Several months before his guilty plea, Kelley posted on social media that the Capitol riot was an FBI “set up." Kelley spoke at a “Stop the Steal” rally at the state Capitol in Lansing in November 2020, shortly after the presidential election. Kelley remained on Capitol grounds for nearly two hours but isn't accused of entering the building that day. Also on Tuesday, a woman who smashed a window at the Capitol and used a bullhorn to direct other rioters on Jan. 6 was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison. A prosecutor has said Powell, 41, of Sandy Lake, Pennsylvania, played a “leading role” during the riot.

Rainmakers find political hedge in Chris Christie

[1/2] Republican presidential candidate and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie speaks at the New Hampshire Republican Party’s First in the Nation Leadership Summit in Nashua, New Hampshire, U.S., October 13, 2023. Several hedge fund rainmakers poured cash into Chris Christie’s campaign over the summer, according to filings released on Monday. But with legal woes hanging over Trump’s campaign, contributions to the most anti-Trump conservative could become a valuable call option for the group that knows something about hedging. It’s notable that Christie has been vocal about attacking Trump, whom he advised during the prior president’s first term. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie raised $3.8 million over the quarter, aided by donations from wealthy investors including Stanley Druckenmiller, David Tepper and Paul Tudor Jones.

The bitcoin safe haven trade is back on, says Bernstein

With recession fears swelling again, investors seeking a safe place to put their assets should be interested in bitcoin , says Bernstein. The cryptocurrency, which has grown in popularity among institutions for its "digital gold" qualities, has an "enviable return record" versus physical gold, Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani said in a note Monday. "Bitcoin's hard money properties makes it an attractive 'safe haven' asset. "The early stages of bitcoin adoption, naturally, makes it more attractive [than] gold, with bitcoin market cap at less than 5% of Gold's market value (of above ground reserves)." Jefferies also recently said bitcoin is a "critical hedge" against currency debasement and the return of inflation.

At one point Monday morning, bitcoin surged above $30,000 in a sudden spike on an unconfirmed report that the iShares spot bitcoin ETF had been formally approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Cryptocurrencies briefly soared to start the week as hopeful investors weighed the likelihood that the U.S. will finally see a bitcoin ETF in the coming months. Last week, bitcoin had jumped on Friday on news that the SEC would not appeal a ruling in Grayscale's lawsuit against regulators. In June of 2022, Grayscale sued the SEC over its denial of the company's application to convert the popular Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) to an ETF. To be sure, bitcoin is coming off its worst week since Aug. 18 and first negative week in six.

Paul Tudor Jones said Tuesday that aggressive rate hikes could tip the U.S. economy into a recession, and he expects stocks to suffer a double-digit loss before the downturn arrives. "So those rate hikes are probably going to tip us into recession." That's probably going to happen at some point from some level," Jones said. Jones said there are a few telltale signs in the market that show a looming recession, including gold prices and inverted Treasury yield curve. It has clearly been suppressed, and so you know that more likely than not we're going to go into recession," Jones said.

"You've got the geopolitical uncertainty... the United States is probably in its weakest fiscal position since certainly World War II with debt-to-GDP at 122%." The high-profile investor said the Israel-Hamas war brought on the most threatening and challenging geopolitical environment, which would create a significant risk-off market environment. Meanwhile, a surge in interest rates has deteriorated the fiscal health of the U.S. as the country continues to take on more debt. "As interest costs go up in the United States, you get in this vicious circle, where higher interest rates cause higher funding costs, cause higher debt issuance, which cause further bond liquidation, which cause higher rates, which put us in an untenable fiscal position," Jones said. Among the targets were the Ukrainian ports of Izmail and Reni, both of which lie across the Danube from Romanian soil. "They (Russian drones) fly at very low altitudes, sometimes less than 200 metres (above ground) ... they are built in such a way that least reflects radar waves," he said. Sept 1 (Reuters) - Pickering Energy Partners (PEP) is launching a financial advisory unit for oil and gas dealmaking, the investment firm said on Friday, doubling down on traditional fossil fuels as some banks are becoming wary about the industry and ramping up their bets on clean energy. The launch of the investment banking unit marks a return to oil and gas advisory services for Dan Pickering, the veteran energy financier who helped form Tudor, Pickering, Holt & Co, an energy boutique bank that was acquired by Perella Weinberg Partners (PWP.O) in 2016. Houston-based PEP has an existing investment banking unit that focuses solely on energy transition, while the firm's other offerings include equity research, investment funds, and consulting services. All non-compete agreements between the two firms have now expired, enabling Pickering to pursue oil and gas advisory work. Banks including BNP Paribas (BNPP.PA), Bank of Montreal (BMO.TO) and Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS.TO) have pulled back from oil and gas dealmaking over the past few years.

For years the Metropolitan Museum of Art housed its directors in a $5 million apartment on Fifth Avenue, where they lived for free and paid no taxes on that benefit. The American Museum of Natural History’s president also lived for decades in a rent-free, tax-free luxury East Side apartment owned by the museum that is just down the block from Central Park. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art long provided its director with a Tudor home valued at more than $6.5 million, and later a more modest mansion valued at $2.4 million. But in recent years, as art organizations contend with financial struggles at a time of heightened sensitivity around issues of income inequality, cultural institutions have begun to revisit — and in some cases roll back — the perks they give top executives.

North America revenue for the current quarter will be slightly down, Chief Executive Olivier Le Peuch said in a post-earnings conference call with analysts, saying activity in the region was moderating. However, the company expects third quarter revenue from international markets to grow by a mid-single digit percentage, citing a resurgence in offshore and Middle East drilling. In comparison, last quarter's international revenue rose 21% to $6.3 billion and North America's climbed 14% to $1.75 billion. Analysts at Tudor Pickering Holt noted that international revenue missed its estimate by $1 billion, while North America slightly topped its forecast.
