Now that I'm older, I'm learning to accept my body. But after 25 years of regular gym time, I'm finally OK with not looking like an Adonis. My primary health goal was to look good naked. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that "look good naked" can translate to "voluntary starvation." So, while I've never managed to look like a fitness model, I now realize that I still look pretty good for my age.

Lonodn CNN —Some toymakers are “flooding” Europe with dangerous toys via online marketplaces, including magnets capable of puncturing a child’s intestines if swallowed and products containing toxic chemicals, according to an industry body. An Amazon spokesperson said the company has “proactive measures in place to prevent unsafe or non-compliant products from being listed” on its site. The EU has the “strictest toy safety regime in the world” but toymakers from outside the bloc are exempt from EU rules when selling their products via online marketplaces, TIE said. Because of higher costs, employers are considering new ways to adjust their plan offerings, WTW found. Currently, employers subsidize about 81% of health-care plan costs, on average, while employees pay the remainder, according to professional services firm Aon. For workers, health-care expenses are already high: Family premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance rose 7% this year to an average of $25,572, KFF's 2024 benchmark employer health survey found. Health savings accountsAlong with a high-deductible health insurance plan, more than 50% of employers also offer a health savings account, or HSA, which can help with additional health-care costs. This is called supplemental life insurance, or voluntary life insurance, and it's optional coverage that you can add to your employer's basic group policy.

After a decade of unfulfilled promises about driverless vehicles, Tesla CEO Elon Musk hyped the company’s Cybercab concept on Thursday night, showing off a low, silver two-seater with no steering wheels or pedals. Musk offered no details about exactly where Tesla plans to produce the cars, but said consumers would be able to buy a Tesla Cybercab for below $30,000. He said the Cybercab and Robovan would employ inductive charging, meaning these autonomous vehicles could roll up to a station to recharge, with no plugging in required. Musk has spent years touting Tesla’s work in autonomous cars and promising that they would hit the market. In 2015, Musk told shareholders that Tesla cars would achieve “full autonomy” within three years.

But there's one hiccup: your retirement savings rate could fall behind and the opportunity costs could pile up. The reason is that the most common default savings rate was quite low, at only 3%. Those who saw a raise below 10% saw a drop in their savings rate and the dollar amount they saved. Those lucky enough to snag an increase above 10%, still ended up with a higher dollar amount saved even with a lower savings rate. For passive savers who are stuck in their ways, it may be up to employers to make the adjustments by increasing the default savings rate.

Aerial view of the capital city of Seoul in South Korea, seen at sunset. South Korea's factory activity contracted at the sharpest pace in 15 months in September as overseas demand slowed for the first time in the year, a private survey showed on Wednesday, suggesting a slow road to a full-blown economic recovery. Output and new orders shrank in September, after gaining for five straight months, with the steepest slump in 11 months and 15 months, respectively. Specifically, export sales to China, Japan, India and the United States weakened, according to the survey. The survey showed backlogs of work, an indicator of near-term activity, fell by the most in five months, while optimism for the year ahead weakened sharply to the lowest level since December 2022.

CNN —The number of available jobs in the US grew in August, signaling an undercurrent of strength in the labor market at a time when its vitals are being carefully monitored by the Federal Reserve. There were an estimated 8.04 million job openings in August, up from an upwardly revised 7.71 million in July, according to new data released Wednesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey report kicks off a week chock-full of critical economic data for the US labor market, culminating with the Friday jobs report. The health of the job market has leap-frogged inflation to become the top concern for the Fed, which cut its benchmark interest rate last month for the first time in four years. Alternatively, available jobs shrank across many service sectors, including finance, and arts and entertainment.

California governor vetoes contentious AI safety bill
  + stars: | 2024-09-29 | by ( Story Reuters | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Reuters —California Governor Gavin Newsom on Sunday vetoed a hotly contested artificial intelligence safety bill, after the tech industry raised objections, saying it could drive AI companies from the state and hinder innovation. The AI industry is growing fast in California and some leaders questioned the future of these companies in the state if the bill became law. Developers of AI software operating in the state would have also needed to outline methods for turning off the AI models, effectively a kill switch. Alphabet’s Google, Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Meta Platforms, all of which are developing generative AI models, had expressed their concerns about the proposal. Newsom separately signed legislation requiring the state to assess potential threats posed by Generative AI to California’s critical infrastructure.

The OPEC+ alliance is once more cracking down on group compliance with oil output cuts, as it presses ahead with a three-pronged plan of formal and voluntary production trims. Eight OPEC+ members, including kingpin Saudi Arabia, were due to begin returning 2.2 million barrels per day of voluntary cuts to the market starting in October. Earlier this month, they postponed this phaseout to start in December instead. OPEC+ nations are operating two other production declines: under official policy, they will produce a combined 39.725 million bpd next year. U.S. District Judge Edward Chen in San Francisco on Tuesday sided with several advocacy groups, finding the current practice of adding fluoride to drinking water supplies to fight cavities presented unreasonable risks for children’s developing brains. But the judge stressed he was not concluding with certainty that fluoridated water endangered public health. The agency had denied their so-called citizen’s petition asking it to consider banning fluoridation chemicals from public drinking water. More than 200 million Americans, or about 75% of the population, currently have fluoride added to their drinking water at recommended levels of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water. The U.S. practice differs from Europe, where fluoridated drinking water is rare.
