Orthodox conscripts who have not responded to drafting orders, in a move likely to fuel discontent over a controversial decision to remove their decades-long exemption from service. The move is likely to fuel the discontent that has roiled the country since a Supreme Court ruling in June that ultra-Orthodox Jews could not be exempt from military service, as they have been since the founding of Israel. ‘Death rather than draft’Anger had been simmering among the ultra-Orthodox community even before the news of the arrest warrants. For many Haredis, the idea that they would be pulled from studying scripture and drafted into Israel’s military is simply out of the question. However, the community has since grown exponentially, allowing tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox men to now avoid the draft.

Los Angeles CNN —Los Angeles officials on Tuesday moved to cement the city and its schools as sanctuaries for immigrants and LGBTQ youth as the city positions itself to push back strongly against President-elect Donald Trump’s platforms on immigration and gender. The Los Angeles City Council, which represents the second-largest US city, unanimously voted to adopt a “sanctuary city” ordinance that prohibits city resources from being used in immigration enforcement or to cooperate with federal immigration agents, unless required by state law. LGBTQ advocates also fear his presidency will result in wider restrictions on transgender people and rollbacks of protections for other LGBTQ groups. Los Angeles City Council members listen as a man speaks in support of a proposed "sanctuary city" ordinance at City Hall on Tuesday. Teachers and administrators will receive training on how to respond to federal immigration personnel who request information about students and families or who are trying to enter school property.

A voter casts his ballot at a voting station in the fishing village of Ndayane on Nov. 17, 2024, during Senegal's parliamentary elections. Senegal headed to the polls on Sunday to vote in legislative elections that the president hopes will give his party a clear majority and the means to implement an ambitious agenda for reforms. The West African nation saw some of the worst political violence in recent history ahead of the presidential election in March. The new president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has promised to help, but his government is grappling with slower-than-projected growth and a worsening budget deficit. The main threat to his party Pastef's ambitions is the unexpected alliance of two opposition parties, including the Republic party (APR) headed by the former Prime Minister Macky Sall.

Nationalist voices online have also grown into a powerful unofficial force policing speech across Chinese social media. CNN —Although sales of tobacco products have been restricted in hundreds of municipalities across the US, a new study is highlighting some loopholes that allow children to bypass online regulations to buy e-cigarettes. Though the sales of flavored tobacco products have been restricted in eight states and in nearly 400 cities or counties, these regulations don’t completely cover e-commerce or online shopping. “People will not tell the truth when they enter their age, and it’s remarkably easy for kids to get tobacco products mailed to them. More than 1 in 4 underage people report using e-cigarettes daily, and most youth who use e-cigarettes favor flavored products. “Prohibiting tobacco sales completely, or states putting some more restrictions on how the products are delivered to people, can help make e-cigarettes harder to purchase,” he said.
