AdvertisementIt's a story all too familiar for some older Americans: An unexpected health crisis derails their retirement planning. With insufficient help from health insurance or Social Security, medical bills eat up any savings or income they have. Jones, who gets $2,200 a month in Social Security, has had to take on part-time work, which made her ineligible for some federal assistance. She paid for chemo out of pocket, spending her way through her retirement savings and maxing out her credit cards. Amend said it's crucial for older Americans to believe everything will be OK, noting "your mindset perpetuates what your outcome will be."

New York CNN —The McDonald’s $5 meal deal is staying on menus until December, a sign that inflation-weary customers are devouring value meals recently offered by fast food chains. The Chicago-based fast-food giant announced the $5 meal deal in June. In July, McDonald’s said that the vast majority of restaurants would keep it on the menu until August. The meal features either a McChicken sandwich or McDouble cheeseburger, small fries, 4-piece Chicken McNuggets and a small soft drink. McDonald’s also announced a slew of fall deals — from $0.50 Double Cheeseburgers for National Cheeseburger Day on Sept. 18 to a $2 McCrispy sandwich for National Fried Chicken Sandwich Day on Nov. 9.

New York CNN —Fast casual chain BurgerFi filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Wednesday after months of reporting financial distress. BurgerFi, filing for bankruptcy protection in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, said all of its corporate locations will operate normally. Franchise-owned locations are exempt from the bankruptcy filing, the company said in a press release. A common route is Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which allows the company to solve its financial problems through reorganization. According to the bankruptcy filing Wednesday, BurgerFi estimates it had between $100 million and $500 million in liabilities, but only $50 million to $100 million in assets.

New York CNN —BurgerFi, the fast-casual burger chain and owner of Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza, is running out of cash – and options. Because of the lack of cash, BurgerFi is uncertain if it can continue to operate its 60 pizza stores and 102 burger restaurants. Food prices have also hurt BurgerFi – the company cited a price increase in chicken wings and higher wages for its increase in operating expenses. BurgerFi first rang the alarm in May, when it announced it was going over “strategic alternatives” due to its liquidity challenges. BurgerFi (BFI) went public in 2020, and its stock has dropped almost 60% year to date.

Starbucks’ sales have fallen for two straight quarters. Mobile app and drive-thru orders make up more than 70% of Starbucks’ sales at its approximately 9,500 company-operated stores in the United States. Restaurant analysts say that Starbucks, which has historically done less television advertising than rivals, will use marketing to try to improve customers’ perceptions of Starbucks’ brand and prices. New York CNN —Fast food giant Yum Brands is going all in on value — but only Taco Bell is performing well enough to immediately bring back inflation-weary customers. A few years ago, the organizers of one of the largest U.S. exercise programs for people with Parkinson’s disease realized they had a problem: Most of the students were white. But people who run Parkinson’s exercise programs in a handful of U.S. cities describe great difficulty in recruiting Black people. Johnson said his Chicago-area initiative offered a free six-month exercise program for Parkinson’s patients and increased marketing in the Black community but got little traction. When a white person shows up at the doctor’s office with such symptoms, a doctor would likely recognize them as signs of Parkinson’s, said Bernard Coley, an advocate for people with Parkinson’s disease, especially those in underengaged communities. After his less-than-successful efforts to recruit Black Parkinson’s patients into his exercise program in Chicago, Johnson concluded that the fact that he’s not Black is an “important factor.”Leventhal, who runs the Parkinson’s exercise program in New York, has come to the same conclusion.

London CNN —Diageo, one of the world’s biggest drinks makers, has reported its first drop in sales since the pandemic, as cash-strapped consumers cut back on spending. The maker of Johnnie Walker whisky, Casamigos tequila and Guinness beer is the latest consumer business to report a hit to sales as inflation and high interest rates take a bite out of household budgets. On Monday, McDonald’s (MCD) said global sales fell for the first time since 2020 as fewer customers visited the fast-food chain’s restaurants. Sales of Johnnie Walker fell by 2% globally, and by 10% in North America, the company’s largest region. That demand has since declined, while higher inflation and interest rates have left consumers with less to spend on luxuries.

Americans keep turning their backs on McDonald’s
  + stars: | 2024-07-29 | by ( David Goldman | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —Inflation has caught up with McDonald’s, and budget-conscious Americans are looking elsewhere for their fast-food fix. The tough environment for McDonald’s wasn’t limited to the United States: Sales at stores open for at least a year fell 1% globally. The plan focuses on value meal plans like the popular $5 meal introduced earlier this summer. He pointed to McDonald’s new emphasis on chicken, which is now on par with beef sales at restaurants. Whether or not that viral post was the final straw for McDonald’s customers, Americans have been punishing the company ever since.

USA Today reported in 2013 that McDonald's sold roughly 75 burgers every second, or 4,500 burgers every minute. Among those burgers, many of them are Big Macs — the chain's signature burger and arguably its most famous menu item.
