She was more distant in my adulthood, as Barbie had become a subject of feminist concern. I followed many authors, artists, musicians and assorted culture jammers who were publicly working out their own Barbie issues in fascinating ways. However we feel about Barbie at a given moment says a lot more about us than it does about Barbie. Mattel’s litigious responses to things like the 1998 intersectional feminist body-image essay collection “Adios, Barbie” and Aqua’s gratingly ubiquitous earworm “Barbie Girl” didn’t help its P.R. It’s a fitting approach, since the most interesting thing about Barbie has always been our reactions to her.

Hundreds of people may have died last week in the Mediterranean, after a boat overloaded with migrants, including many children, capsized and sank. It was one of the deadliest migrant disasters in years. And, indeed, Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president, said Greece’s border enforcement was Europe’s “shield,” because its harsh tactics prevent migrants from reaching E.U. “This border is not only a Greek border, it is also a European border,” she said after Greece used tear gas to repel hundreds of people who were trying to cross over from Turkey. The European Union has gone to even greater extremes to deter migrants.

America Is ... We asked 17 columnists topick the one piece of culture thatbest captures the country. The show had grand ambitions: Jeff Probst, the host, repeatedly referred to “Survivor” as “the greatest social experiment.”Scroll to watch and read moreIt’s also a uniquely American experiment. Most strikingly, the show takes on — admittedly, in a ham-fisted way — the biggest divides in American society: gender, sexuality, race, age, class. One of the most admired and rewarded feats on “Survivor” is the blindside: voting off someone who thinks you are an ally. “Survivor” reminds us that living in our panopticon, with cameras in every pocket, we are content creators all, delivering a performance of ourselves.

The naturalization exam is a crucial step to an immigrant’s path toward US citizenship, potentially impacting hundreds of thousands of immigrants who seek citizenship annually. The trial civics portion is expected to be redesigned in a multiple-choice format, instead of it being fill in the blank. Currently, applicants study 100 civics test items and are required to answer six of 10 civics questions correctly to pass. The citizenship test was a target of the Trump administration, which tried to curtail legal immigration and doubled down on citizenship. Last year, the Biden administration rolled back the controversial Trump-era naturalization civics test, reverting to a prior version of the exam.

My wife, Melissa Forrest, and I run an Airbnb business together and have taught hundreds of others how to do the same. We've learned that by recognizing red flags in a guest's booking request, we can keep our properties booked with great guests that respect the neighborhood and our homes. Their booking request is full of spelling and grammar issuesAnother red flag is getting requests from guests that look like a text message. Airbnb typically confirms this verbally on the phone, saying that because we have this written in our house rules, guests know what to expect. Do you run a successful Airbnb business and have a story to tell?
