"I look at what you do," Trump said to Musk during a two-hour interview Monday night on X, the social media platform Musk owns. They go on strike," Trump said to Musk, who also is CEO of the EV car maker Tesla and of SpaceX. So, every one of you is gone,'" Trump said. CNN —The United Auto Workers union on Tuesday filed federal labor charges against former President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk for threatening to intimidate workers who go on strike. Trump called Musk “the cutter,” and praised Musk for his anti-union stances. “Both Trump and Musk want working class people to sit down and shut up, and they laugh about it openly. But it’s not clear that Trump was referencing any specific workers Musk fired for organizing against his company. Harris’ campaign circulated the clip of Trump and Musk, saying: “Trump praises billionaire Elon Musk for firing workers who were striking for better pay and working conditions.”

For weeks, the signs did not look good for Kamala Harris in Michigan. The leader of a well-to-do neighborhood association told me that the way Ms. Harris got nominated resembled “entrapment.” And, at a street fair, I chatted with Tamika Daniels, an activist who was working to register formerly incarcerated people to vote. Ms. Daniels expressed skepticism about Ms. Harris because the vice president had once been a prosecutor. There was no sign of such skepticism at the Harris rally near the Detroit airport last Wednesday, where roughly 15,000 excited people waited hours to see her. If the Harris campaign is unable to address this thorny issue in a way that feels like substance, then Democrats may not get the unity they’ll need to win in November.

What comes next could hinge on who gets to oversee labor relations after the election. The National Labor Relations Board — which polices unfair labor practices and mediates worker-management disputes — has become an aggressive union booster under Biden. While the agency’s policies typically shift depending on who’s in the White House, the change has been pronounced, labor experts and former NLRB staffers say. Before joining the law firm in 2022, White worked for a decade at a regional NLRB field office under the Obama, Trump and Biden administrations. Last year, the NLRB overturned a 50-year precedent, requiring employers to recognize a union if most workers sign authorization cards for one.

DETROIT — Automaker Stellantis plans to indefinitely lay off up to 2,450 U.S. factory workers later this year as it discontinues production of an older version of its Ram 1500 pickup truck in Michigan. It is produced alongside the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant, located near Detroit. The current Ram 1500, which was recently updated for the 2025 model year, is produced at a nearby plant. “With the introduction of the new Ram 1500, production of the Ram 1500 Classic at the Warren [Michigan] Truck Assembly Plant will come to an end later this year,” the company said in an emailed statement. The discontinuation of the Ram 1500 “Classic” vehicle is not unexpected, but the company has not announced a vehicle to replace the truck.

CNN —Chrysler-parent Stellantis is laying off as many as 2,450 factory workers from its Warren Truck assembly plant outside of Detroit as the automaker ends production of the Ram 1500 Classic truck. Production of the Jeep Wagoneer at the same facility will remain on two shifts, the company said. As production of the Ram 1500 Classic winds down later this year, the company is shifting focus to the Ram 1500 Tradesman truck, produced at its Sterling Heights Assembly facility. “We introduced the new 2025 Ram 1500 Tradesman with incredible value and content. Joe Raedle | Getty ImagesFormer President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have agreed to a debate on Sept. 10 hosted by ABC News, both presidential nominees said Thursday. Trump said CBS News will host a vice presidential debate between his running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, and Harris' running mate, Minnesota Gov. Joe Raedle | Getty ImagesNBC has pitched both campaigns multiple potential dates for a presidential debate, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC. Trump's campaign agreed to Sept. 25 but the Harris campaign has yet to agree to that date, the person said. Harris since then had taunted Trump for refusing to commit to the ABC debate, whose Sept. 10 date was set originally for Trump to debate President Joe Biden, who dropped out of the election last month.

