In Justin Verlander’s first start of the season, he pitched like an ace. And no, the Mets did not win. In a season in which the starting rotations of both New York teams have seemed almost cursed by injuries and ineffectiveness, that was enough to find a ray of sunshine. “You saw his stuff, so to speak, and velocity and crispness kind of get better as the game went on,” Mets Manager Buck Showalter said after the game. “I could tell he was getting after it the last inning.”

Since buying the Mets, Steve Cohen has developed an approachable reputation. After buying the Mets in 2020, he said his goal is to win a championship in three to five years. The team's spending on pay has been so aggressive that the league imposed new costs, or a so-called "Cohen tax". Still, he bought the Mets to win, not to make money, he has said. To read more about how Cohen went from hedge fund shark to the sentimental owner to the New York Mets, read Insider's 2021 piece:
LAS VEGAS — Major League Baseball’s front offices began placing bets on their offseason roster-building moves, with some teams focused not on landing new talent, but hanging onto the stars they have—including Jacob deGrom, Justin Verlander and especially Aaron Judge. The league’s General Manager meetings here this week are the first of two official gatherings of club and league representatives this winter; the Winter Meetings, the industry-wide convention that takes place in December, will be the second.

Justin Verlander is one of the game’s elite pitchers, and maybe the umpire is giving him the benefit of the doubt on this one. Regardless, it should have been called a ball. Bryce Harper was ready to trot to first base with a walk, but he ended up there anyway. Your browser does not support the video tag. ; pitch paths by The New York Times
