HONG KONG — Hong Kong’s top leader on Tuesday warned President-elect Donald Trump not to interfere in the Chinese territory’s internal affairs after he said he would “100%” free the imprisoned pro-democracy activist and tycoon Jimmy Lai. He said Hong Kong, whose government denies that judicial independence is under threat, also valued the rule of law. “In these respects, I hope that all countries will respect the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and avoid political interference that could affect the judiciary and normal commercial activities in Hong Kong,” he said. The annual U.N. climate summit began on Monday in Baku, Azerbaijan, with many country delegations concerned that Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 5 will hinder progress to limit planetary warming. Trump has promised to again remove the United States, the world’s most significant historic greenhouse gas emitter, from international climate cooperation and maximize the country’s already record-high fossil fuel production. “For those of us dedicated to climate action, last week’s outcome in the United States is obviously bitterly disappointing,” Podesta said at the summit. “Let’s dispense with the idea that climate finance is charity,” he said at the Baku stadium. “An ambitious new climate finance goal is entirely in the self-interest of every nation, including the largest and wealthiest.”This year is on track to be the hottest on record.

Ice loss from the Thwaites Glacier, also known as the “Doomsday” glacier because its collapse could precipitate rapid Antarctic ice loss, may be unstoppable. These are just a few of the stark findings from more than 50 leading snow and ice scientists, which are detailed in a new report from the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative. The report highlights a shift in consensus: Scientists once thought tipping points — like the collapse of AMOC — were distant or remote possibilities. Even if they were on track, those commitments are insufficient to reach global climate goals, the authors say.

CNN —An enormous, rancid-smelling, 52-foot sperm whale has lain beached on the shoreline of the Caspian Sea, the world’s largest lake, since Monday. It’s a jarring sight; no sperm whales live in this vast body of water. “When we think the story is right, we pop up in a city,” said Bart Van Peel of Captain Boomer. The aim is to play with fact and fiction, to challenge people’s beliefs and make them think, Van Peel told CNN. So far, thousands of people have gathered to stare at the whale since it was installed early Monday morning, Van Peel said.
