Three U.S.-based academics won the 2024 Nobel economics prize on Monday for their research into why global inequality persists, especially in countries dogged by corruption and dictatorship. The laureates have demonstrated the importance of societal institutions for achieving this,” said Jakob Svensson, Chair of the Committee for the Prize in Economic Sciences. Last year, Harvard economic historian Claudia Goldin won the prize for her work highlighting the causes of wage and labour market inequality between men and women. In 2019, economists Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer won the award for work on fighting poverty. The economics prize has been dominated by U.S. academics since its inception, while U.S.-based researchers also tend to account for a large portion of winners in the scientific fields for which 2024 laureates were announced last week.

CNN —The Nigeria men’s soccer team is back home after being stuck at a remote Libyan airport for over 15 hours, according to Nigeria’s football governing body and team captain William Troost-Ekong. In an Instagram post, the NFF said that the squad was stranded overnight at Al Abraq airport outside of Al Bayda, Libya. “We understand the Al Abraq International Airport is only used for hajj operations. They’ve locked the airport gates and left us without phone connection, food or drink. But never on purpose!”Later on Monday, Troost-Ekong said the team had traveled back to Nigeria.

However, we do agree with Evercore's optimism on AI iPhone integration, and its ability to usher in an upgrade cycle for Apple's flagship device. But with our "own it, don't trade it" view still intact on Apple stock, it's acceptable for the upgrade cycle to get off to a slower start. The man who died in a Colorado mine elevator accident was a 46-year-old father and tour guide there, officials said Friday as investigators try to understand what exactly occurred. The man killed was identified as Patrick Weier, who worked as a tour guide at the mine. Weier had a 7-year-old son and lived in Victor, a community of less than 400 in the area, officials said. Mikesell said the state does safety inspections and an official from that agency was on scene after the accident Thursday. “I know it has passed its safety inspections,” Mikesell said, but he did not have the dates during Friday’s news conference.
