But for anxious Democrats hoping Jill Biden will step in, don’t hold your breath. Jill Biden has been by his side for almost that entire time. Democratic Party grandees, meanwhile, crowded onto Sunday talk shows to try to turn attention away from Biden’s confused and painful debate showing and to put the spotlight back on Trump. But any set of bad polls showing an already-tough reelection bid was seriously damaged by the debate could trigger panic again. The ferocious counterattack by Biden’s campaign, however, is not answering fundamental questions posed in the aftermath of a debate that shattered confidence in Biden’s capacity to beat Trump for many of his fellow Democrats. Voters saw Biden’s reduced and poignant state with their own eyes. Biden campaign manager Jennifer O’Malley Dillon even blamed any poor forthcoming polls on the media and not the president.

A CBS/YouGov poll found that 46% of registered Democrats think Biden should step aside. Yet Biden dropping out of the race at this stage is also a huge gamble, one that's fairly unprecedented in recent memory. Why Biden should drop out of the raceThe debate was his last good shot at turning things around, and he failed. It's early, but polling so far has not shown a dramatic shift in the race since the debate.

“It would be a Category 5 hurricane,” said one top Democratic official nervous about Biden considering what would happen if the president stepped aside. Biden campaign aides have spent the last couple of days pointing to metrics like some of their best grassroots fundraising days and a surge in job applications since Thursday. Biden is heading to the Camp David presidential retreat where he was expected to spend the rest of the weekend. Democratic operatives always like to mock headlines that describe them as “in disarray.” Now some tell CNN they worry they could end up in more disarray than ever. “President Biden is the nominee and he’s going to remain the nominee,” said Cutter, who is on contract to produce the convention.

The American Psychological Association highlights findings that people who find their jobs meaningful are more engaged, show up to work more, and are healthier. Many in those industries have begun to refer to their work as "fake email jobs" — office jobs that largely involve sending emails without producing anything. Other people have managed to juggle multiple full-time remote jobs thanks to the limited amount of work each job actually required. Working a useless job is a "profound psychological violence," Graeber wrote, one that removes any sense of dignity and fosters "deep rage and resentment." Short of everyone quitting to become their own CEO, employers will need to figure out how to make work feel meaningful for their staff.

London CNN —Private schools in Britain may conjure up images of rolling lawns, pristine tennis courts, and dormitory rooms, serving as gilded hothouses of privilege. Not every private school is “synonymous with privilege and great wealth,” argues Sue Hannam, headteacher at Lichfield Cathedral School, a private school in central England. About 620,000 children are currently enrolled in private schools in Britain, equivalent to almost 6% of all school children, according to the Independent Schools Council. Hodge at the Education Policy Institute noted that, accounting for inflation, private school fees had risen by as much as 25% since 2010. Still, a demographic shift means state schools may “welcome” the influx, Sibieta wrote last year.

Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer speaks during the launch of Labour's general election manifesto on June 13, 2024 in Manchester, United Kingdom. LONDON — Britain's left-leaning Labour Party, considered the front-runner in the upcoming national election, on Thursday said it would be "pro-business" and prioritize "wealth creation" as it released its manifesto. "Economic growth and social justice must go hand in hand," Labour leader Keir Starmer said at a launch event in Manchester, England, calling it a "manifesto for wealth creation, a plan to change Britain." Labour policies are "fully costed," Starmer said, adding, "You can't play fast and loose with the public finances." A central predicament of President Biden’s campaign is how to persuade voters to abandon Donald Trump. “In 2012 the Obama campaign turned a nice guy, Mitt Romney, into a piece of crap,” Steve Murphy, a co-founder of the Democratic media firm MVAR Media, told me. “You can’t do that to Trump because everybody already knows he’s a piece of crap.”Not only do voters know that Trump is a liar and corrupt, narcissistic and venal; his supporters have repeatedly found ways to slide past his liabilities. In April, before the former president was convicted on 34 felony counts by a New York jury, and again this month, after he was found guilty, YouGov asked voters: “Do you think someone who has been convicted of a felony should be allowed to become president?”

CNN —One of the benefits of streaming has been an increased flow of series and movies from around the globe, as services try to keep their shelves filled with fresh alternatives. Perhaps that’s one reason why data indicate more people – especially young adults, who are more prone to second-screen viewing and multitasking – are watching shows in their primary language with the subtitles on. The survey found that those using subtitles cite two primary factors in equal measure: Subtitles enhance their comprehension, and they help them understand accents. The service has increased the number of films and series that support audio descriptions (AD) and subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH). The trend suggests viewers are actively sampling internationally produced material as they seek (and often stumble upon) options via streaming platforms.
