The lawsuit accused the companies of lying to investors and covering up more than $1 billion in losses. According to the latest lawsuit, Gemini knew that Genesis’ loans were risky and, at one point, “highly concentrated” with Bankman-Fried’s crypto trading house Alameda Research. “Gemini hid the risks of investing with Genesis, and Genesis lied to the public about its losses,” James said. Gemini’s owners, the Winklevoss twins, have said Genesis owed more than $900 million to some 340,000 customers using the Earn program. The AG’s lawsuit follows another civil action brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission, which in January sued Genesis and Gemini for offering unregistered securities through the Earn product.

Crypto firms Digital Currency Group and Gemini defrauded more than 230,000 investors out of a collective $1.1 billion, New York state prosecutors said in a lawsuit filed in Manhattan Thursday. They cited a series of missteps, including failure to adequately manage the risk associated with exposure to Sam Bankman-Fried's bankrupt and allegedly fraudulent crypto trading firm. For a time, it was very lucrative, until crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital defaulted on its loans and sent much of the crypto world into tumult. Gemini would then give Genesis that customer crypto for further lending, collecting a slice of Genesis' interest. By extension, prosecutors say, that meant that Gemini also had exposure to Alameda — and allegedly knew they did.

[1/2] Republican presidential candidate and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie speaks at the New Hampshire Republican Party’s First in the Nation Leadership Summit in Nashua, New Hampshire, U.S., October 13, 2023. Several hedge fund rainmakers poured cash into Chris Christie’s campaign over the summer, according to filings released on Monday. But with legal woes hanging over Trump’s campaign, contributions to the most anti-Trump conservative could become a valuable call option for the group that knows something about hedging. It’s notable that Christie has been vocal about attacking Trump, whom he advised during the prior president’s first term. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie raised $3.8 million over the quarter, aided by donations from wealthy investors including Stanley Druckenmiller, David Tepper and Paul Tudor Jones.

Entrepreneurs who left the corporate world to start businesses told Insider how they made the leap. They shared the financial steps they took, such as paying down debt and building an emergency fund. Ludomir Wanot, who quit a six-figure job at Amazon to build a real-estate-wholesaling business, took stock of his personal finances as he was preparing to leave corporate America. Steph Gordon and Den Mathu, a couple in Toronto, also considered their personal finances before quitting their corporate jobs to create online content full-time. Marks celebrates winning the world title at Lower Trestles in California. Pat Nolan/World Surf League/Getty Images“I feel like I had a special connection with the ocean already that day, and my board felt amazing,” says Marks. But for Marks, winning the world title was the culmination of years of hard work, a goal that had formed in her mind even before she became the youngest surfer to qualify for the Championship Tour aged 15. But this year’s world title, Marks says, was even more satisfying after last season’s four-month absence from competitions. “The world title to me was my biggest goal ever,” says Marks, who won the Tahiti Pro event in August.

CNN —Since Lionel Messi’s arrival at Inter Miami, the club has experienced a turnaround in its fortunes, going unbeaten in 11 games after a nine-game winless streak. But that all changed on Saturday as Inter Miami sunk to a 5-2 defeat against Atlanta United, after taking to the field without Messi who was rested for the first time since signing for the club in July. Inter Miami scored first following a superb Leonardo Campana goal in the 25th minute, as he controlled the ball with his chest, chipped it over a defender, and volleyed it into the net. Inter Miami conceded five goals, including an own goal. “Honestly, I told the players, there are a lot of things out there in the atmosphere and everything seems to be about Inter Miami,” he said, according to ESPN.

CNN —American surfer Caroline Marks won her first world title on Saturday, defeating Olympic champion and five-time world champion Carissa Moore. On her way to the World Surf League final, the 21-year-old defeated fellow American Caitlin Simmers and Australia’s Tyler Wright before taking on Moore in the gold-medal match. “There’s definitely going to be a massive party after this and everyone is invited!” Marks told the WSL afterwards. Pat Nolan/World Surf League/Getty ImagesMarks became just the fourth women’s world champion in the last 15 years, after Moore, Wright and Stephanie Gilmore have dominated the sport. Sept 9 (Reuters) - American surfer Caroline Marks powered her way to her first world title on Saturday, while Brazil's Filipe Toledo went back-to-back to claim his second championship with a hard-fought win over surprise finalist Ethan Ewing from Australia. Toledo, however, showed once again his mastery of his adopted home break, combining his own searing turns with high-risk aerials to edge Ewing 2-0 and retain his title. Marks, already a five-year world tour veteran at 21, overcame Hawaii's five-time world champion and Olympic gold medallist Carissa Moore in the women's final. Everyone from Florida and from San Clemente has been supporting me, I just can't believe it," Marks said after her win. The win breaks the stranglehold that Moore, Wright and Australia's Steph Gilmore have had on the world title since 2007, and confirms Marks' place alongside Moore in the U.S. surfing team for the Paris Olympics in Tahiti next year.

