Research in 2011 by Visit Britain found that around 60% of tourists to the UK are likely to visit places associated with the royal family, according to Ross Bennett-Cook, a visiting lecturer at the School of Architecture and Cities at London’s University of Westminster. While there is no more recent data on royal sites specifically, in 2022 Visit Britain found that history and heritage were the biggest pull factors for tourists. London CNN —Britain’s security services are quietly relieved that the coronation of King Charles III passed without major incident – save for some accusations of heavy-handed policing. On the face of it, the stakes associated with the grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest would not appear to be particularly high. For that reason, British security officials are more exercised than they might otherwise have been about a kitschy musical competition. “On one hand you have thousands of people enjoying the nightlife, which means potential of physical targets and organized crime. This year’s event is, at its heart, a partnership between the UK and Ukraine, two major thorns in the Kremlin’s side.

CNN —Prince Louis, the youngest child of the Prince and Princess of Wales, has undertaken his first royal engagement at the age of five. The Wales family joined the scouts to renovate their scout hut. Prince George, nine, and Princess Charlotte, eight, were seen painting a porch. Prince Louis, dressed in blue shorts and a blue polo shirt, joined his father on a digger and helped fill a wheelbarrow with sand. Prince Louis pushed a loaded wheelbarrow while his mother and sister -- the Princess of Wales and Princess Charlotte -- watched on.

In a widely-anticipated industry consultation launched Tuesday, the government proposed a number of measures aimed at bringing regulation of crypto asset businesses in line with that of traditional financial firms. A big theme that emerged in 2022 was the rise of risky loans made between multiple crypto firms and a lack of due diligence done on the counterparties involved in those transactions. The collapse of FTX has added urgency to global regulators' attempts to govern the regulation-averse crypto space. The regulatory move comes as crypto firms in both the U.K. and beyond are feeling the chill of a deep downturn known as "crypto winter." LONDON — Embattled British Prime Minister Liz Truss fired her finance minister and abandoned a flagship policy Friday, in a bid to save her job after her economic plan stoked weeks of market panic. Earlier, Truss removed Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng just 38 days after the pair took power. Kwarteng becomes the second shortest-serving chancellor of the exchequer, as the British finance minister is known. Truss' personal office confirmed the next finance minister will be Jeremy Hunt, a former health secretary and minister under successive Conservative governments. Crucially, the bank’s bond-buying program is set to end Friday, meaning the government must convince markets its economic plan is sound to avoid further chaos.

But many campaigners believe King Charles III presents a unique opportunity: They think most royalism was actually fondness for the widely loved queen, and he — a new, less popular king — won't inherit this support. The English Civil War resulted in the beheading of King Charles I, before the "Glorious Revolution" saw English elites effectively choose a new monarch who gave lawmakers more rights.
