Here are some of the biggest financial blind spots, according to several certified financial planners on CNBC's Digital Financial Advisor Council. 1. Credit scoresConsumers often don't understand the importance of their credit score, said Kamila Elliott, CFP, co-founder and CEO of Collective Wealth Partners based in Atlanta. The average person with a credit score between 760 and 850 would get a 6.5% interest rate, according to national FICO data as of April 1. The latter's monthly payment would cost $324 more relative to the person with a better credit score — amounting to an extra $116,000 over the life of the loan, according to FICO's loan calculator. "Ten out of 10 people couldn't explain how the tax withholding system works," said Ted Jenkin, CFP, CEO and founder of oXYGen Financial based in Atlanta.

There is officially one winner for the $1.128 billion Mega Millions jackpot — and the taxman will take a sizable share, experts say. A single ticket sold in New Jersey won the game's fifth-largest grand prize after matching all six numbers drawn Tuesday night, Mega Millions announced Wednesday. The final jackpot dropped from an estimated $1.13 billion to $1.128 billion based on actual ticket sales. The lucky winner will choose between two options: an annuitized prize worth $1.128 billion or a lump-sum payout of $536.6 million cash. New Jersey taxes prizes over $10,000 and the winner will owe millions to the state, including a mandatory withholding, on top of their federal tax bill, he said.

CNN —Senegalese voters will choose their next president on Sunday in a delayed and high-stakes election that poses a test for the country’s democracy. The election might typically gain little notice beyond the borders of the sparsely populated northern European country of 5.6 million. But Finland, the newest member of NATO, shares the longest border with Russia — some 830 miles — and its politics have taken on special interest to its European and American allies as the geopolitical order shifts. U.S. power is being challenged by Moscow and Beijing, and Europe is grappling with its largest land war since World War II. At the same time, the American commitment to aiding Ukraine looks increasingly in doubt, and an unpredictable American presidential election looms. Finland’s president is responsible for foreign policy, and whoever wins will bear chief responsibility for steering the country through a changing world.

U.S. Strikes Test Iran’s Will to Escalate

As Iran and the United States assessed the damage done by American airstrikes in Syria and Iraq, the initiative suddenly shifted to Tehran and its pending decision whether to respond or take the hit and de-escalate. The expectation in Washington and among its allies is that the Iranians will choose the latter course, seeing no benefit in getting into a shooting war with a far larger power, with all the risks that implies. In response to a drone attack by an Iran-backed militia that killed three American soldiers on Jan. 28, the United States hit back against that group and several other Iran-backed militias on Friday night with 85 targeted strikes. In the aftermath, American officials insisted there was no back-channel discussion with Tehran, no quiet agreement that the U.S. would not strike directly at Iran. “There’s been no communications with Iran since the attack,” John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council, told reporters in a call on Friday night after the retaliatory strikes were completed.

The United States launched attacks in the Iraq and Syria on Friday, its first retaliatory strikes for the killing of three American soldiers, according to an official at the Department of Defense. American forces are expected to hit targets in different countries outside Iran, U.S. officials said. Their calibrated statements appeared to indicate that it was unlikely the reprisal strikes would hit targets inside Iran itself. There have been more than 160 attacks on U.S. forces by Iran-backed groups since Oct. 7, according to the Pentagon. In recent weeks, the U.S. military also carried out strikes against Houthi forces in Yemen, hitting launch sites and command centers.

For most students and their families, which college they will choose hinges on the amount of financial aid offered and the breakdown between grants, scholarships, work-study opportunities and student loans. This year, schools are now waiting on that FAFSA information to begin building financial aid packages and to give students and families enough time to weigh their options. "The delay in sending FAFSA data to colleges will cause college financial aid offers to be delayed until at least April, maybe even May." "Making an offer of admission without offering a full financial aid offer really isn't useful for most families," said Adam Miller, vice president for admission and financial aid at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. To do this, Whitman and other colleges would need to leverage the information families provided in their completed CSS Profile.

The order by the Hong Kong High Court also is not a remedy for the crisis of confidence haunting China’s financial markets. Markets in both Hong Kong and Shanghai fell Tuesday while share prices of property developers sank. State-owned Chinese banks and other domestic entities own most of the debt owed by Chinese property developers. David Goodman, director of the University of Sydney’s China Studies Center, said he thinks China’s property debt burdens are unlikely to precipitate a major financial crisis. “The fact of the matter is that the Chinese financial system is not as open or as marketized (as in the United States),” he said.

The New York City property exec and veteran real estate broker pointed to potential trouble heading for the US office space, thanks to the plunging demand for office buildings since the pandemic, and poor lending conditions across the commercial real estate sector. AdvertisementExperts have been warning of trouble in the commercial real estate sector for the last year as credit conditions in the economy tighten. Many commercial real estate mortgages are financed at interest rates around 3.5%-4%. New York City alone has around 100 million square feet of empty office space, Knakal estimated. Office buildings, meanwhile, could soon double the price decline they saw in 2023, the real estate firm Cohen & Steers estimated.

New Hampshire Primary: Wake-Up Call or Last Call?

Should Trump's lead hold, says Andrew Smith, director of the University of New Hampshire poll, Trump will become the first candidate – aside from sitting presidents – to win both the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. "We're so far past the days when voters nationally were really just waking up" to the campaign debates in the early weeks of a presidential election year, says Dante Scala, a University of New Hampshire professor and author of the book "Stormy Weather: The New Hampshire Primary and Presidential Politics." New Hampshire GOP voters, however, are a different breed of Republicans, Smith says, focusing more on fiscal conservatism and small government. Haley has 36% support and DeSantis 6% backing among primary voters. Trump seems to think so, too: He has focused much of his vitriol in the waning days of the New Hampshire campaign on Haley.

An incumbent hasn't lost his party's presidential nomination since Democrats passed over Franklin Pierce in 1856. Abraham Lincoln's election in 1860 marked the last time someone from a new party — in his case, the Republican Party — won the White House. But with the United States deeply divided and somewhat anxious about the prospect of another Biden-Trump campaign, third party candidates insist voters are restless enough to defy history. West announced last month that he no longer was running under the Green Party banner, but as an independent. Democrats assume that many of voters supporting a progressive environmental activist would likely have chosen Clinton if forced to choose between the major parties.

Abortion rights at center of Ohio and Virginia elections

[1/2] Peter Range, the executive director of Ohio Right to Life, speaks to members of the Clark County Republican Party about the state's upcoming referendum on abortion rights, in Springfield, Ohio, U.S., October 26, 2023. In Mississippi, Republican Governor Tate Reeves is seeking another four-year term. Last year, abortion rights advocacy groups scored a series of victories by placing abortion-related referendums on the ballot, including in conservative states. In addition to Tuesday's amendment in Ohio that would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, similar ballot measures are advancing in several states for 2024, including swing states Arizona and Florida. Anti-abortion forces have campaigned against the Ohio amendment as too extreme, while abortion rights groups have warned that rejecting it would pave the way for a stringent ban to take effect.
