UK lawmakers vote to allow assisted dying
  + stars: | 2024-11-29 | by ( Rob Picheta | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
London CNN —British members of parliament have voted to legalize assisted dying, approving a contentious proposal that would make the United Kingdom one of a small handful of nations to allow terminally ill people to end their lives. The bill must still clear the House of Lords and parliamentary committees, but Friday’s vote marked the most important hurdle. Canada, New Zealand, Spain and most of Australia allow assisted dying in some form, as do several US states including Oregon, Washington and California. MPs were given a free vote on the issue, meaning they can support either side according to their conscience, with no political ramifications. Polling indicates that a comfortable majority of the public supports assisted dying.

British lawmakers give initial support to assisted dying bill

The Houses of Parliament are seen on June 28, 2024 in London, England ahead of the UK general election. Britain's parliament voted in favor of a new bill to legalize assisted dying on Friday, opening the way for months of further debate over an issue that has sparked a national conversation over dignity in death and end-of-life care. "There's plenty of time to get this right," she said after more than four hours of often emotional debate in the chamber. Those in favor of the bill say it is about shortening the death of those who are terminally ill and giving them more control. Others expressed concern that there had not been enough time to consider the bill before voting.

Meditating is a proven way to reduce stress, improve sleep and keep you engaged in your work and relationships. While a regular meditation practice might sound intimidating, it can actually be quite simple and take up very little of your day, according to Dr. Esther Sternberg . "You do that a few times, and that will immediately put a brake on the stress response," Sternberg says. The goal of the practice is to "feel gratitude for everything you see, all the trees, all the houses, whatever you see, feel gratitude, and feel gratitude for your loved ones." "When you're in a compassion state, you're releasing dopamine, you're releasing endorphins, all these feel-good molecules," she says.

5 big questions about how tech will look under Trump
  + stars: | 2024-11-29 | by ( Clare Duffy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
He sought to swat down legal protections for tech platforms. Many Republicans are eager to see the Trump administration address what they see as “censorship” of right-leaning voices by many mainstream social media platforms. That could mean reforming or reinterpreting Section 230, which shields tech platforms from liability for their users’ posts and allows the platforms to moderate content as they see fit. In essence, Carr could attempt to pass a rule that would make it possible to sue tech platforms under that new interpretation. Ultimately, that could mean hamstringing tech companies’ efforts to reduce hateful or false content on their platforms.

Alice Hudson, who, after enrolling in a mandatory geography course in college, took a detour from her plan to become a professional translator and went on to devote her career to building one of the world’s premier public map collections, died on Nov. 6 in Manhattan. Her death, in a senior living facility, was apparently caused by complications of kidney disease, said Robert Trager, her nephew. Ms. Hudson was chief of the Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division of the New York Public Library from 1981 to 2009, presiding over what has been called the most heavily used public map room in the world. She oversaw the doubling of the collection, to more than 400,000 maps and 24,000 atlases, rivaling the holdings of the Library of Congress, the National Archives and the British Library. She mounted exhibitions on how topography influenced history on the American frontier and along New York City’s shoreline, and illuminated the overlooked contribution of women to cartography.

A poor young poet is struggling to write in his attic apartment when he is interrupted by the sickly seamstress who lives downstairs. Barely 15 minutes later, these two strangers are singing ecstatically about their love. But when a performance of Giacomo Puccini’s “La Bohème” is working its hot magic, nothing could be more believable. And nothing could be more essentially operatic than such a scene, with the emotions compressed and heightened through music. Puccini, who died 100 years ago, on Nov. 29, 1924, proved himself again and again a master of moments like this: unleashing a Technicolor extravagance of feeling while at the same time conveying plain, simple truth.
