Dwayne Johnson said that "Black Adam" isn't part of the new DC film universe's "first chapter." The movie didn't click with audiences, showing the limits of superhero movies and the Rock's star power. The rest of Johnson's statement read like an obituary, saying that he'll "always look back on the fan reaction to Black Adam with tremendous gratitude." Johnson's damage-control instincts kicked into high gear with "Black Adam," a passion project he spent over a decade trying to make. Black Adam isn't a well-known character, so it was always going to face an uphill battle.

CNN —DC fans across the globe collectively mourned Wednesday as British actor Henry Cavill said he will no longer be donning the red cape as Superman in the DC Comics extended cinematic universe. Cavill even made a cameo as Superman in a mid-credits scene at the end of “Black Adam,” the DC film starring Dwayne Johnson. “I will, after all, not be returning as Superman,” Cavill wrote. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman's life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. The third "Wonder Woman" movie is no longer moving forward, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Director Patty Jenkins' film apparently doesn't fit in with future plans for the DC movie universe. The report follows an Instagram post from star Gal Gadot, who shared on Tuesday a photo of herself as Wonder Woman, with a caption that said she "Can't wait to share her next chapter with you." The first "Wonder Woman" in 2017 was a critical and box-office hit, grossing $822 million globally. 2020's sequel, "Wonder Woman 1984," earned just $170 million, but was released amid the coronavirus pandemic and debuted simultaneously in theaters and on the streaming service HBO Max.

In Hollywood, muscle-bound actors with tree-trunk biceps rule the box office. But just how big is too big? Dwayne Johnson’s macho DC Comics character “Black Adam” has traps large enough that it’s a wonder he can turn his neck to see the bad guys. “The Lost City” actor Channing Tatum brandishes toned pecs the size of football helmets. And why exactly do the sinewy fighter pilots in “Top Gun: Maverick,” the highest-grossing film of 2022, need to look like they could bench an actual plane?
LOS ANGELES — Chris Evans may have put down Captain America’s shield but he’s got a new badge of honor: he’s been named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive. Evans, who for nearly a decade played Captain America in Marvel’s sprawling superhero films, takes the baton from another Avenger, Paul Rudd. “It’s ripe for harassment.”Among those likely to heckle him are co-stars and previous Sexiest Man Alive winners like Rudd, Ryan Reynolds and Chris Hemsworth. Evans’ first film role came in 2000′s “The New Comers” and he played superhero Johnny Storm in two “Fantastic Four” films released in 2005 and 2007. “It’s something that as I become old and saggy I can look back on and say ‘I remember then…’” Evans said.
CNN —People magazine has crowned actor Chris Evans this year’s Sexiest Man Alive. The former “Captain America” star, who couldn’t appear on the show, was instead congratulated by Johnson on the set of their movie, “Red One.”“It means a lot coming from a former Sexiest Man Alive,” Evans tells Johnson in the video. Johnson, a 2016 Sexiest Man cover star, however, goes on to correct him: “I never give the title up….I’m Sexiest Man Alive in perpetuity, which means for life.”Evans, confused, tries to get clarification, but Johnson stops him. We’re sharing it!”Evans agrees and the two sexiest men alive live, apparently, happily ever after. But not before Johnson prompts his co-star to say something “sexy” into the camera and Evans obliges.
DC's "Black Adam" cost nearly $200 million to make and has earned $321 million globally. It doesn't have a China release yet, and Marvel's "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" opens this weekend. With Marvel's "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" hitting theaters this weekend, "Black Adam" will likely quickly fizzle at the box office. The first "Black Panther" grossed $202 million in its first weekend in the US, more than the $138 million "Black Adam" has earned in three weekends. On its current trajectory, "Black Adam" is on the way to being a box-office disappointment.
CNN —Henry Cavill is putting down his blades and moving on from “The Witcher” after three seasons as the leading man on the Netflix series. “As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men,” Cavill wrote. “The Witcher,” which premiered on Netflix in 2019, is based on the fantasy book series by Andrzej Sapkowski and created for television by Lauren Schmidt. “It was something I wasn’t going to let pass me by without giving it my best shot,” Cavill said at Comic Con. They said, ‘They’re not ready.’”But now, Cavill is surely focused on reprising another iconic previous role on his resume.
There are a lot of Snyder-esque moments in "Black Adam," particularly when it comes to slo-mo action sequences and an overall somber tone. Johnson's Black Adam is a serious-faced anti-hero who isn't afraid to kill a lot of people. "Black Adam" is the perfect encapsulation of both the last nearly decade of DC movies and what the franchise wants to be in the future. For all of its troubles, the DC movie universe had at least seemed to be course correcting. The director, Jaume Collet-Serra, doesn't so much as put his personal touch on it as borrow familiar touches from past Snyder-directed DC movies.

James Gunn and Peter Safran will be the next co-heads of Warner Bros. The news comes during a tumultuous time for the newly formed Warner Bros. Zaslav has been looking for someone to steady the ship at the DC film division, home to superheroes such as Wonder Woman and Superman, as Warner Bros. Warner Bros. Henry Cavill confirms his return as Superman
  + stars: | 2022-10-24 | by ( Dan Heching | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
It’s Superman… again! Henry Cavill has confirmed what passionate hero-loving moviegoers have been waiting for – the British actor will return to the role of Clark Kent, also known as Superman, in the DC Comics extended cinematic universe. He started off by saying he wanted to wait until after people had a chance to watch “Black Adam” before speaking about his return. “But now that plenty of you have [seen the movie],” Cavill said, “I wanted to make it official: I’m back as Superman.”He thanked the fans “most of all” for their patience. However, many are clamoring for another standalone film for Cavill’s Superman, which would mark the first since 2013’s “Man of Steel.”“Black Adam” took the No.
"Black Adam" stormed into theaters this weekend, snaring $67 million domestically. This is a good sign for the film industry, which saw attendance shrink during the pandemic and is currently dealing with a significant lack of new film releases. "Black Adam" is one of only four major releases coming to theaters before the end of the year. The others are all Disney films: "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" (Nov. 11), "Strange World" (Nov. 23) and "Avatar: The Way of Water" (Dec. 16). The hope from movie theater owners is that films like "Black Adam" can continue to drive traffic to theaters beyond its opening weekend.
DC Films’ latest release into the endless superhero pantheon, “Black Adam,” has a lot riding on Dwayne Johnson’s muscled shoulders. Black Adam, one of the regularly scheduled villains in the comic book, was supposed to be his main antagonist. And while “Black Panther” did a great job of making its bad guy both a certifiable badass and a nuanced character, “Black Adam” fails miserably. “Black Adam” has an interesting inkling of an idea: an oppressed culture that needs to overthrow the invading white men. But the midcredit sequence in “Black Adam” unfortunately suggests studio leaders are committed to making the same mistakes all over again.
‘Black Adam’ Review: Rock Bottom

There are superhero movies about the War on Terror, the implacability of evil and the unintended consequences that might ensue if gods were among us. Then there are superhero movies about how cool it might look to shoot lightning out your fingertips. Like “Aquaman” and “Shazam!,” “Black Adam” feels like its script was dreamed up during seventh-grade recess. Adrianna is being pursued by the thugs ruling Kahndaq, so Teth Adam helpfully smites her enemies via such digitally colorful actions as roasting attackers with fingertip-fired electricity and smashing helicopters together while flying. Teth Adam, or Black Adam, as he will come to be known in a nod to both his dyspeptic personality and his skin-tight superhero garb, has much the same powers as Superman, but tied to attitude instead of innocence.
