New York CNN —Most of the year, people visit Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to ski, fly fish or simply enjoy the region’s vast natural beauty. Setting the stage: the economic backdropInflation has slowed significantly since last year’s Jackson Hole conference, alongside glimmers of a cooling labor market. A look back at past Jackson Hole conferencesLast year’s Jackson Hole conference was notable not just because it was the first time in two years that economists gathered in person. Months after Bernanke’s Jackson Hole speech, he unveiled a whole new phase of bond-purchasing in what has now become known as QE2. A columnist for the Financial Times went so far as to say that Draghi “certainly stole the show this year [at Jackson Hole].”No matter what comes out of the conference this year, it’s clear that what happens in Jackson Hole doesn’t stay in Jackson Hole.

The powerful storm is threatening parts of Mexico and the south-western United States with "significant flooding" and prompted the country's National Hurricane Center (NHC) to issue its first ever tropical storm watch for California. Hilary is expected to approach the west coast of Mexico's Baja California as a hurricane this weekend but weaken to a tropical storm before hitting the U.S. state on Sunday afternoon. Rhome said California and southern Nevada faced risks from severe flooding caused by up to 10 inches of rainfall. A storm surge could cause coastal flooding and destructive waves along the Baja California peninsula, the NHC said.

Sergio Arguelles, president of the Mexican Association of Private Industrial Parks (AMPIP), said parks' investment in state energy assets today is unprecedented. "Mexico would be very well positioned to take advantage of nearshoring if it didn't have such an energy problem," he said. THE SHRINKING STATEMexico's approach to its groaning electricity grid is in contrast to its fast-growing peers, which tend to either incentivize private energy contractors or have state utility companies with deep pockets. Peru vows to use only legitimate force during upcoming protests

LIMA, July 14 (Reuters) - Peru's government vowed on Friday to use only appropriate force in protests planned for next week and guarantee demonstrators' safety, following alleged abuses during the previous series of clashes. President Dina Boluarte met with top officials on Friday to discuss the need to guarantee protesters' human rights. The government's pledge follows months of violent protests between December and March, during which human rights groups documented abuses and multiple "extrajudicial killings" committed by security forces against protesters. Various left-wing groups and unions in Peru have announced new protests starting on July 19 to demand Boluarte's resignation, the closure of Congress, early elections and a new constitution. "We call on citizens who want to exercise the right of assembly, the right to demonstrate and protest, to do so peacefully," Otarola added.
