Last week, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business launched the Booth Family Office Initiative, a combination of research programs, courses and summits aimed at current and future family office executives. Business schools at Harvard, Columbia, Northwestern, Pepperdine and other universities have started offering courses aimed at family offices or family-owned companies. For family offices, the programs can help train the next generation of family office leaders at a time when talent is scarce and family offices are battling for experienced investors, accountants, lawyers and estate planners. The number of family offices has grown to more than 8,000 from about 6,000 in 2019, according to Deloitte. According to the lawsuit, these universities bilked applicants from divorced or separated homes by including the financial backgrounds of noncustodial parents when determining financial aid packages. The universities engaged in “a concerted action” to require that an applicant’s noncustodial parents, meaning the parent a student does not primarily live with, provide their financial information to be eligible for nonfederal financial aid, the lawsuit states. The universities generated financial aid offers based on an applicant’s custodial and noncustodial parents’ financial statuses. The College Board’s push to include noncustodial parents’ financial information began in 2006, the lawsuit says, and never included consideration for whether that parent would contribute to a student’s education. “This lawsuit has no merit and NYU intends to vigorously defend itself and its financial aid policies and procedures,” NYU spokesperson John Beckman said in a statement.

Panera Bread has settled with the family of an Ivy League student with a heart condition who died after drinking the chain’s highly caffeinated Charged Lemonade drink. The suit said that Katz bought a Charged Lemonade from a Panera restaurant in September 2022. A second lawsuit blamed it for a Florida man’s death while the other two alleged that the Charged Lemonade caused permanent heart injuries in previously healthy people. The complaint said the Charged Lemonade also had guarana extract, another stimulant, as well as the equivalent of nearly 30 teaspoons of sugar in the large size. It also added prominent signs cautioning that Charged Lemonade contained caffeine, should be consumed in moderation and was not recommended for children, people sensitive to caffeine, pregnant or nursing women.

PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania law school says it is imposing a one-year suspension at half-pay and other sanctions along with a public reprimand on a tenured professor over her comments about race in recent years. The university said Professor Amy Wax — who has questioned the academic performance of Black students, invited a white nationalist to speak to her class and suggested the country would be better off with less Asian immigration — will also lose her named chair and summer pay in perpetuity and must note in public appearances that she speaks for herself, not as a university or law school member. But now, as the dangers of a widening deficit and mounting debt grow, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are making little effort to address it. A budget deficit occurs when a country’s spending exceeds what it collects in revenue, primarily through taxes. The deficit is expected to widen under the status quo and could get even worse under proposals by both Harris and Trump, if enacted. During the Trump-Harris presidential debate earlier this month, the budget deficit was mentioned just twice, when Harris jabbed Trump for his proposals, which are expected to add considerably more to the deficit than hers. In the 2021 fiscal year, during which Trump left office, the country ran a $2.8 trillion deficit.
