US stocks had one of their best days in years and hit new records after Trump's resounding win over Kamala Harris in Tuesday's election. Both of those moves make sense, said David Kelly, the global strategy chief at JPMorgan Asset Management, in an interview on Wednesday. AdvertisementThe strategy chief has been adamant that higher tariffs — one of Trump's key proposals — would cripple the US economy and endanger the global economic expansion. Related storiesMost economists condemn tariffs, which are taxes on imports, because they tend to lead to higher prices and lower economic growth. Sean Gallagher, the global head of Lazard's small-cap equity platform, made a similar point in a recent interview with Business Insider when asked about Trump's tariffs and Kelly's stance.

China expressed respect for the U.S. election result and congratulated Donald Trump on his victory, and an official newspaper called for a "pragmatic" approach to bilateral differences as U.S. tariff threats loomed. Trump, a Republican who has promised to implement stiff tariffs, recaptured the White House with a sweeping victory over Democrat Kamala Harris in Tuesday's election. "We respect the choice of the American people and congratulate Mr. Trump on his election as president," a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said in a statement late on Wednesday. Federal Reserve cuts interest rates by a quarter point

watch nowThe Federal Reserve approved its second consecutive interest rate cut Thursday, moving at a less aggressive pace than before but continuing its efforts to rightsize monetary policy. Among them was an altered view in how it assesses the effort to bring down inflation while supporting the labor market. The statement slightly downgraded the labor market, saying "conditions have generally eased, and the unemployment rate has moved up but remains low." Generally, the labor market has held up well. An acceleration in economic activity under Trump could persuade the Fed to cut rates less, depending on how inflation reacts.

Major stock indexes soared Wednesday morning in the wake of Donald Trump's decisive victory in Tuesday's presidential election. The last time the Dow, which represents larger, more established firms, saw a 1,000-point jump in a single day was November 2022. NBC News is projecting that Trump will finish with 276 Electoral College votes in his defeat of Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent. Trump has promised to extend or enact sweeping tax cuts and deregulatory policies that are widely supported across the business community. That represents market pushback on one of Trump's key policy planks: A weaker dollar that would support U.S. exports.

Gen Z voters who struggle with cursive could slow the vote count, Nevada's secretary of state said. He attributed higher numbers of problematic mail ballots to young voters without signatures. States in the US require a voter's signature on mail and absentee ballots, and several states require additional verifications, including comparing that signature to the voter's signature on file. As the state continues to process mail ballots this week, those figures — which are already higher than in 2020 and 2022 — are expected to increase. Hundreds of thousands of mail ballots, or about 1%, were rejected across the country during the 2022 midterm elections, NPR reported at the time.

Trump's plan would reduce average after-tax incomes by almost 3%, according to the tax think tank. "If we get tariffs, we will pass those tariff costs back to the consumer," Daniele said in September. A back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests a 10% across-the-board tariff would be roughly equivalent to a $320 billion tax on consumers, Cross said. "The administration could take tariff revenue and redistribute to households via tax cuts in some form or another," explained Pugliese of Wells Fargo. However, the typical U.S. household would still lose $2,600 a year from Trump's tariff plan, even after accounting for an extension of the 2017 tax cuts, according to an analysis by the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., attends a news conference after a lunch meeting with Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 1, 2022. Republicans are expected to regain majority control of the U.S. Senate in 2025, according to NBC News. Democrats entered Tuesday's elections with 47 seats out of 100 in the Senate. But the four independents in the chamber caucus with Democrats, giving the party a one-seat majority. Republicans arguably faced an easier path to regaining a Senate majority this election cycle, and are set to have at least 51 seats in the chamber in January, when members of Congress are sworn in.

Analysts expect Trump's economic policies to increase inflation, and push interest rates higher. AdvertisementDonald Trump's victory is set to herald a new era of higher inflation, tighter monetary policy, and surging cryptocurrencies, analysts said in initial reactions to the presidential election result. The economic impact of Trump's second term is likely to be volatile, said Lindsay James, investment strategist at UK-based Quilter Investments. However, such cuts could be shortlived if Trump's trade policies, which include proposed near-universal tariffs, prove to be inflationary as expected. Several stocks could rise if market volatility scales back after Tuesday's U.S. presidential election, according to a Bank of America analysis. Stock market volatility climbed ahead of the election, with the Cboe Volatility Index , known as Wall Street's "fear gauge," crossing 23 on Thursday. But with the winner of the election decided, the VIX has eased to around 16 on Wednesday. To react to this scenario, Bank of America screened for several lower-quality stocks inversely correlated to the VIX that could see a pop in their share prices. A possible Trump victory could spell massive gains for Tesla over the coming months, according to Wedbush Securities' Dan Ives. The analyst thinks the electric vehicle maker can pass the $1 trillion market cap threshold if the Republican nominee comes out on top in the U.S. presidential election. "This could ultimately add $40 to $50 per share to Tesla's stock right off the bat, and we could now be talking about a $1 trillion [or] $1.5 trillion market cap for Tesla." An engineering model of LignoSat, pictured at Kyoto University ahead of Tuesday's launch. “Early 1900s airplanes were made of wood,” said Kyoto University forest science professor Koji Murata. “A wooden satellite should be feasible, too.”Wood is more durable in space than on Earth because there’s no water or oxygen that would rot or inflame it, Murata added. A wooden satellite also minimizes the environmental impact at the end of its life, the researchers say.

Some on Wall Street view a Harris win as a potential obstacle for antitrust and megacap technology stocks. "Regulatory scrutiny will probably help a lot of M & A activity under Trump — Harris, it'll be a little more of the status quo," said Jay Woods, chief global strategist at Freedom Capital Markets. This could "slow the pace of the AI revolution," he said in a recent post to X that also called a Harris win "more bullish" for the industry.
