Chile chasing Pan Am Games soccer golden double

SANTIAGO, Nov 1 (Reuters) - It was a deja vu double celebration for Chile at the Pan American Games on Wednesday as Martina Weil powered to women's 400 metre gold and the men's soccer team took a 1-0 win from the United States. The gold on back-to-back nights at the Estadio Nacional, where the 1962 World Cup final was played, were joyous achievements but it is a double opportunity at soccer gold that really has Chilean hearts pounding. The Chilean men have never won Pan Am Games gold and only once before, in 1987, appeared in the final losing to Brazil while the women have never before got to the semi-finals. Andrea Vargas gave Costa Rica their first gold of the Games successfully defending her 2019 Pan Am title in the 100m hurdles while Brazil's Eduardo Rodrigues won the men's. Led by double Olympic champion McLain Ward the U.S. won the equestrian team jumping gold ahead of Canada and Brazil.

SANTIAGO, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Chileans celebrated one of their biggest nights of the Pan American Games on Tuesday with Santiago Adolfo Ford claiming decathlon gold and the women's soccer team winning a 2-1 thriller over the U.S. to reach the final. The judo competition closed with Cuba beating Brazil to win the mixed team title and the great Idalys Ortiz adding another gold to her glittering resume. It was the perfect Pan Am Games goodbye for the 34-year-old four-times Olympic medallist, who has announced she will retire after next year's Paris Summer Games. Fencing was an all-American battle on Tuesday with Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Nick Itkin and Magda Skarbonkiewicz taking gold. The suspension was imposed following the allegedly non-consensual kiss Rubiales gave to Spain player Jenni Hermoso after this year's Women's World Cup final in which Spain beat England. The "kiss-gate" scandal completely overshadowed what was a momentous moment for Spanish women's soccer and blew up into a sexism storm that attracted global headlines. Rubiales resigned in September from his position as RFEF president, saying his position had become untenable. President of Spain's women's Liga F soccer league Beatriz Alvarez speaks with Reuters during an interview at their headquarters in Madrid, Spain, September 27, 2023. "At least since I came to the Liga F, there has been an absolute lack of institutional respect - as well as sexism - from the federation," Alvarez added. Alvarez recounted how her third child had been born just a day before the Liga F season kicked off. Alvarez said she was not invited by the RFEF to the Women's World Cup final in Sydney, which she believes would never have happened to the president of the men's league. Still, she said the fact that the women's team won the World Cup had put them in the global spotlight, which should boost women's football, help to stamp out sexist attitudes and promote equality.

TORONTO, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Canada will get the chance to defend their Olympic women's soccer gold medal after clinching a spot at next year's Paris Summer Games on Tuesday after a 2-1 win over Jamaica. "This team is better when they're going after something and ultimately we are going after putting the wrong right of that World Cup." Qualifying for the Olympics provided a small measure of redemption after a bitterly disappointing performance at the Women's World Cup, where Canada failed to advance out of the group stage. "To go and get on the podium again, and you've just seen at the World Cup, it is going to be harder than it has ever been." MADRID, Sept 27 (Reuters) - The investigating judge at Spain's High Court has expanded the scope of a sexual assault probe over the allegedly non-consensual kiss on women's national team player Jenni Hermoso to include Jorge Vilda, the squad's former coach, the court said on Wednesday.
