The Yankees will host Games 1 and 2 of this ALCS and, if needed, Games 6 and 7. Yankees veterans show upWhen the Yankees needed them most, their veterans finally showed up en masse. Then the baseball fell to earth, dropping harmlessly into the glove of Yankees right fielder Juan Soto, just in front of the fence. According to the official scorer at Kauffman Stadium, the wind was blowing from right field to left field at 6 mph at first pitch. Not at Kauffman Stadium, where the power alleys are 387 feet from home plate and straight-away right field is more than 370 feet away.

Later Wednesday, the White House said Biden had spoken by phone with officials in Florida in advance of Hurricane Milton making landfall. Harris’ visible role on the storm response comes as Hurricane Helene and now Milton have become part of the 2024 campaign, with less than four weeks to go before Election Day. She’s been making statements on issues that don’t typically fall under the purview of her official role as vice president. Her campaign has been consumed in recent days by the latest hurricane as it is working to evacuate staff, pause voter outreach across Florida and keep an eye on potential early voting ramifications following Hurricane Helene in a battleground state like North Carolina. It’s looking like the storm of the century,” Biden said during the briefing.

CNN —The exceptionally warm water of the Gulf of Mexico that supercharged deadly Helene last month was made up to 500 times more likely by human-caused climate change, which also ramped up the hurricane’s wind and rain, according to a new scientific analysis. These ultra-warm ocean temperatures were made between 200 and 500 times more likely by climate change, driven by humans burning fossil fuels, according to the World Weather Attribution, a network of scientists that calculates the role of climate change in extreme weather events using real world data and climate models. Hurricanes as intense as Helene are now about 2.5 times more likely in the region, the study found. Baker Jarvis, a resident of Keaton Beach, Florida, works to recover his belongings from his home after Hurricane Helene on September 29, 2024. Rapid intensification, when a hurricane’s wind speed increases by at least 35 mph within 24 hours, has now become more common due to climate change.

There is no evidence to suggest the fire was intentionally set, Maui Fire and Public Safety Chief Bradford Ventura said. The Lahaina fire was one of three wildfires that ignited on Maui that day; the report did not address the two other, less-destructive fires. Since last year, thousands of residents have sued Hawaiian Electric, Maui County and the state of Hawaii over the fire. The utility has acknowledged that one of its downed power lines ignited a blaze early that morning off Lahainaluna Road in the hills above Lahaina. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (AP) — The Dominican Republic announced Wednesday that it would start massive deportations of Haitians living illegally in the country, expelling up to 10,000 of them a week. Government spokesman Homero Figueroa told reporters that the government took the decision after noticing an “excess” of Haitian migrants in the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. Last year, the Dominican Republic deported more than 174,000 people it says are Haitians, and in the first half of the year, it has expelled at least 67,000 more. Activists have long criticized the administration of President Luis Abinader for what they say are ongoing human rights violations of Haitians and those of Haitian descent born in the Dominican Republic. This week, Putin once again rattled the arms-control world by revealing proposed changes to his country’s nuclear doctrine. “In the current version of Russia’s nuclear doctrine, there is no distinction between an aggression by nuclear- and non-nuclear-weapon state,” he wrote. “There are two noteworthy points of departure from the previous 2020 Russian military doctrine,” she wrote on X. “2020 doctrine allowed the use of NW [nuclear weapons] in response to conventional aggression that jeopardizes the very existence of the state. Donald Trump’s presidential campaign told NBC News on Wednesday that if the former president were re-elected, his administration would support “universal access” to in-vitro fertilization, potentially opening up the door for same-sex couples to receive coverage for the expensive fertility treatment. President Trump also supports universal access to contraception and IVF,” campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. Many of Trump’s campaign promises regarding LGBTQ issues center on transgender people. Only seven states — including Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey and New York — require IVF benefits to include same-sex couples, according to a report from nonprofit news website Stateline. In May, a gay couple filed a first-of-its-kind class action lawsuit against New York City alleging that the city’s health insurance plan is discriminatory because it doesn’t cover IVF for male couples.

CNN —Despite pledging a “battle without limits” against Israel, Hezbollah’s response to back-to-back Israeli attacks appears to have been carefully calibrated. Hezbollah joined the fight against Israel out of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza after Hamas’ October 7 attacks against Israel. Israel accused Hezbollah of firing the rocket, which came from the direction of Lebanon, but Hezbollah has “firmly” denied it was behind the strike. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began to pivot from fighting Hamas in Gaza to Hezbollah in Lebanon, backed by bellicose allies on his extreme right. Washington CNN —Boeing factory workers felt pressured to prioritize production speed over quality and said they did not receive enough training to properly perform their jobs, according to the results of a special investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) published Wednesday. In January, a door plug blew off a 737 Max operated by Alaska Airlines shortly after takeoff. One of the more egregious examples, according to the audit, was a Boeing mechanic who used an improvised measuring device to check gaps between components. But there is still much work to be done on fixing Boeing’s safety culture, he said. “I think the safety culture change is going to be a long-term project,” Whitaker said.

Stocks surged to open Thursday trading in the wake of the Federal Reserve’s announcement that it was lowering interest rates by half a percentage point. The Fed’s cut was widely expected, but came in larger than many analysts were forecasting. “The continued decline in mortgage rates is giving the mortgage market a much-needed boost,” Bob Broeksmit, the president and CEO of the Mortgage Bankers Association, said in a statement. At the same time, a growing set of indicators suggest economic growth may have begun heading in the wrong direction. “The Fed has signaled a high sensitivity to labor-market weakness,” Nomura Holdings financial group said in a note to clients Thursday.

While school meal prices vary throughout the country, a survey conducted by the School Nutrition Association, a trade organization, found that lunches typically cost about $2.83 for elementary school students, $3 for middle school students and $3.05 for high school students. The prices mean that the $100 million in transaction fees could have bought another 33 million or so school lunches or over 55 million school breakfasts. “Junk fees on school lunch should not exist. A handful of states have made universal school meals permanent, but most have returned to the pre-pandemic format. “School lunch should always be free, and definitely free of judgment,” Fetterman said at the hearing on Wednesday.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea tested new tactical ballistic missiles using super-large warheads and modified cruise missiles on Wednesday as leader Kim Jong Un called for stronger conventional weapons and nuclear capabilities, state news agency KCNA reported.
