Asian American groups are sounding the alarm after the House this week passed a bill seeking to revive the highly controversial, Trump-era surveillance program the China Initiative. “Originally a Trump-era initiative sold as a national security measure, the China Initiative instead turned out to be a witch hunt,” leaders from civil rights groups Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, Stop AAPI Hate, and the Asian American Scholar Forum said in a joint statement. The groups added that the initiative devastated families and impeded the United States’ ability to retain and attract academic talent. Asian American advocacy groups have long been warning of the security program’s “chilling” effects. Former President Donald Trump will not be sentenced in his New York criminal hush money case until after the Nov. 5 presidential election, a judge ruled Friday. The sentencing, which was set for Sept. 18, will instead take place on Nov. 26, Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan ruled. The Supreme Court's ruling had already spurred Merchan to delay Trump's sentencing, which was originally scheduled for July 11, by more than two months. Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung in a statement Friday said, "There should be no sentencing in the Manhattan DA's Election Interference Witch Hunt." "As mandated by the United States Supreme Court, this case, along with all of the other Harris - Biden Hoaxes, should be dismissed," Cheung said.

The previous indictment, which clocked in at 45 pages, had included what the US Supreme Court says is the kind of official-act evidence that can no longer be used in prosecuting presidents. The replacement indictment — which uses the same font and spans 36 pages — removes references to Trump's presidential acts with surgical precision, said Michael Bachner, a former Manhattan prosecutor and frequent commentator on Trump's legal travails. But in the new indictment, it's Trump the 2020 presidential candidate, not Trump the former president, who is charged. AdvertisementIn refiling his indictment, Smith was smart to convene a new grand jury rather than re-submit the case to the original panel. Still, the new indictment doesn't guarantee that judges won't throw out the case before it ever reaches a jury.

CNN —The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s criminal trial related to hush money payments said he will not recuse himself from the case, rejecting the former president’s latest attempt to remove him ahead of his sentencing next month. Trump has repeatedly sought to remove Judge Juan Merchan from the proceedings, citing work the judge’s daughter has done for Democratic campaigns. In denying Trump’s motion, the judge wrote, “this court now reiterates for the third time, that which should already be clear – innuendo and mischaracterization do not a conflict create.”The judge said Trump has offered no new facts to warrant another review. “Counsel has merely repeated arguments that have already been denied by this and higher courts,” Merchan wrote in his decision. “President Trump will continue to fight this scam, and will always do all he can to save this great country from the dangerously liberal Harris-Biden mess.”This story has been updated with additional reaction.

The authorities in Bangladesh have opened investigations into tens of thousands of people in recent weeks as security forces combed through neighborhoods as part of their deadly crackdown on a student protest that had spiraled into violence. The widening legal net, confirmed in interviews with police officials and a review of records, comes as arrests surpassed 10,000 since the crackdown on protesters began two weeks ago. Charges range from vandalism and arson to theft, trespassing and damage of state property. “This is a witch hunt,” said Smriti Singh, the regional director for South Asia at Amnesty International. Conservative estimates put the death toll at more than 200, mostly students and youths.

CNN —The stereotypical “cat lady” is one of pop culture’s most bizarre characters — and easiest punching bags. And though Vance’s description of “cat lady” didn’t include “crazy,” madness has been associated with “cat ladies” for over a century. “There is something about the independence of cats, something I like about them, which can be linked with a suspicion of independent women,” said Alice Madicott, whose book “Cat Women” prods the “crazy cat lady” stereotype. Many women proudly reclaim ‘cat lady’So-called cat ladies have been reclaiming the term for more than a century. And since Vance’s comments resurfaced this week, “childless cat lady” is now appearing on new merchandise including bumper stickers and yard signs.

CNN —On a night Republicans projected bravado around their 2024 presidential ticket, Donald Trump started his prime-time address by displaying a rare vulnerability. The former president’s son Eric Trump delivered conservative red meat, much like his brother Donald Trump Jr. had a night earlier. Little mention of Biden (by name)Trump said Thursday night that he would use Biden’s name only once. Thursday night, CNN reported that many senior-ranking White House and campaign officials now privately believe that Biden must abandon his campaign for a second term – and soon. And especially so on its final night, when the politicians mostly gave way to right-leaning celebrities.

Special counsel Jack Smith on Wednesday filed a notice appealing the stunning decision earlier this week by Florida court federal Judge Aileen Cannon that dismissed the criminal classified documents case against former President Donald Trump. Smith's appeal, which was expected, will be heard in the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Atlanta, which reviews cases arising from Florida federal courts. Peter Carr, a spokesman for Smith, said Wednesday, "We have no comment beyond the filing itself at this time." The Democrat-led Justice Department should drop these politically motivated, election interference efforts against President Trump immediately." The appeal is likely to end up at the U.S. Supreme Court, regardless of how the 11th Circuit appeals court rules.

Thousands of Trump supporters in Milwaukee on Monday night hailed their leader, elevating him from MAGA superhero to saint-like status. For Trump’s millions of American fans, Monday night was a validation of their faith in God and the ex-president and the righteousness of his mission. A list of Black Republican and female Republican lawmakers gave speeches, offering a somewhat misleading perception that the GOP has a deep and diverse bench. One GOP source said speechwriters at the convention had thrown out all their pre-written material for the week’s top speakers and started again. The ex-president has a new chance at politics and life in the wake of his assassination attempt.
