The comedian helmed the Comedy Central talk show between 1999 and 2015, before passing the torch to South African comedian Trevor Noah. Stewart will serve as "The Daily Show" host on Mondays starting Feb. 12, and appear at least through the 2024 election cycle. Since his 2015 exit from "The Daily Show," Stewart has kept busy as the executive producer of CBS' "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" and weekly spots on Apple's streaming service via his show "The Problem With Jon Stewart," which was recently canceled. Career changes can be hard, even for Bill Gates — who credits a simple, lifelong habit for his switch from a narrow-minded, decades-long focus on computers and software to international philanthropy. "I had a long period from about age 18 to 40 where I was very monomaniacal ... Microsoft was everything," Gates, 68, recently told comedian Trevor Noah on the "What Now? "I was lucky enough that as other people took over Microsoft, I got to go and read and learn about all the health challenges, why children die." With even more time to read, he researched ongoing global health crises and decided to make the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation his primary focus, he said. "Reading fuels a sense of curiosity about the world, which I think helped drive me forward in my career and in the work that I do now with my foundation," Gates told Time in 2017.

Gates says that a 3-day work week is "probably OK."The billionaire has previously acknowledged the risks of AI being misused. AdvertisementTechnology may not replace humans, but it could make a 3-day work week possible — at least, that's what Bill Gates thinks. "If you eventually get a society where you only have to work three days a week, that's probably OK," Gates said. There could exist a world where "machines can make all the food and the stuff," and people don't have to work a five day-plus work week to earn a living wage. Companies in the US and abroad have been testing the effectiveness of a four-day work week.

Trevor Milton's lawyers say he should avoid prison because his fraud conviction is not like that of Elizabeth Holmes. Holmes was convicted on charges that she defrauded investors in blood-testing company Theranos. Milton was convicted on charges that he duped investors with exaggerated claims about zero-emission Nikola trucks. Court officials have calculated federal sentencing guidelines to recommend between 17 1/2 years and 22 years in prison, although Milton's lawyers object to the calculations, saying they substantially overstate the seriousness of the crimes. "Unlike Holmes, Trevor never put Nikola's customers at risk, whereas Holmes touted and used blood-testing technology that she knew to be unreliable, thus putting human beings at medical risk," the lawyers said.

NEW YORK (AP) — Lawyers for the founder of truckmaker Nikola Corp. say he should not face incarceration because his fraud conviction is nothing like the fraud that landed Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in prison. Milton, 41, was convicted last year of fraud for duping investors with exaggerated claims about his company’s production of zero-emission trucks. Holmes, 39, is serving an 11-year sentence for defrauding investors in the blood-testing company Theranos. “Unlike Holmes, Trevor never put Nikola's customers at risk, whereas Holmes touted and used blood-testing technology that she knew to be unreliable, thus putting human beings at medical risk,” the lawyers said. Comedy has been the rare field where square jaws and chiseled features can count against you. Bob Odenkirk once said that it was impossible for men to be funny and sexy. Attractiveness has entered the maw of the culture war because the stigma against beautiful men has been fading. But you now see handsome men everywhere, even at small Brooklyn shows like the one where a comic introduced the endearingly cute Lucas O’Neil by citing not his credits but his cheekbones. Kumail Nanjiani most famously, but Chris Rock showing off his abs in The Hollywood Reporter took me more by surprise.

A former U.S. Marine who served in the Trump administration as a low-level State Department aide was sentenced on Friday to nearly six years in prison for his role in the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The former aide, Federico G. Klein, of Falls Church, Va., was a State Department employee when he used a stolen riot shield to repeatedly assault officers during several violent clashes in a tunnel below the Capitol, prosecutors said. He was arrested in March 2021 and indicted later that year. After a non-jury trial in July, Mr. Klein was convicted of eight felony charges, including six counts of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers; obstruction of an official proceeding; and civil disorder, as well as several misdemeanors, prosecutors said. He did not testify at his trial, and declined to address the court before Judge Trevor N. McFadden of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia sentenced him to 70 months in prison and 24 months of supervised release, The Associated Press reported.

In the end, Pollard proved the match winner again as he kicked over a 48 metre penalty to hand South Africa a place in the final. NEW YORK (AP) — Those miracles of modern science, the Rolling Stones, celebrated the release of their first album of original music in 18 years with a Manhattan club gig on Thursday. Mick Jagger alluded to past stunts the Stones had done in New York to tout new music over the years, including performing on a flatbed truck on Fifth Avenue. “Hackney Diamonds,” coming at a time many fans wondered if the Rolling Stones would ever bother again with new music, has been well received by critics, with many noting the crisp energy the band displayed. This time, the bar band was the Rolling Stones. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek joins author and comedian Trevor Noah to discuss the future of storytelling at Spotify Beach in Cannes, France, on June 20, 2023. Spotify on Monday announced a new artificial intelligence-powered feature that can translate podcasts into different languages using the host's own voice. The technology can create "realistic synthetic voices" from just a few seconds of speech, OpenAI said in a release. Spotify said it will help make the podcast listening experience more authentic and natural by maintaining podcasters' "distinctive speech characteristics." Spotify said it plans to make the feature accessible for more creators and languages in the future.

A BMW executive told Autocar magazine the company will be ending its $18-a-month heated seat subscription. That includes the roughly $18 monthly fee — or $180 annually — to activate heated seats, which come pre-installed in these cars. "We thought that we would provide an extra service to the customer by offering the chance to activate that later, but the user acceptance isn't that high," Nota told Autocar during the IAA Mobility conference in Munich. Despite scrapping the seat-warming charges, Nota told Autocar the company still plans to go ahead with charging for other features — like $20-a-month driving assistance software. Automakers Ford and General Motors set a target annual revenue of at least $20 billion from software services by 2030.

Some researchers, however, are now fighting back and developing new ways to protect people’s photos and images from AI’s grasp. The prototype, dubbed PhotoGuard, puts an invisible “immunization” over images that stops AI models from being able to manipulate the picture. The aim of PhotoGuard is to protect photos that people upload online from “malicious manipulation by AI models,” Salman said. But he said he hopes that with more engineering efforts, the prototype can be turned into a larger product that can be used to protect images. While generative AI tools “allow us to do amazing stuff, it comes with huge risks,” Salman said.
