Existing home sales dropped 5.9% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.43 million units last month. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast home sales would tumble to a rate of 4.38 million units. The 30-year fixed mortgage rate breached 7% in October for the first time since 2002, according to data from mortgage finance agency Freddie Mac. At October's sales pace, it would take 3.3 months to exhaust the current inventory of existing homes, up from 2.4 months a year ago.

Goods prices rose 0.3% in September. Gasoline jumped 5.7%, making up 60% of the rise in goods prices. Food prices rose 0.5%, lifted by fresh and dry vegetables as well as chicken eggs. Excluding the volatile food, energy and trade services components, producer prices rose 0.2% in October. In the 12 months through October, the core PPI rose 5.4% after increasing 5.6% in September.