Washington CNN —President Joe Biden is preparing to blanket the airwaves with a $25 million television and digital ad campaign in battleground states this month, campaign officials told CNN, as Republicans are set to face off in their first presidential primary debate. That same poll found only 37% of Americans approve of Biden’s handling of the economy and even fewer – 30% – approve of his handling of inflation. Biden’s ad push, which will include several forthcoming ads, will run for 16 weeks on broadcast and cable television in the battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North, Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, officials said. Still, the Biden campaign is taking steps to tie the GOP candidates on stage to Trump’s “MAGA” agenda” on both the airwaves and on the ground in Wisconsin, campaign officials said. In Washington, the DNC and the Biden campaign will set up a messaging “war room” to provide rapid response throughout the debate.

A man who told the authorities that he had set fire to a Planned Parenthood clinic in Illinois after being reminded of an ex-girlfriend who he said had an abortion against his wishes was sentenced on Tuesday to 10 years in prison. After he completes his sentence, Mr. Massengill will be on supervised release for three years, according to court records. Surveillance video footage led the police to Mr. Massengill, who initially denied that he had set the fire but later admitted that he had broken a window at the clinic and placed a burning container inside, the complaint said. Mr. Massengill told investigators that on the day of the fire, something had reminded him about an ex-girlfriend who he said had chosen to have an abortion, which upset him. He told the authorities that if the fire had caused “a little delay” in someone receiving care at the clinic then it would have been “all worth it,” the complaint said.

The harmonic convergence between the resurrected Jason Heyward and the rampaging Los Angeles Dodgers crystallized beautifully one evening in Baltimore last month. It was in the top of the second inning at Camden Yards when Heyward smashed a three-run home run off the right-hander Tyler Wells, opening the gates to a five-run inning. And the Dodgers, being the Dodgers, adjusted accordingly. “I told him the situation, that my bet was that they were going to use a lefty the rest of the way,” said Manager Dave Roberts. “I told him, ‘You did your job to help us win this game.’ And he was like, ‘Doc, I’m in.’”

Chris Pizzello/APThis summer, scorching heat waves are helping take the movie box office to new levels. Movie-theater air conditioning is generally silent, powerful and adapts quickly to temperature swings. Within 5 years of the introduction of air conditioning in movie theaters in the 1920s, Basile said, 3,000 movie theaters were forced to put it in just to keep up with the industry. “Before air conditioning existed in movie theaters, summer was considered the dead season.” Not anymore.

If you're thinking about starting an e-commerce business, you need to first pick a product to sell. That's essentially what Reeves did when he first started selling wallets. Another pro tip from Walter: Consider selling products that are durable — things that likely won't break in transit. Plus, you'll have an advantage if you're selling a product you understand well and use personally. "There are two big mistakes that new sellers make," Tyler Walter, co-founder of product sourcing company 330 Trading, told Insider. "The second big problem we see young e-commerce brands make is trying to expand product categories way too fast." He offered four product selection tips to help you avoid the two most common pitfalls when launching an e-commerce business. Then, "tweak it slightly, start selling it, and prove that it actually works before you go and customize something that's totally new and innovative." If you're looking to make extra money on the side, selling products on sites like Amazon is one way to go. "We are essentially the plumbing for e-commerce brands that help get their product manufactured in Asia and keep their businesses running," he told Insider. Insider spoke to Walter about what successful e-commerce companies are doing right — and how anyone can launch one and start making money selling online. Once you actually start profiting from your first product — in this example, the bluetooth headphones — then you can start getting more creative, he noted. "If you're thinking about starting a brand, don't even consider starting a brand that you're going to be fulfilling yourself.

The lending unit of crypto firm Genesis filed for bankruptcy in January after the collapse of key counterparties including FTX caused it to freeze customer redemptions in November. Its largest creditor is Gemini, founded by billionaire identical twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss who are also former U.S. Olympic rowers. A bankruptcy court appointed a mediator in April to help Genesis, DCG and its creditors agree on a restructuring plan, but the parties have yet to reach a deal despite several extensions. Under the offer, DCG would retain the proceeds from the sale of Genesis' lending unit. If Silbert and DCG do not agree, Gemini will sue Silbert and DCG, and file a motion to place DCG in default and demand immediate debt repayments, Winklevoss said.
