First openly transgender lawyer to argue at Supreme Court
  + stars: | 2024-10-21 | by ( ) www.nbcnews.com   time to read: +4 min
An American Civil Liberties Union lawyer will make history in December as the first openly transgender attorney to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court, opposing Tennessee’s Republican-backed law banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors. The Supreme Court on Monday ordered that the argument time for the ban’s challengers be divided between the Justice Department and attorneys representing the original plaintiffs who sued the state. Several plaintiffs — including two transgender boys, a transgender girl and their parents — sued in Tennessee to defend the treatments they have said improved their happiness and wellbeing. The Supreme Court has confronted several cases in the past decade implicating LGBTQ rights. In 2020, it ruled that a landmark federal law forbidding workplace discrimination protects gay and transgender employees.

Four months later, she was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive forms of the disease. AAPI women in this age cohort had the second-lowest rate of breast cancer among all racial groups in 2000. “Breast cancer is still more common the older we get, but it’s alarming to see younger women being diagnosed,” said Dr. Helen Chew, director of the clinical breast cancer program at UC Davis Health. Korean, Chinese, Filipina and South Asian American women face the highest risk of breast cancer. Disaggregating data is key to understanding what’s driving the rapid rise in breast cancer among Asian women, Chew said.

On Thursday, China unveiled new measures to prop up its struggling property market. AdvertisementChina officials have directed a wave of stimulus measures at the country's beleaguered property market, but the effort hasn't done much to impress Wall Street experts. On Thursday, China unveiled new measures to prop up its flailing housing market, including quicker access to credit for developers and renovations in run-down urban areas. "While a step in the right direction, these stimulus measures are so far falling short of the scope and scale needed to reflate the Chinese economy. But Yingrui Wang, China economist at AXA Investment Managers, says that optimism could be short-lived as the housing stimulus lacks detail.

The People's Bank of China triggered two market support programs after China announced economic data. China's economy grew 4.6% in the third quarter of this year, the country's statistics bureau announced as it touted a "stable growth trend." "The property market unsurprisingly remains the biggest drag on China's growth," wrote Song, adding that stabilization in the real estate market remains "elusive." China's economy is being dragged by factors including a property crisis, high youth unemployment, and deflation. He added that he expects Beijing to continue to do more to support growth so the economy can enter 2025 on better footing.

Where are Gen Z's tech founders?

So where are Gen Z's tech founders? Gen Z founders and would-be founders are stepping into a vastly different tech world from that of their predecessors — a world where launching a unicorn is far more difficult, and publicly scrutinized, than it was for the garage-band generation of Jobs and Gates. Gen Z is coming of age in an era when the same Big Tech companies are diffuse and dominant. In other words, millennial founders ran so that Gen Z founders could walk. Perhaps we won't see Gen Z founders standing before a crowd and unveiling their latest shiny products anytime soon.
