The US Navy has been burning through interceptors fighting in Middle East conflicts, including the valuable SM-3. AdvertisementUS Navy warships have twice been called upon to defend Israel from massive Iranian ballistic missile attacks and have used SM-3 interceptors to defeat the incoming threats. But it's not just the SM-3 that the Navy is using up battling foes in the Middle East. In a short-range engagement, China's missiles wouldn't need to travel as high, and they would likely have shorter flight times and travel at slower speeds. And the number of Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles, long-range cruise missiles designed by RTX, being produced has decreased annually as well.

But it doesn’t mean that scientists aren’t interested in bringing the past back to life in some form. Dig thisThe tree, which the study authors believe may have a biblical connection, is seen at 12 years old. Remarkably, the tree thrived and now stands 10 feet (3 meters) tall, although it has never flowered or produced fruit. Using DNA sequencing, the researchers identified the mystery tree as part of the Commiphora genus, but its exact species is unknown and likely extinct. Scientists aim to extract DNA from the remains to learn more about those buried there and whether they were related.

US Navy warships defending Israel from Iran's missile attack on Tuesday fired SM-3 interceptors. The SM-3 scored its first-ever kill while defending Israel in April from an Iranian bombardment. AdvertisementThe US Navy warships that engaged a massive barrage of Iranian ballistic missiles in defense of Israel on Tuesday fired SM-3 interceptors, a weapon that scored its first-ever kill earlier this year. Two destroyers operating in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea fired around a dozen interceptors at the Iranian missiles, a number of which were shot down. A Navy official confirmed to Business Insider on Thursday that the destroyers fired the Standard Missile 3, or SM-3, during the battle.

"Iran uses ballistic missiles as a replacement for aircraft," a regional expert said. Iran used more ballistic missiles than the 120 it launched during its April barrage, its first direct attack on Israel. Iran has also shown a preference for firing ballistic missiles against less-defended targets closer to home. Since 2017, Iran has also used its ballistic missiles against ISIS in Syria, following terrorist attacks in Iran and, on one occasion, alleged militant targets in Pakistan. In January 2024, Tehran even used ballistic missiles to destroy a businessman's residence in neighboring Iraqi Kurdistan.

CNN —The wreck of a US Navy destroyer known as the “Ghost Ship of the Pacific” has been found off the coast of California by undersea investigators. The statement came a day after the US Coast Guard said it spotted four vessels from the Russian Border Guard and Chinese Coast Guard in the Bering Sea – the “northernmost” location it said it had ever observed the Chinese ships. In 2008, Israel killed Hezbollah’s military leader, Imad Mughniyeh, in Damascus, Syria, yet the group only gathered strength in the years that followed. CNN —China’s newest nuclear-powered submarine sank pierside in the spring and the Chinese Navy tried to conceal the loss, according to two US defense officials. The attack submarine was the first of its new Zhou-class line of vessels, the official said, under construction at a shipyard near the city of Wuhan. “It’s not surprising that the PLA Navy would try to conceal the fact that their new first-in-class nuclear-powered attack submarine sank pierside,” said the senior US defense official. According to the latest China military power report from 2023, the PLA Navy operates six nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, six nuclear-powered attack submarines, and 48 diesel-powered attack submarines. The PLA Navy has 370 platforms, which includes 234 warships, according to CRS, while the US has 219 warships.

Read previewThe US military has published photos for the first time that show a fifth-generation F-35 fighter armed with a stealthy long-range anti-ship missile. The photo, released on Monday, shows an F-35C Lightning II carrying two AGM-158C Long-Range Anti-Ship Missiles (LRASMs) during a flight test conducted earlier this month. Efforts to integrate the missile with the carrier-based variant of the advanced F-35 stealth fighter underscore the military's push to expand its anti-ship capabilities across new platforms. The military has acknowledged an increasing need for these capabilities, particularly as rivals like China strengthen their navies. The F-35 doesn't have a dedicated anti-ship missile, making the LRASM a valuable addition.