A ‘harsh reality’ for EVsFord likes to brag about its growing EV sales, but its profit is still primarily coming from the sales of gasoline powered trucks and SUVs. Ford isn’t the only automaker pulling back on its EV plans and making new investment in ICE vehicles. This is not to say that the traditional automakers are dropping their EV plans altogether or that EV sales are falling. But EV sales, which initially grew at a double-digit pace, haven’t shot up exponentially as automakers hoped or expected. That uncertainty about the future of US EV incentives prompted automakers to reconsider their earlier EV plans.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris is making the biggest decision of her two-week-old presidential campaign as she chooses a running mate and prepares to introduce the new Democratic ticket to voters in several key battleground states this week. The whirlwind vice presidential search entered its final hours Sunday after Harris had interviewed three final contenders — Gov. It was four years ago this week that Biden announced his decision to choose Harris as his running mate. Brian Kemp, who revealed last month that he did not support Trump in the state’s GOP primary. Progressive groups have trained their criticisms on Mr. Shapiro and Mr. Kelly, who they accuse of being too conservative on key issues. The debate grew heated during a discussion about whether using the phrase “Genocide Josh” to describe Mr. Shapiro, who is an observant Jew, was antisemitic. One of his advisers called the Harris campaign to object to Mr. Shapiro, a development that was first reported by Politico. Manuel Bonder, a spokesman for Mr. Shapiro, declined to comment on the vice-presidential selection process. Mr. Walz and Mr. Beshear are set to appear at dueling, simultaneous fund-raisers to benefit Ms. Harris on Monday evening.

Since Harris kicked off her presidential campaign, there’s been a string of good news for the US economy. Harris will have Biden’s mostly strong economy to run on. By June 2021, Biden’s sixth month in office, the nation’s inflation rate jumped to more than 5%. After the Federal Reserve hiked interest rate hikes to a 23-year high to stamp out inflation, the economy — eventually — started to run at a slower pace. The Biden administration canceled $168 billion in student loan debt for 4.8 million Americans.

Over the past few years, as major manufacturers have announced plans to ramp up production in Mexico, labor unions have raised concerns that American jobs will be sent abroad. Now, the concerns have prompted the United Automobile Workers union, a prominent backer of President Biden, to criticize an administration decision not to pursue accusations of labor abuses by a Mexican subsidiary of Caterpillar, the agriculture equipment maker. In late June, the administration informed a group of unions that it would not pursue a complaint that the subsidiary had retaliated against striking union members by making it difficult for them to find alternative employment, a form of blacklisting. The government’s ability to police such violations, under a provision of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the successor to the North American Free Trade Agreement, is meant to reduce the incentive for American employers to move jobs to Mexico in search of weaker labor protections. argues that, by declining to use its authority under the trade agreement in this case, the Biden administration may be encouraging companies to relocate work.

Fain and the UAW, which endorsed Biden in January, are important allies of Biden and are expected to play a critical role in helping Biden win in key swing states including Michigan, where the UAW is based. Fain, who announced the UAW's endorsement of Biden in January, has repeatedly rebuked Trump, the Republican former president. "Donald Trump stands against everything we stand for as a society," Fain said in his January endorsement of Biden. Fain also received a mention from Biden at this year's State of the Union address, which Fain attended. CNN —United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain and other members of the union’s board have expressed concerns about President Joe Biden’s ability to beat Donald Trump in November, a source close to the union says. The union is discussing the way forward on how to beat Trump in November, but the group is not considering rescinding its endorsement of Biden at this time, the source added. When a reporter at a Thursday press conference raised the UAW’s concerns, the president responded, “The UAW just endorsed me.”“There’s a long way to go this campaign,” the president later added. In a statement Wednesday, the day Biden visited the group, the AFL-CIO executive council said in a statement: “The labor movement understands, as Joe Biden does, that solidarity is how we win. “I said I was going to be the most pro union president in American history, well guess what I am,” Biden said Wednesday.

A court-appointed monitor disclosed on Monday that he was investigating accusations that the president of the United Automobile Workers union retaliated against a vice president for resisting actions that would have benefited the president’s domestic partner and her sister. The monitor made the disclosure in a court filing seeking access to internal union documents as part of an investigation that began in February into potential financial misconduct. Since then, the monitor and the union have clashed over how much access the monitor should have to union documents, and the pace at which the union has produced them. In Monday’s filing, the monitor, Neil Barofsky, sought an order granting him extensive access. The monitor was appointed as part of a 2021 consent decree that ended a federal corruption case against the union.
