Lately I’ve been hiking the 125-mile-long Paumanok Path in eastern Long Island in sections. I love that it extends uninterrupted from Rocky Point in the west to Montauk Point in the east. It’s the network effect, which says that a network grows in value as it adds nodes. A long trail becomes better when a short trail through a special piece of woodland is incorporated into it. Conversely, the short trail attracts new attention and visitors.

So after my school term ended I moved, along with a few dozen eager summer planters, to a bush camp outside of Hearst, roughly halfway between Toronto and James Bay. I had duct tape wrapped around each finger and on both heels to cover up the blisters. Perhaps the ethos was best captured by Charlotte Gill in “Eating Dirt,” her book about tree planting: “We didn’t make millions, and we didn’t cure AIDS. At my peak, I planted a few thousand saplings a day. After camp costs and taxes were deducted, I might clear $6,000 in a summer.

CNN —It’s hard to quantify the value of painter and all-around cultural icon Bob Ross, but $9.85 million is a good start. The very first on-air painting from the very first episode of Ross’ beloved series “The Joy of Painting” is looking for a new owner after being kept safe for decades by one of the show’s early volunteers. It has been verified as authentic by Bob Ross Inc.A close-up of the work shows Ross' iconic signature. Rich, poor countries split over costs of pandemic prevention

REUTERS/Bruno Kelly/StringerSince early in the COVID-19 pandemic, global health officials have sought to create a “pandemic treaty” to better prepare for future outbreaks. The governing body of the World Health Organization, or WHO, chose delegates from each of its six administrative regions worldwide to lead the negotiations. Ahead of next week’s meeting, according to officials interviewed by Reuters, the biggest sticking point remains financing for poor countries. The United States and the European Union have both said they support the inclusion of “One Health” provisions in a pandemic treaty. But as a far-reaching and sometimes abstract concept, “One Health” measures could be costly to put into practice.

The La Brea tar pits captured dire wolves, sabertooth cats, and other megafaunal for millennia. Statues of megafaunal mammals give La Brea Tar Pit visitors a sense of what animals roamed the area thousands of years ago. The loss of herbivores at La Brea could've contributed to a feedback loop, making fires — however, they started — more intense, the paper's authors say. Paelongotolist MacPhee cautions that there could be other explanations for why these animals in the 61/67 tar pits stopped appearing. Rolex’s Perpetual Planet initiative has partnered with CNN to drive awareness and education around key sustainability issues and to inspire positive action. “Ancient trees in towns and cities are vital for the health of nature, people and planet,” Naomi Tilley, lead campaigner at the Woodland Trust, said in a press release. “They give thousands of urban wildlife species essential life support, boost the UK’s biodiversity and bring countless health and wellbeing benefits to communities.”According to a 2020 study, ancient trees are in global decline. Despite their demonstrated resilience across centuries, ancient trees might struggle to adapt to the rapid environmental and climatic shifts anticipated in the years ahead. “Most ancient trees aren’t protected by law,” continued Tilley.

Breakthroughs in satellite technology have helped commercialize blue-carbon credits. Over $50 billion worth of carbon credits have been predicted to be traded annually in the voluntary market, according to McKinsey. Blue carbon, which is stored in coastal and marine ecosystems, has become an increasingly important asset in the fight against the climate crisis. Carbon credits can then be verified and issued faster. Satellite data has to be paired with sonar, divers collecting information, or other field data, she added.

It began Friday in the New York Mountains of California’s Mojave National Preserve and crossed state lines into Nevada on Sunday. The fire is burning through and threatening groves of Joshua trees – the branching, spiky plants of the Mojave Desert that can live more than 150 years. The Mojave National Preserve is a significant hotspot for biodiversity, with one conservationist calling it the “crown jewel” of the deserts of Southern California. But rain in the Mojave Desert, which is seasonal and scarce, “poses a unique challenge to firefighters,” the Mojave National Preserve said. They will be on the lookout for desert tortoises, making sure to avoid burrows and active individuals,” the Mojave National Preserve said.

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Spain, July 27 (Reuters) - Firefighters have "stabilised" a wildfire that ravaged 400 hectares of woodland in the centre of the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, local emergency services chief Federico Grillo said on Thursday. Wildfire rages near resort town in southern Turkey

ISTANBUL, July 25 (Reuters) - Turkish firefighters battled a wildfire near the resort of Kemer in the southern province of Antalya on Tuesday, tackling the blaze from land and air amid high temperatures across the region. The blaze spread fast through woodland in the area as a result of strong winds and low humidity, the Antalya governor's office said in a statement. The Turkish blaze spread as an intense summer heatwave scorched large areas of the Mediterranean, with wildfires killing 34 people in Algeria and forcing the evacuation of thousands of tourists from the Greek island of Rhodes. Antalya Governor Ersin Yazici said local authorities had taken all necessary measures to prevent the fire spreading to residential areas. Kemer State Hospital was evacuated as a precautionary measure and six people were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation, local authorities said.

My Impossible Mission to Find Tom Cruise
  + stars: | 2023-07-17 | by ( Caity Weaver | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
These were Keston Park’s problems — not mine and probably not Tom Cruise’s. Tom Cruise, as he and I both now knew, was most likely secretly living at another estate I had turned up in my research — one that was even closer to the airport. Tom Cruise would be crazy not to live here, I thought as I stroked the soft, sun-warmed mane of a little white donkey. Except, upon my arrival at the end of an idyllic woodland stroll, I discovered that Cruise did not live there either. I righted the gnome and ambled on, in search of another public footpath that would, I hoped, lead me to where Cruise actually lived.

The shelter, first opened two decades ago, has seen a host of new residents this year following a string of recent wildfires, droughts and heavy rains. Among the animals housed at the Refugio Animal Cascada, which translates to Waterfall Animal Refuge, are foxes, falcons, owls and pumas. "We welcome (the wildlife) in order to rehabilitate them and release them," wildlife shelter director Kendra Ivelic said. Others, however, cannot be released because of the severity of their injuries, she added, such as a hawk who lost an eye. This week, the shelter is opening a new Environmental Education and Exhibition Center, which will house native animals that cannot be released and have been affected by fires or other environmental disasters.
